Double-pass configured fibre Mach-Zehnder interferometric optical filter for distributed fibre sensing

    No full text
A double-pass configured all-fibre Mach-Zehnder interferometric optical filter has been developed and used in a distributed fibre-optic sensor for separation of Rayleigh and Brillouin signals. Its superior performance over a single-pass all-fibre Mach-Zehnder interferometer is highlighted by its 15dB improved rejection of the Rayleigh signal and comparable throughput

Characterisation of strain dependence of the Landau-Placzek ratio for distributed sensing

    No full text
The authors report on the strain dependence of the Landau-Placzek ratio (LPR). This, together with the known temperature dependence of the LPR and the Brillouin frequency dependence on strain and temperature, may be used to form the basis of a combined distributed strain and temperature sensor

Avaliação da depleção linfóide folicular da Bursa de Fabricius: uma metodologia alternativa utilizando análise digital de imagem e redes neurais artificiais

    Get PDF
Fifty Bursa of Fabricius (BF) were examined by conventional optical microscopy and digital images were acquired and processed using Matlab® 6.5 software. The Artificial Neuronal Network (ANN) was generated using Neuroshell® Classifier software and the optical and digital data were compared. The ANN was able to make a comparable classification of digital and optical scores. The use of ANN was able to classify correctly the majority of the follicles, reaching sensibility and specificity of 89% and 96%, respectively. When the follicles were scored and grouped in a binary fashion the sensibility increased to 90% and obtained the maximum value for the specificity of 92%. These results demonstrate that the use of digital image analysis and ANN is a useful tool for the pathological classification of the BF lymphoid depletion. In addition it provides objective results that allow measuring the dimension of the error in the diagnosis and classification therefore making comparison between databases feasible.Cinquenta Bursa de Fabrícius (BF) foram examinadas através de microscopia óptica convencional e imagens digitais foram obtidas e processadas através do software Matlab® 6.5. Viability of Noether symmetry of F(R) theory of gravity

Canonization of F(R) theory of gravity to explore Noether symmetry is performed treating R - 6(\frac{\ddot a}{a} + \frac{\dot a^2}{a^2} + \frac{k}{a^2}) = 0 as a constraint of the theory in Robertson-Walker space-time, which implies that R is taken as an auxiliary variable. Although it yields correct field equations, Noether symmetry does not allow linear term in the action, and as such does not produce a viable cosmological model. Here, we show that this technique of exploring Noether symmetry does not allow even a non-linear form of F(R), if the configuration space is enlarged by including a scalar field in addition, or taking anisotropic models into account. Surprisingly enough, it does not reproduce the symmetry that already exists in the literature (A. K. Sanyal, B. Modak, C. Rubano and E. Piedipalumbo, Gen.Relativ.Grav.37, 407 (2005), arXiv:astro-ph/0310610) for scalar tensor theory of gravity in the presence of R^2 term. Thus, R can not be treated as an auxiliary variable and hence Noether symmetry of arbitrary form of F(R) theory of gravity remains obscure. However, there exists in general, a conserved current for F(R) theory of gravity in the presence of a non-minimally coupled scalar-tensor theory (A. K. Sanyal, Phys.Lett.B624, 81 (2005), arXiv:hep-th/0504021 and Mod.Phys.Lett.A25, 2667 (2010), arXiv:0910.2385 [astro-ph.CO]). Here, we briefly expatiate the non-Noether conserved current and cite an example to reveal its importance in finding cosmological solution for such an action, taking F(R) \propto R^{3/2}.Comment: 16 pages, 1 figure. appears in Int J Theoretical Phys (2012

Some exact solutions of F(R) gravity with charged (a)dS black hole interpretation

In this paper we obtain topological static solutions of some kind of pure F(R)F(R) gravity. The present solutions are two kind: first type is uncharged solution which corresponds with the topological (a)dS Schwarzschild solution and second type has electric charge and is equivalent to the Einstein-Λ\Lambda-conformally invariant Maxwell solution. In other word, starting from pure gravity leads to (charged) Einstein-Λ\Lambda solutions which we interpreted them as (charged) (a)dS black hole solutions of pure F(R)F(R) gravity. Calculating the Ricci and Kreschmann scalars show that there is a curvature singularity at r=0r=0. We should note that the Kreschmann scalar of charged solutions goes to infinity as r0r \rightarrow 0, but with a rate slower than that of uncharged solutions.Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures, generalization to higher dimensions, references adde

Measurement of the Bottom contribution to non-photonic electron production in p+pp+p collisions at s\sqrt{s} =200 GeV

The contribution of BB meson decays to non-photonic electrons, which are mainly produced by the semi-leptonic decays of heavy flavor mesons, in p+pp+p collisions at s=\sqrt{s} = 200 GeV has been measured using azimuthal correlations between non-photonic electrons and hadrons. The extracted BB decay contribution is approximately 50% at a transverse momentum of pT5p_{T} \geq 5 GeV/cc. These measurements constrain the nuclear modification factor for electrons from BB and DD meson decays. The result indicates that BB meson production in heavy ion collisions is also suppressed at high pTp_{T}.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted by PR

Longitudinal double-spin asymmetry and cross section for inclusive neutral pion production at midrapidity in polarized proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV

We report a measurement of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry A_LL and the differential cross section for inclusive Pi0 production at midrapidity in polarized proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV. The cross section was measured over a transverse momentum range of 1 < p_T < 17 GeV/c and found to be in good agreement with a next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculation. The longitudinal double-spin asymmetry was measured in the range of 3.7 < p_T < 11 GeV/c and excludes a maximal positive gluon polarization in the proton. The mean transverse momentum fraction of Pi0's in their parent jets was found to be around 0.7 for electromagnetically triggered events.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. D (RC

Microencapsulation of fish oil by spray-drying using two different wall materials: a comparison

Oils and fats have a wide range of health benefits, especially those that have a high concentration of polyunsaturated fatty acids, like fish oils. Unfortunately, oils are highly susceptible to heat, light, and oxygen degradation, causing them to lose the qualities that would make them interesting for the public. With this in mind, this study compared two methods of spray-drying, a technique that helps preserve the stability of oils in storage for longer periods of time. Emulsions made with skimmed milk powder and with maltodextrin and whey protein hydrolysate were spray-dried, resulting in 2 different microencapsulated fish oils. They were compared regarding encapsulation efficiency, water activity, moisture content, and peroxide index. The skimmed milk showed better results, with a 28.17% lower peroxide index than the non-encapsulated oil and lower water activity and moisture content compared to the emulsion using maltodextrin (2.690±0.19% vs 6.747±0.29% moisture content and 0.376±0.013 vs 0.554±0.006 water activity). Since skimmed milk powder is rather cheap, it is ideal for spray-drying, a simple and fast technique. In this way, fish oil can be safely microencapsulated in powder form, lasting longer than the oil capsules currently available, since the oil is protected from light, temperature, moisture, and oxidation. In addition, the oily odor is masked, making it more appealing to the consumer, and it may be combined with other powders, like vitamins and minerals, which opens up new possibilities for the production of supplements
