A critical assessment of the pairing symmetry in NaxCoO2.yH2O
We examine each of the symmetry-allowed pairing states of NaxCoO2.yH2O and
compare their properties to what is experimentally and theoretically
established about the compound. In this way, we can eliminate the vast majority
of states that are technically allowed and narrow the field to two, both of
f-wave type states. We discuss the expected features of these states and
suggest experiments that can distinguish between them. We also discuss
odd-frequency gap pairing and how it relates to available experimental
evidence
Preparation, structural characterisation and antibacterial properties of Ga-doped sol-gel phosphate-based glass
A sol-gel preparation of Ga-doped phosphate-based glass with potential application in antimicrobial devices has been developed. Samples of composition (CaO)(0.30)(Na2O)(0.20-x) (Ga2O3) (x) (P2O5)(0.50) where x = 0 and 0.03 were prepared, and the structure and properties of the gallium-doped sample compared with those of the sample containing no gallium. Analysis of the P-31 MAS NMR data demonstrated that addition of gallium to the sol-gel reaction increases the connectivity of the phosphate network at the expense of hydroxyl groups. This premise is supported by the results of the elemental analysis, which showed that the gallium-free sample contains significantly more hydrogen and by FTIR spectroscopy, which revealed a higher concentration of -OH groups in that sample. Ga K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure and X-ray absorption near-edge structure data revealed that the gallium ions are coordinated by six oxygen atoms. In agreement with the X-ray absorption data, the high-energy XRD results also suggest that the Ga3+ ions are octahedrally coordinated with respect to oxygen. Antimicrobial studies demonstrated that the sample containing Ga3+ ions had significant activity against Staphylococcus aureus compared to the control
O pagamento da remuneração das férias em dobro e a interpretação jurisprudencial
O instituto das férias, com previsão constitucional e legal, encontra-se sujeito a abordagem valorativa da Justiça do Trabalho, o que redundou na súmula 450 do Tribunal Superior do Trabalho. O Supremo Tribunal Federal avalia a constitucionalidade deste específico procedimento, sendo que no presente trabalho o instituto legal é estudado em suas características básicas, antes de se adentrar à interpretação jurisprudencial específica destinada à mencionada súmula. Não se limita o trabalho em questão a avaliar a interpretação jurisprudencial que preenche o bojo da arguição de descumprimento de preceito fundamental de número 501, como também se preocupa com outros entendimentos previstos dentro do próprio Supremo Tribunal Federal, e do Tribunal Superior do Trabalho no que tange à matéria. Deve-se enfocar que o método hipotético-dedutivo é utilizado na pesquisa.
A iniciativa "Education for Justice" do UNODC e o direito à educação como requisito para o exercício da cidadania
A educação é fundamental para a inserção da criança e do adolescente na sociedade, ainda mais com o incremento tecnológico. A iniciativa “Education for Justice” do UNODC se pretende em um estágio superior àquela tenção. O objetivo do presente artigo é entender como essa específica política é formulada, e, com esse fito, inicia-se a abordagem científica com um estudo sumário que busca averiguar a fundamentação legal e constitucional brasileira no que concerne à educação, passando-se, em um segundo momento, para a compreensão hodierna do conceito de cidadania. Por último, antes de se adentrar à conclusão, analisa-se a iniciativa entabulada no bojo do UNODC, aferindo-se sua relação com a realidade brasileira. É possível o estabelecimento de um entendimento que compreende a necessidade e adequação de políticas públicas em similitude à “Education for justice”, mormente quando a cidadania atual requer a concretização do indivíduo e da sociedade como um todo, ou seja, a justiça individual e a justiça social. Tendo-se o caso brasileiro em pauta, notória a exclusão social e a exposição dos jovens a ambientes e práticas nocivas à seu desenvolvimento saudável, sendo o intuito de políticas públicas similares à retratada a possibilidade de se oferecer um aprendizado que proporcione o desenvolvimento das melhores características de cada indivíduo, e, ao mesmo tempo, a possibilidade de emprego de capacidades a serviço de atividades benéficas ao convívio social. Como metodologia, tem-se o método de abordagem, sendo adotado o método hipotético-dedutivo. De outro lado, o método de procedimento baseia-se pelo levantamento bibliográfico, expresso pelo método dissertativo-argumentativo
Anthropogenic perturbation of the carbon fluxes from land to ocean
