    Reduction Mandibuloplasty For Facial Aesthetic Enhancement In Western Women - A Case Report

    This paper reports on the case of a Western female patient with square jaw and low mandibular angle deformity who sought treatment for aesthetic facial enhancement. While face-narrowing surgical procedures are especially popular among Asian women, there seems to be a general, cross-cultural agreement that a beautiful female face should be oval and slender. Under general anesthesia, intra-oral incisions were performed bilaterally to approach the mandibular angles. After periosteal elevation, bilateral corticectomies of the mandibular rami and "V" ostectomies of the mandibular base were executed. Postoperative recovery was uneventful. Six months after surgery, the patient's face was not only rounder and gentler in the frontal view, but also showed an evident increase of the gonial angles in the profile and three-quarter views.3278178

    Energy Efficiency-Spectral Efficiency Trade-Off of Transmit Antenna Selection

    We investigate the energy efficiency-spectral efficiency (EE-SE) trade-off of transmit antenna selection/maximum ratio combining (TAS) scheme. A realistic power consumption model (PCM) is considered, and it is shown that using TAS can provide significant energy savings when compared to multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) in the low to medium SE region, regardless the number of antennas, as well as outperform transmit beamforming scheme (MRT) for the entire SE range. For a fixed number of receive antennas, our results also show that the EE gain of TAS over MIMO becomes even greater as the number of transmit antennas increases. The optimal value of SE that maximizes the EE is obtained analytically, and confirmed by numerical results. Moreover, the influence of receiver correlation is also evaluated and it is shown that considering a non-realistic PCM can lead to mistakes when comparing TAS and MIMO

    Galectin-3-null mice display defective neutrophil clearance during acute inflammation

    Galectin-3 has been associated with a plethora of proinflammatory functions because of its ability, among others, to promote neutrophil activation and because of the reduction in neutrophil recruitment in models of infection in Gal-3-null mice. Conversely, it has also been linked to resolution of inflammation through its actions as an opsonin and its ability to promote efferocytosis of apoptotic neutrophils. Using a self-resolving model of peritonitis, we have addressed the modulation and role of Gal-3 in acute inflammation. We have shown that Gal-3 expression is increased in neutrophils that travel to the inflamed peritoneum and that cellular localization of this lectin is modulated during the course of the inflammatory response. Furthermore, neutrophil recruitment to the inflamed peritoneum is increased in Gal-3–null mice during the course of the response, and that correlates with reduced numbers of monocytes/macrophages in the cavities of those mice, as well as reduced apoptosis and efferocytosis of Gal-3–null neutrophils. These data indicate a role for endogenous Gal-3 in neutrophil clearance during acute inflammation

    ALIGNED: A framework for the LCA of bio-based products

    The assessment of bio based products presents several challenges: from the definition of system boundaries and choice of system models, modeling competition for biomass and for land, to performing dynamic and time specific accounting, making scenarios and considering uncertainty. We present the background, methodology, and expected results of the Horizon-Europe-funded project “Aligning Life Cycle Assessment methods and bio-based sectors for improved environmental performance” (ALIGNED, grant number 101059430). Targeting five sectors namely woodworking, pulp and paper, biochemicals, construction and textiles, ALIGNED fulfils three research needs: 1) to improve, harmonize, and align LCA methodology for the assessment of bio-based products covering environmental and socio-economic aspects, 2) to demonstrate the harmonized methodology to improve the environmental performance of specific technology development cases in industries within the bio-based sectors 3) to inform and involve stakeholders, enabling an efficient methodological uptake.ALIGNED modelling framework does not intend to provide a new standard or guideline but instead to make available an ecosystem of science-based and open approaches and tools to ease the assessment of bio-based products. Key elements in such framework include: 1) A science and evidence-based approach: scientifically sound modelling as close as possible to reality, avoiding normative rules, and favoring models that can be validated and revised when new data become available as well as an ecosystem of interacting models and tools. 2) A lifecycle perspective: the assessment takes the full life cycle of bio-based products into account. 3) Relevance for decision-makers and usefulness for decision support: we focus on modelling what are the consequences of specific decisions. We explicitly consider uncertainty in the decision support. 4) Balancing model complexity and model applicability: we select and use in this framework models that are scientifically robust but also usable by practitioners to the largest extent, keeping in mind the trade-off between model complexity and applicability. 5) Adherence to open-science practices: models, tools, and their documentation are open, while data should be as open as possible. 6) Ensuring relevance for bio-based products: the modelling framework considers the specific challenges and issues that exist in the assessment of bio-based products

Concomitant Eu and Yb valence transitions towards a 3+ state, together with an antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic transition, are observed with applied pressures up to 30 GPa.     Molecular and Behavioral Differentiation among Brazilian Populations of Lutzomyia longipalpis (Diptera: Psychodidae: Phlebotominae)

    Lutzomyia longipalpis is the main vector of visceral leishmaniasis in the Americas. There is strong evidence that L. longipalpis is a species complex, but there is still no consensus regarding the number of species occurring in Brazil. We combined molecular and behavioral analyses of a number of L. longipalpis populations in order to help clarify this question. This approach has allowed us to identify two main groups of populations in Brazil. One group probably represents a single species distributed mainly throughout the coastal regions of North and Northeast Brazil and whose males produce the same type of copulation song and pheromone. The second group is more heterogeneous, probably represented by a number of incipient species with different levels of genetic divergence among the siblings that produce different combinations of copulation songs and pheromones. The high level of complexity observed raises important questions concerning the epidemiological consequences of this incipient speciation process

    Gauge symmetry and W-algebra in higher derivative systems

    The problem of gauge symmetry in higher derivative Lagrangian systems is discussed from a Hamiltonian point of view. The number of independent gauge parameters is shown to be in general {\it{less}} than the number of independent primary first class constraints, thereby distinguishing it from conventional first order systems. Different models have been considered as illustrative examples.
