Cytotoxic activity of Guettarda pohliana Mull. Arg. (Rubiaceae)

    No full text
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)The cytotoxic activity of crude extracts and their fractions from leaves and roots of G. pohliana was assessed against nine human cancer cell lines: melanoma (UACC-62), breast (MCF-7), breast expressing the multidrug resistance phenotype (NCI-ADR), lung (NCI-460), prostate (PCO-3), kidney (786-0), ovarian (OVCAR), colon (HT-29) and leukaemia (K-562). The hexane fraction from leaves (HL) and ethyl acetate (EAR), chloroform (CR) and hydromethanolic (HMR) fractions from roots were the most active fractions against K-562 with GI(50) values being lower than 1gmL(-1). Also, CR and HMR fractions were active against UACC-62 cell line in the same order of magnitude. The phytochemical study of the CR fraction allowed identifying the known iridoids secoxyloganin, sweroside and loganin.271816771681Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES

Antiproliferative Activity and Constituents of Aspidosperma macrocarpon (Apocynaceae) Leaves

    No full text
Aspidosperma macrocarpon belongs to the family Apocynaceae and is endemic to Americas and mainly found from Mexico to Argentina. It is known in Brazil as 'guatambu'or 'peroba'. Crude extracts and their fractions from leaves were assayed against human cancer cells lines: glioma (U251), melanoma (UACC-62), mammary (MCF-7), ovarian expressing the multidrug resistance phenotype (NCI-ADR/RES), lung (NCI-H460), prostate (PC-3), kidney (786-0), ovarian (OVCAR-3), colon (HT-29) and leukemia (K-562). The crude extract (EAM), hexane (HA) and chloroform (CA) fractions were the most active fractions against K-562 with GI50 values low than 1 mu g/mL. Also, CA was moderate active against OVCAR-3 and NCI-ADR/RES cells lines. This phytochemical study allowed to identify the known kopsanone, kopsinine, ursolic acid, rutin, 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid, and 3,5-O-dicaffeoylquinic acid. The kopsanone was also evaluated against human cancer cell lines and showed activity to the U251 and K-562 cell lines, with GI50 values of 20.6 mu g/mL and 8.7 mu g/mL, respectively.7213714

Processo de trabalho dos agentes comunitários de saúde: possibilidades e limites

    No full text

Experimental Infection of Swine by Isospora suis Biester 1934 for Species Confirmation

    No full text
A survey of Isospora suis performed in 177 faecal samples from 30 swine farms detected thin wall type I. suis oocysts in seven samples. This type of oocyst measuring 23.9 by 20.7 mm had a retracted thin wall similar to that of the genus Sarcocystis. This type of oocysts, isolated from four different faecal samples, was inoculated in four-five-days-old piglets free of contamination in order to verify the life cycle and pathogenicity of the species. The pigs were kept in individual metal cages and fed with cow milk. Daily faecal collections and examinations were performed until the 21st day after infection. MacMaster and Sheather' s methods were used for oocyst counting and identification. Infected piglets produced yellowish-pasty diarrhoea with slight dehydration. The prepatent and patent periods were respectively from 6 to 9 and 3 to 10 days after infection. Oocyst elimination was interrupted on the 10th and 11th days after infection with biphasic cycles. Thin and thick wall oocysts were detected in the same faecal samples. Thin walls were not observed in unsporulated oocysts. The observations suggest that this type of oocysts could appear in specific strains which occur in the later stages of their development. These oocysts seem to be responsible for clinical and pathogenic signs of neonatal isosporosis in pigs
