Universal thermal and electrical conductivity from holography
It is known from earlier work of Iqbal, Liu (arXiv:0809.3808) that the
boundary transport coefficients such as electrical conductivity (at vanishing
chemical potential), shear viscosity etc. at low frequency and finite
temperature can be expressed in terms of geometrical quantities evaluated at
the horizon. In the case of electrical conductivity, at zero chemical potential
gauge field fluctuation and metric fluctuation decouples, resulting in a
trivial flow from horizon to boundary. In the presence of chemical potential,
the story becomes complicated due to the fact that gauge field and metric
fluctuation can no longer be decoupled. This results in a nontrivial flow from
horizon to boundary. Though horizon conductivity can be expressed in terms of
geometrical quantities evaluated at the horizon, there exist no such neat
result for electrical conductivity at the boundary. In this paper we propose an
expression for boundary conductivity expressed in terms of geometrical
quantities evaluated at the horizon and thermodynamical quantities. We also
consider the theory at finite cutoff outside the horizon (arXiv:1006.1902) and
give an expression for cutoff dependent electrical conductivity, which
interpolates smoothly between horizon conductivity and boundary conductivity .
Using the results about the electrical conductivity we gain much insight into
the universality of thermal conductivity to viscosity ratio proposed in
arXiv:0912.2719.Comment: An appendix added discussing relation between boundary conductivity
and universal conductivity of stretched horizon, version to be published in

Analytic Lifshitz black holes in higher dimensions
We generalize the four-dimensional R^2-corrected z=3/2 Lifshitz black hole to
a two-parameter family of black hole solutions for any dynamical exponent z and
for any dimension D. For a particular relation between the parameters, we find
the first example of an extremal Lifshitz black hole. An asymptotically
Lifshitz black hole with a logarithmic decay is also exhibited for a specific
critical exponent depending on the dimension. We extend this analysis to the
more general quadratic curvature corrections for which we present three new
families of higher-dimensional D>=5 analytic Lifshitz black holes for generic
z. One of these higher-dimensional families contains as critical limits the z=3
three-dimensional Lifshitz black hole and a new z=6 four-dimensional black
hole. The variety of analytic solutions presented here encourages to explore
these gravity models within the context of non-relativistic holographic
correspondence.Comment: 14 page
Cyclosporine-A therapy-induced multiple bilateral breast and accessory axillary breast fibroadenomas: a case report
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Breast adenoma is common. However, in the setting of post-transplantation immune suppression it may be expressed differently.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A 35-year-old Sudanese woman, with a history of renal transplantation two and half years prior to presentation, was on a single immune suppression therapy in the form of cyclosporine-A since the transplantation. During a regular follow-up visit, she was noticed to have gingival hypertrophy and bilateral breast and axillary swellings. She underwent successful surgical resection of the bilateral fibroadenomas.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Cyclosporine-A therapy post renal transplantation is associated with an increased incidence of benign breast changes as fibroadenoma. Regular follow-up and appropriate selection of immunosuppressant therapy are essential in the post transplantation management of these patients.</p
Black holes and black branes in Lifshitz spacetimes
We construct analytic solutions describing black holes and black branes in
asymptotically Lifshitz spacetimes with arbitrary dynamical exponent z and for
arbitrary number of dimensions. The model considered consists of Einstein
gravity with negative cosmological constant, a scalar, and N U(1) gauge fields
with dilatonic-like couplings. We study the phase diagrams and thermodynamic
instabilities of the solution, and find qualitative differences between the
cases with 12.Comment: 27 pages, 10 figures; v2 references added, minor comments adde
Benefits and risks of the hormetic effects of dietary isothiocyanates on cancer prevention
The isothiocyanate (ITC) sulforaphane (SFN) was shown at low levels (1-5 µM) to promote cell proliferation to 120-143% of the controls in a number of human cell lines, whilst at high levels (10-40 µM) it inhibited such cell proliferation. Similar dose responses were observed for cell migration, i.e. SFN at 2.5 µM increased cell migration in bladder cancer T24 cells to 128% whilst high levels inhibited cell migration. This hormetic action was also found in an angiogenesis assay where SFN at 2.5 µM promoted endothelial tube formation (118% of the control), whereas at 10-20 µM it caused significant inhibition. The precise mechanism by which SFN influences promotion of cell growth and migration is not known, but probably involves activation of autophagy since an autophagy inhibitor, 3-methyladenine, abolished the effect of SFN on cell migration. Moreover, low doses of SFN offered a protective effect against free-radical mediated cell death, an effect that was enhanced by co-treatment with selenium. These results suggest that SFN may either prevent or promote tumour cell growth depending on the dose and the nature of the target cells. In normal cells, the promotion of cell growth may be of benefit, but in transformed or cancer cells it may be an undesirable risk factor. In summary, ITCs have a biphasic effect on cell growth and migration. The benefits and risks of ITCs are not only determined by the doses, but are affected by interactions with Se and the measured endpoint
