No effect of repeated post-resistance exercise cold or hot water immersion on in-season body composition and performance responses in academy rugby players: a randomised controlled cross-over design
Following resistance exercise, uncertainty exists as to whether the regular application of cold water immersion attenuates lean muscle mass increases in athletes. The effects of repeated post-resistance exercise cold versus hot water immersion on body composition and neuromuscular jump performance responses in athletes were investigated. Male, academy Super Rugby players (n = 18, 19.9 ± 1.5 y, 1.85 ± 0.06 m, 98.3 ± 10.7 kg) participated in a 12-week (4-week × 3-intervention, i.e., control [CON], cold [CWI] or hot [HWI] water immersion) resistance exercise programme, utilising a randomised cross-over pre-post-design. Body composition measures were collected using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry prior to commencement and every fourth week thereafter. Neuromuscular squat (SJ) and counter-movement jump (CMJ) performance were measured weekly. Linear mixed-effects models were used to analyse main (treatment, time) and interaction effects. There were no changes in lean (p = 0.960) nor fat mass (p = 0.801) between interventions. CON (p = 0.004) and CWI (p = 0.003) increased (g = 0.08-0.19) SJ height, compared to HWI. There were no changes in CMJ height (p = 0.482) between interventions. Repeated post-resistance exercise whole-body CWI or HWI does not attenuate (nor promote) increases in lean muscle mass in athletes. Post-resistance exercise CON or CWI results in trivial increases in SJ height, compared to HWI. During an in-season competition phase, our data support the continued use of post-resistance exercise whole-body CWI by athletes as a recovery strategy which does not attenuate body composition increases in lean muscle mass, while promoting trivial increases in neuromuscular concentric-only squat jump performance. Long-Term Climate Forcing in Loggerhead Sea Turtle Nesting
The long-term variability of marine turtle populations remains poorly understood,
limiting science and management. Here we use basin-scale climate indices and
regional surface temperatures to estimate loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta
caretta) nesting at a variety of spatial and temporal scales.
Borrowing from fisheries research, our models investigate how oceanographic
processes influence juvenile recruitment and regulate population dynamics. This
novel approach finds local populations in the North Pacific and Northwest
Atlantic are regionally synchronized and strongly correlated to ocean
conditions—such that climate models alone explain up to 88% of the
observed changes over the past several decades. In addition to its performance,
climate-based modeling also provides mechanistic forecasts of historical and
future population changes. Hindcasts in both regions indicate climatic
conditions may have been a factor in recent declines, but future forecasts are
mixed. Available climatic data suggests the Pacific population will be
significantly reduced by 2040, but indicates the Atlantic population may
increase substantially. These results do not exonerate anthropogenic impacts,
but highlight the significance of bottom-up oceanographic processes to marine
organisms. Future studies should consider environmental baselines in assessments
of marine turtle population variability and persistence
The Mediterranean Sea Regime Shift at the End of the 1980s, and Intriguing Parallelisms with Other European Basins
Background: Regime shifts are abrupt changes encompassing a multitude of physical properties and ecosystem variables,
which lead to new regime conditions. Recent investigations focus on the changes in ecosystem diversity and functioning
associated to such shifts. Of particular interest, because of the implication on climate drivers, are shifts that occur
synchronously in separated basins.
Principal Findings: In this work we analyze and review long-term records of Mediterranean ecological and hydro-climate variables and find that all point to a synchronous change in the late 1980s. A quantitative synthesis of the literature (including observed oceanic data, models and satellite analyses) shows that these years mark a major change in Mediterranean hydrographic properties, surface circulation, and deep water convection (the Eastern Mediterranean Transient). We provide novel analyses that link local, regional and basin scale hydrological properties with two major indicators of large scale climate, the North Atlantic Oscillation index and the Northern Hemisphere Temperature index, suggesting that the Mediterranean shift is part of a large scale change in the Northern Hemisphere. We provide a simplified scheme of the different effects of climate vs. temperature on pelagic ecosystems.
Conclusions: Our results show that the Mediterranean Sea underwent a major change at the end of the 1980s that
encompassed atmospheric, hydrological, and ecological systems, for which it can be considered a regime shift. We further provide evidence that the local hydrography is linked to the larger scale, northern hemisphere climate. These results suggest that the shifts that affected the North, Baltic, Black and Mediterranean (this work) Seas at the end of the 1980s, that have been so far only partly associated, are likely linked as part a northern hemisphere change. These findings bear wide implications for the development of climate change scenarios, as synchronous shifts may provide the key for distinguishing local (i.e., basin) anthropogenic drivers, such as eutrophication or fishing, from larger scale (hemispheric) climate drivers
The visceral hybrid repair of thoraco-abdominal aortic aneurysms--a collaborative approach.
OBJECTIVE: To report the collaborative data of 3 major European Vascular Units using the 'visceral hybrid' procedure for thoraco-abdominal aortic aneurysms and dissections. METHODS: A consecutive series of 107 urgent and elective high-risk patients were included in a prospectively collected database. RESULTS: All stents involved the entire thoracic and abdominal aorta with left subclavian coverage in 19 and revascularisation in 12. The distal landing zone was in the infra-renal aorta in 75% and in the iliac artery in 25%. The 30-day mortality rate was 16/107 (14.95%). 13/107 (12.1%) of the patients suffered spinal cord ischaemia which was complete and permanent in 9/12 (8.4%). 4 patients (3.7%) required long term dialysis and a segment of gut infarction requiring resection occurred in 3 (2.8%). Most patients had visceral bypass grafting and aortic stent-grafting performed in one stage. In 18 patients the stenting was performed later. Three of these patients ruptured before the stenting procedure was undertaken. CONCLUSION: These early results of visceral hybrid repair for high-risk patients with complex thoraco-abdominal aortic aneurysms are encouraging, in a group of patients in whom fenestrated/branched stent-grafting is not an option and open surgery hazardous
Increased matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) activity observed in chronic wound fluid is related to the clinical severity of the ulcer
BACKGROUND: The pathology of chronic wounds is often characterized by elevated levels of proinflammatory cytokines [e.g. tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha and interleukin (IL)-1beta], proteases [e.g. matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs)] and neutrophil elastase. MMPs specifically have been implicated by a number of studies as the major protease family responsible for the degradation of key factors critical to the ulcer's ability to heal. OBJECTIVES: To assess individual MMPs in chronic wound fluid (CWF) in order to develop improved treatments for chronic ulcers. METHODS: Collagen type I and IV zymography, immunoprecipitation followed by a substrate activity assay, and an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay were all used to analyse MMP levels in CWF. RESULTS: Our studies demonstrate that there is excessive protease activity in CWF compared with both human serum and acute wound fluid (AWF), which can be specifically attributed to MMPs as determined through a MMP-inhibitor study. Multiple MMPs were immunoprecipitated from the CWF samples and MMP-9 was identified as the predominant protease in CWF, with significantly elevated activity levels in CWF compared with AWF. In addition, the clinical status of the ulcer is directly associated with the amounts of MMP-9 present in the wound fluid. Therefore, this study suggests that higher levels of MMP-9 in chronic wound fluid correlate with a clinically worse wound. CONCLUSIONS: In view of these results, it is hypothesized that a specific inhibitor of MMP-9 could potentially be more therapeutically effective than general MMP inhibitors in modulating chronic ulcers towards a healing state
