FutureGRID: A Program for long-term research into GRID systems architecture

It is part of a larger vision for future systems architectures for public computing platforms, including
both scientitic GRID and commodity level computing such as games, peer2peer computing and storage
services and so forth, based on work in the laboratories in recent years into massively scaleable distributed systems for storage, computation, content distribution and collaboration[26]
Limitations for change detection in multiple Gabor targets
We investigate the limitations on the ability to detect when a target has changed, using Gabor targets as simple quantifiable stimuli. Using a partial report technique to equalise response variables, we show that the log of the Weber fraction for detecting a spatial frequency change is proportional to the log of the number of targets, with a set-size effect that is greater than that reported for visual search. This is not a simple perceptual limitation, because pre-cueing a single target out of four restores performance to the level found when only one target is present. It is argued that the primary limitation on performance is the division of attention across multiple targets, rather than decay within visual memory. However in a simplified change detection experiment without cueing, where only one target of the set changed, not only was the set size effect still larger, but it was greater at 2000 msec ISI than at 250 msec ISI, indicating a possible memory component. The steepness of the set size effects obtained suggests that even moderate complexity of a stimulus in terms of number of component objects can overload attentional processes, suggesting a possible low-level mechanism for change blindness
Seebeck Effect in Magnetic Tunnel Junctions
Creating temperature gradients in magnetic nanostructures has resulted in a
new research direction, i.e., the combination of magneto- and thermoelectric
effects. Here, we demonstrate the observation of one important effect of this
class: the magneto-Seebeck effect. It is observed when a magnetic configuration
changes the charge based Seebeck coefficient. In particular, the Seebeck
coefficient changes during the transition from a parallel to an antiparallel
magnetic configuration in a tunnel junction. In that respect, it is the analog
to the tunneling magnetoresistance. The Seebeck coefficients in parallel and
antiparallel configuration are in the order of the voltages known from the
charge-Seebeck effect. The size and sign of the effect can be controlled by the
composition of the electrodes' atomic layers adjacent to the barrier and the
temperature. Experimentally, we realized 8.8 % magneto-Seebeck effect, which
results from a voltage change of about -8.7 {\mu}V/K from the antiparallel to
the parallel direction close to the predicted value of -12.1 {\mu}V/K.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, 2 table
Classicalization and Unitarity
We point out that the scenario for UV completion by "classicalization",
proposed recently is in fact Wilsonian in the classical Wilsonian sense. It
corresponds to the situation when a field theory has a nontrivial UV fixed
point governed by a higher dimensional operator. Provided the kinetic term is a
relevant operator around this point the theory will flow in the IR to the free
scalar theory. Physically, "classicalization", if it can be realized, would
correspond to a situation when the fluctuations of the field operator in the UV
are smaller than in the IR. As a result there exists a clear tension between
the "classicalization" scenario and constraints imposed by unitarity on a
quantum field theory, making the existence of classicalizing unitary theories

The FeSi phase diagram to 150 GPa
The melting curve of FeSi has been determined to 150 GPa in the laser-heated diamond anvil cell (LH-DAC) on the basis of discontinuities in the power versus temperature function. A multianvil experimental cross-check at 12 GPa using textural criteria as a proxy for melting is in good agreement with our LH-DAC results. The melting point of FeSi reaches ∼4000 K at the core mantle boundary and an extrapolated value of 4900 K at the inner-core boundary (ICB). We also present the melting curve as determined by the Lindemann melting law; this agrees well with our experimental curve to 70 GPa and then diverges to higher temperatures, reaching 6200 K at the ICB. These temperatures are substantially higher than previous LH-DAC determinations. The boundary of the ε-FeSi → CsCl-FeSi subsolidus transition has also been determined by synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction at high pressures, and the results confirm a negative Clapeyron slope for the transition. We conclude that if present, FeSi is likely to be solid within the D″ layer and is unlikely to be present within the inner core for any plausible bulk core silicon content.9 page(s
Lp Fourier multipliers on compact Lie groups
In this paper we prove Lp multiplier theorems for invariant and non-invariant
operators on compact Lie groups in the spirit of the well-known
Hormander-Mikhlin theorem on Rn and its variants on tori Tn. We also give
applications to a-priori estimates for non-hypoelliptic operators. Already in
the case of tori we get an interesting refinement of the classical multiplier