Pioglitazone Prevents Capillary Rarefaction in Streptozotocin-Diabetic Rats Independently of Glucose Control and Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Expression
Background/Aims: Reduction of capillary network density occurs early in the development of metabolic syndrome and may be relevant for the precipitation of diabetes. Agonists of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)-gamma transcription factor are vasculoprotective, but their capacity for structural preservation of the microcirculation is unclear. Methods: Male Wistar rats were rendered diabetic by streptozotocin and treated with pioglitazone in chow for up to 12 weeks. Capillary density was determined in heart and skeletal muscle after platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1 (PECAM-1) immunostaining. Hallmarks of apoptosis and angiogenesis were determined. Results: Capillary density deteriorated progressively in the presence of hyperglycemia (from 971/mm(2) to 475/mm(2) in quadriceps muscle during 13 weeks). Pioglitazone did not influence plasma glucose, left ventricular weight, or body weight but nearly doubled absolute and relative capillary densities compared to untreated controls (1.2 vs. 0.6 capillaries/myocyte in heart and 1.5 vs. 0.9 capillaries/myocyte in quadriceps muscle) after 13 weeks of diabetes. No antiapoptotic or angiogenic influence of pioglitazone was detected while a reduced expression of hypoxia-inducible factor-3 alpha and PPAR coactivator-1 alpha (PGC-1 alpha) mRNA as well as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) protein possibly occurred as a consequence of improved vascularization. Conclusion: Pioglitazone preserves microvascular structure in diabetes independently of improvements in glycemic control and by a mechanism unrelated to VEGF-mediated angiogenesis. Lifshitz black holes in string theory
We provide the first black hole solutions with Lifshitz asymptotics found in
string theory. These are expected to be dual to models enjoying anisotropic
scale invariance with dynamical exponent z=2 at finite temperature. We employ a
consistent truncation of type IIB supergravity to four dimensions with an
arbitrary 5-dimensional Einstein manifold times a circle as internal geometry.
New interesting features are found that significantly differ from previous
results in phenomenological models. In particular, small black holes are shown
to be thermodynamically unstable, analogously to the usual AdS-Schwarzschild
black holes, and extremality is never reached. This signals a possible
Hawking-Page like phase transition at low temperatures.Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures. v2 references adde
Singular values of the Dirac operator in dense QCD-like theories
We study the singular values of the Dirac operator in dense QCD-like theories
at zero temperature. The Dirac singular values are real and nonnegative at any
nonzero quark density. The scale of their spectrum is set by the diquark
condensate, in contrast to the complex Dirac eigenvalues whose scale is set by
the chiral condensate at low density and by the BCS gap at high density. We
identify three different low-energy effective theories with diquark sources
applicable at low, intermediate, and high density, together with their
overlapping domains of validity. We derive a number of exact formulas for the
Dirac singular values, including Banks-Casher-type relations for the diquark
condensate, Smilga-Stern-type relations for the slope of the singular value
density, and Leutwyler-Smilga-type sum rules for the inverse singular values.
We construct random matrix theories and determine the form of the microscopic
spectral correlation functions of the singular values for all nonzero quark
densities. We also derive a rigorous index theorem for non-Hermitian Dirac
operators. Our results can in principle be tested in lattice simulations.Comment: 3 references added, version published in JHE
String Theory on Warped AdS_3 and Virasoro Resonances
We investigate aspects of holographic duals to time-like warped AdS_3
space-times--which include G\"odel's universe--in string theory. Using
worldsheet techniques similar to those that have been applied to AdS_3
backgrounds, we are able to identify space-time symmetry algebras that act on
the dual boundary theory. In particular, we always find at least one Virasoro
algebra with computable central charge. Interestingly, there exists a dense set
of points in the moduli space of these models in which there is actually a
second commuting Virasoro algebra, typically with different central charge than
the first. We analyze the supersymmetry of the backgrounds, finding related
enhancements, and comment on possible interpretations of these results. We also
perform an asymptotic symmetry analysis at the level of supergravity, providing
additional support for the worldsheet analysis.Comment: 24 pages + appendice
