Influence of the external pressure on the quantum correlations of molecular magnets
The study of quantum correlations in solid state systems is a large avenue
for research and their detection and manipulation are an actual challenge to
overcome. In this context, we show by using first-principles calculations on
the prototype material KNaCuSiO that the degree of quantum
correlations in this spin cluster system can be managed by external hydrostatic
pressure. Our results open the doors for research in detection and manipulation
of quantum correlations in magnetic systems with promising applications in
quantum information science
Pearling: stroke segmentation with crusted pearl strings
We introduce a novel segmentation technique, called Pearling, for the semi-automatic extraction of idealized models of networks of strokes (variable width curves) in images. These networks may for example represent roads in an aerial photograph, vessels in a medical scan, or strokes in a drawing. The operator seeds the process by selecting representative areas of good (stroke interior) and bad colors. Then, the operator may either provide a rough trace through a particular path in the stroke graph or simply pick a starting point (seed) on a stroke and a direction of growth. Pearling computes in realtime the centerlines of the strokes, the bifurcations, and the thickness function along each stroke, hence producing a purified medial axis transform of a desired portion of the stroke graph. No prior segmentation or thresholding is required. Simple gestures may be used to trim or extend the selection or to add branches. The realtime performance and reliability of Pearling results from a novel disk-sampling approach, which traces the strokes by optimizing the positions and radii of a discrete series of disks (pearls) along the stroke. A continuous model is defined through subdivision. By design, the idealized pearl string model is slightly wider than necessary to ensure that it contains the stroke boundary. A narrower core model that fits inside the stroke is computed simultaneously. The difference between the pearl string and its core contains the boundary of the stroke and may be used to capture, compress, visualize, or analyze the raw image data along the stroke boundary
Contextual determinants of Intimate Partner Violence: a multi-level analysis in six European cities
Objectives: To assess whether city-level characteristics influence the risk of intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization across six European cities. Methods: The DOVE Study included 3496 participants from Athens-Greece, Budapest-Hungary, London-UK, Östersund-Sweden, Porto-Portugal and Stuttgart-Germany. IPV victimization was assessed using the Revised Conflict Tactics Scales and several contextual variables were included: GINI coefficient, gender equality index, an index of social support, unemployment rate and proportion of residents with tertiary education. Multilevel models were fitted to estimate the associations (Odds ratio, 95% Confidence Intervals) between each type of victimization and contextual and individual-level variables. Results: 62.3% of the participants reported being a victim of IPV during the previous year, with large between-city differences (53.9%-72.4%). Contextual variables accounted for a substantial amount of this heterogeneity. Unemployment rates were associated with psychological (1.05, 1.01-1.08) and physical IPV (1.07, 1.01-1.13). GINI coefficient showed a positive association with any form of IPV (1.06, 1.01-1.11) and sexual coercion (1.13, 1.01-1.25). Conclusions: We found significant associations between contextual determinants and IPV, which emphasizes the importance of considering contextual socioeconomic conditions when policy measures are designed to address IPV

On exact time-averages of a massive Poisson particle
In this work we study, under the Stratonovich definition, the problem of the
damped oscillatory massive particle subject to a heterogeneous Poisson noise
characterised by a rate of events, \lambda (t), and a magnitude, \Phi,
following an exponential distribution. We tackle the problem by performing
exact time-averages over the noise in a similar way to previous works analysing
the problem of the Brownian particle. From this procedure we obtain the
long-term equilibrium distributions of position and velocity as well as
analytical asymptotic expressions for the injection and dissipation of energy
terms. Considerations on the emergence of stochastic resonance in this type of
system are also set forth.Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures. To be published in Journal of Statistical