The cellular senescence response and neuroinflammation in juvenile mice following controlled cortical impact and repetitive mild traumatic brain injury.
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of disability and increases the risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases. The mechanisms linking TBI to neurodegeneration remain to be defined. It has been proposed that the induction of cellular senescence after injury could amplify neuroinflammation and induce long-term tissue changes. The induction of a senescence response post-injury in the immature brain has yet to be characterised. We carried out two types of brain injury in juvenile CD1 mice: invasive TBI using controlled cortical impact (CCI) and repetitive mild TBI (rmTBI) using weight drop injury. The analysis of senescence-related signals showed an increase in γH2AX-53BP1 nuclear foci, p53, p19ARF, and p16INK4a expression in the CCI group, 5 days post-injury (dpi). At 35 days, the difference was no longer statistically significant. Gene expression showed the activation of different senescence pathways in the ipsilateral and contralateral hemispheres in the injured mice. CCI-injured mice showed a neuroinflammatory early phase after injury (increased Iba1 and GFAP expression), which persisted for GFAP. After CCI, there was an increase at 5 days in p16INK4, whereas in rmTBI, a significant increase was seen at 35 dpi. Both injuries caused a decrease in p21 at 35 dpi. In rmTBI, other markers showed no significant change. The PCR array data predicted the activation of pathways connected to senescence after rmTBI. These results indicate the induction of a complex cellular senescence and glial reaction in the immature mouse brain, with clear differences between an invasive brain injury and a repetitive mild injury
The microaerophilic microbiota of de-novo paediatric inflammatory bowel disease: the BISCUIT study
<p>Introduction: Children presenting for the first time with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) offer a unique opportunity to study aetiological agents before the confounders of treatment. Microaerophilic bacteria can exploit the ecological niche of the intestinal epithelium; Helicobacter and Campylobacter are previously implicated in IBD pathogenesis. We set out to study these and other microaerophilic bacteria in de-novo paediatric IBD.</p>
<p>Patients and Methods: 100 children undergoing colonoscopy were recruited including 44 treatment naïve de-novo IBD patients and 42 with normal colons. Colonic biopsies were subjected to microaerophilic culture with Gram-negative isolates then identified by sequencing. Biopsies were also PCR screened for the specific microaerophilic bacterial groups: Helicobacteraceae, Campylobacteraceae and Sutterella wadsworthensis.</p>
<p>Results: 129 Gram-negative microaerophilic bacterial isolates were identified from 10 genera. The most frequently cultured was S. wadsworthensis (32 distinct isolates). Unusual Campylobacter were isolated from 8 subjects (including 3 C. concisus, 1 C. curvus, 1 C. lari, 1 C. rectus, 3 C. showae). No Helicobacter were cultured. When comparing IBD vs. normal colon control by PCR the prevalence figures were not significantly different (Helicobacter 11% vs. 12%, p = 1.00; Campylobacter 75% vs. 76%, p = 1.00; S. wadsworthensis 82% vs. 71%, p = 0.312).</p>
<p>Conclusions: This study offers a comprehensive overview of the microaerophilic microbiota of the paediatric colon including at IBD onset. Campylobacter appear to be surprisingly common, are not more strongly associated with IBD and can be isolated from around 8% of paediatric colonic biopsies. S. wadsworthensis appears to be a common commensal. Helicobacter species are relatively rare in the paediatric colon.</p>
On the breaking of collinear factorization in QCD
We investigate the breakdown of collinear factorization for non-inclusive
observables in hadron-hadron collisions. For pure QCD processes, factorization
is violated at the three-loop level and it has a structure identical to that
encountered previously in the case of super-leading logarithms. In particular,
it is driven by the non-commutation of Coulomb/Glauber gluon exchanges with
other soft exchanges. Beyond QCD, factorization may be violated at the two-loop
level provided that the hard subprocess contains matrix element contributions