A substantial amount of the atmospheric carbon taken up on land through photosynthesis and chemical weathering is transported laterally along the aquatic continuum from upland terrestrial ecosystems to the ocean. So far, global carbon budget estimates have implicitly assumed that the transformation and lateral transport of carbon along this aquatic continuum has remained unchanged since pre-industrial times. A synthesis of published work reveals the magnitude of present-day lateral carbon fluxes from land to ocean, and the extent to which human activities have altered these fluxes. We show that anthropogenic perturbation may have increased the flux of carbon to inland waters by as much as 1.0 Pg C yr-1 since pre-industrial times, mainly owing to enhanced carbon export from soils. Most of this additional carbon input to upstream rivers is either emitted back to the atmosphere as carbon dioxide (~0.4 Pg C yr-1) or sequestered in sediments (~0.5 Pg C yr-1) along the continuum of freshwater bodies, estuaries and coastal waters, leaving only a perturbation carbon input of ~0.1 Pg C yr-1 to the open ocean. According to our analysis, terrestrial ecosystems store ~0.9 Pg C yr-1 at present, which is in agreement with results from forest inventories but significantly differs from the figure of 1.5 Pg C yr-1 previously estimated when ignoring changes in lateral carbon fluxes. We suggest that carbon fluxes along the land–ocean aquatic continuum need to be included in global carbon dioxide budgets.Peer reviewe
Immediate thoracotomy for penetrating injuries: Ten years' experience at a Dutch level I trauma center
Background: An emergency department thoracotomy (EDT) or an emergency thoracotomy (ET) in the operating theater are both beneficial in selected patients following thoracic penetrating injuries. Since outcome-descriptive European studies are lacking, the aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate ten years of experience at a Dutch level I trauma center. Method: Data on patients who underwent an immediate thoracotomy after sustaining a penetrating thoracic injury between October 2000 and January 2011 were collected from the trauma registry and hospital files. Descriptive and univariate analyses were performed. Results: Among 56 patients, 12 underwent an EDT and 44 an ET. Forty-six patients sustained one or multiple stab wounds, versus ten with one or multiple gunshot wounds. Patients who had undergone an EDT had a lower GCS (p < 0. 001), lower pre-hospital RTS and hospital triage RTS (p < 0. 001 and p = 0. 009, respectively), and a lower SBP (p = 0. 038). A witnessed loss of signs of life generally occurred in EDT patients and was accompanied by 100 % mortality. Survival following EDT was 25 %, which was significantly lower than in the ET group (75 %; p = 0. 002). Survivors had lower ISS (p = 0. 011), lower rates of pre-hospital (p = 0. 031) and hospital (p = 0. 003) hemodynamic instability, and a lower prevalence of concomitant abdominal injury (p = 0. 002). Conclusion: The overall survival rate in our study was 64 %. The outcome of immediate thoracotomy performed in this level I trauma center was similar to those obtained in high-incidence regions like the US and South Africa. This suggests that trauma units where immediate thoracotomies are not part of the daily routine can achieve similar results, if properly trained
TRAIP promotes DNA damage response during genome replication and is mutated in primordial dwarfism.
DNA lesions encountered by replicative polymerases threaten genome stability and cell cycle progression. Here we report the identification of mutations in TRAIP, encoding an E3 RING ubiquitin ligase, in patients with microcephalic primordial dwarfism. We establish that TRAIP relocalizes to sites of DNA damage, where it is required for optimal phosphorylation of H2AX and RPA2 during S-phase in response to ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, as well as fork progression through UV-induced DNA lesions. TRAIP is necessary for efficient cell cycle progression and mutations in TRAIP therefore limit cellular proliferation, providing a potential mechanism for microcephaly and dwarfism phenotypes. Probing the structures of gas-phase rhodium cluster cations by far-infrared spectroscopy.
The geometric structures of small cationic rhodium clusters Rh(n)(+) (n = 6-12) are investigated by comparison of experimental far-infrared multiple photon dissociation spectra with spectra calculated using density functional theory. The clusters are found to favor structures based on octahedral and tetrahedral motifs for most of the sizes considered, in contrast to previous theoretical predictions that rhodium clusters should favor cubic motifs. Our findings highlight the need for further development of theoretical and computational methods to treat these high-spin transition metal clusters
Pathogenic marine microbes influence the effects of climate change on a commercially important tropical bivalve
There is growing evidence that climate change will increase the prevalence of toxic algae and harmful bacteria, which can accumulate in marine bivalves. However, we know little about any possible interactions between exposure to these microorganisms and the effects of climate change on bivalve health, or about how this may affect the bivalve toxin-pathogen load. In mesocosm experiments, mussels, Perna viridis, were subjected to simulated climate change (warming and/or hyposalinity) and exposed to harmful bacteria and/or toxin-producing dinoflagellates. We found significant interactions between climate change and these microbes on metabolic and/or immunobiological function and toxin-pathogen load in mussels. Surprisingly, however, these effects were virtually eliminated when mussels were exposed to both harmful microorganisms simultaneously. This study is the first to examine the effects of climate change on determining mussel toxin-pathogen load in an ecologically relevant, multi-trophic context. The results may have considerable implications for seafood safety
