On the Asymptotic Dynamics of a Quantum System Composed by Heavy and Light Particles
We consider a non relativistic quantum system consisting of heavy and
light particles in dimension three, where each heavy particle interacts with
the light ones via a two-body potential . No interaction is assumed
among particles of the same kind. Choosing an initial state in a product form
and assuming sufficiently small we characterize the asymptotic
dynamics of the system in the limit of small mass ratio, with an explicit
control of the error. In the case K=1 the result is extended to arbitrary
. The proof relies on a perturbative analysis and exploits a
generalized version of the standard dispersive estimates for the
Schr\"{o}dinger group. Exploiting the asymptotic formula, it is also outlined
an application to the problem of the decoherence effect produced on a heavy
particle by the interaction with the light ones.Comment: 38 page
Quantum Machines
We discuss quantum information processing machines. We start with single
purpose machines that either redistribute quantum information or identify
quantum states. We then move on to machines that can perform a number of
functions, with the function they perform being determined by a program, which
is itself a quantum state. Examples of both deterministic and probabilistic
programmable machines are given, and we conclude with a discussion of the

The epidemiology and clinical features of rickettsial diseases in North Queensland, Australia: implications for patient identification and management
Background: Rickettsial infections are a common cause of hospitalization in tropical settings, although early diagnosis is challenging in the rural locations where these infections are usually seen.
Methods: This retrospective, clinical audit of microbiologically-confirmed cases of scrub typhus or spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsial infection between 1997 and 2016 was performed a tertiary referral hospital in tropical Australia. Clinical, laboratory and radiological findings at presentation were correlated with the patients’ subsequent clinical course.
Results: There were 135 locally-acquired cases (95 scrub typhus, 37 SFG, 3 undifferentiated). There were nine hospitalizations during the first 5 years of the study period and 81 in the last 5 years (p for trend = 0.003). Eighteen (13%) of the 135 cases required ICU admission, all of whom were adults. A greater proportion of patients with SFG infection required ICU support (8/37 (22%) compared with 10/95 (11%) scrub typhus cases), although this difference did not reach statistical significance (p = 0.10). Three (8%) of the 37 patients with SFG infection had severe disease (1 died, 2 developed permanent disability) versus 0/95 scrub typhus patients (p = 0.02). Adults with a high admission qSOFA score (≥2) had an odds ratio (OR) of 19 (95% CI:4.8–74.5) for subsequent ICU admission (p<0.001); adults with a high NEWS2 score (≥7) had an OR of 14.3 (95% CI:4.5–45.32) for ICU admission (p<0.001). A patient’s respiratory rate at presentation had strong prognostic utility: if an adult had an admission respiratory rate <22 breaths/minute, the negative predictive value for subsequent ICU admission was 95% (95% CI 88–99).
Conclusions: In the well-resourced Australian health system outcomes are excellent, but the local burden of rickettsial disease appears to be increasing and the clinical phenotype of SFG infections may be more severe than previously believed. Simple, clinical assessment on admission has prognostic utility and may be used to guide management
Optimized teleportation in Gaussian noisy channels
We address continuous variable quantum teleportation in Gaussian quantum
noisy channels, either thermal or squeezed-thermal. We first study the
propagation of twin-beam and evaluate a threshold for its separability. We find
that the threshold for purely thermal channels is always larger than for
squeezed-thermal ones. On the other hand, we show that squeezing the channel
improves teleportation of squeezed states and, in particular, we find the class
of squeezed states that are better teleported in a given noisy channel.
Finally, we find regimes where optimized teleportation of squeezed states
improves amplitude-modulated communication in comparison with direct
transmission
Massless BTZ black holes in minisuperspace
We study aspects of the propagation of strings on BTZ black holes. After
performing a careful analysis of the global spacetime structure of generic BTZ
black holes, and its relation to the geometry of the SL(2,R) group manifold, we
focus on the simplest case of the massless BTZ black hole. We study the SL(2,R)
Wess-Zumino-Witten model in the worldsheet minisuperspace limit, taking into
account special features associated to the Lorentzian signature of spacetime.
We analyse the two- and three-point functions in the pointparticle limit. To
lay bare the underlying group structure of the correlation functions, we derive
new results on Clebsch-Gordan coefficients for SL(2,R) in a parabolic basis. We
comment on the application of our results to string theory in singular
time-dependent orbifolds, and to a Lorentzian version of the AdS/CFT

Resummation of Nonalternating Divergent Perturbative Expansions
A method for the resummation of nonalternating divergent perturbation series
is described. The procedure constitutes a generalization of the Borel-Pad\'{e}
method. Of crucial importance is a special integration contour in the complex
plane. Nonperturbative imaginary contributions can be inferred from the purely
real perturbative coefficients. A connection is drawn from the quantum field
theoretic problem of resummation to divergent perturbative expansions in other

Comparison of usefulness of computer assisted continuous 48-h 3-lead with 12-lead ECG ischaemia monitoring for detection and quantitation of ischaemia in patients with unstable angina
AIMS: The selection of ECG leads used for ST monitoring may influence detection and quantitation of ischaemia. METHODS: We compared on-line continuous 48-h 12-lead against 3-lead ST monitoring in 130 unstable angina patients (Mortara. ELI-100). Onset and offset of ST episodes were defined by the lead with the first > or = 100 microV ST change relative to baseline and the lead with the latest return to baseline ST level, respectively. ST episodes were calculated for 12 leads and 3 leads (V2, V5, III) separately. RESULTS: ST episodes were detected in 88 patients (77%) by 12-lead and in 71 patients (62%) by 3-lead ST monitoring (P < 0.02). The median number (25.75%) of episodes/patient was 1 (0.3) for 3-lead and 2 (1.6) for 12-lead (P < 0.0001). The total duration of ischaemia detected during 12-lead far exceeded 3-lead monitoring: 12.3 (1, 58.2) and 1.7 (0, 23.3) min respectively (P < 0.0001). The probability of recurrent ischaemia declined most during the first 24 h of monitoring. After a period without ST changes of 1, 12, 24 and 36 h, the probabilities of recurrent ischaemia were 63, 31, 14 and 9%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Continuous 12-lead ST monitoring increases detection rate and duration of ST episodes compared to 3-lead ST monitoring. The use of continuous 12-lead ECG monitoring devices on emergency wards and coronary care units is recommended
Continuity of the measure of the spectrum for quasiperiodic Schrodinger operators with rough potentials
We study discrete quasiperiodic Schr\"odinger operators on \ell^2(\zee)
with potentials defined by -H\"older functions. We prove a general
statement that for and under the condition of positive Lyapunov
exponents, measure of the spectrum at irrational frequencies is the limit of
measures of spectra of periodic approximants. An important ingredient in our
analysis is a general result on uniformity of the upper Lyapunov exponent of

Randomized controlled trial of intravenous antivenom versus placebo for latrodectism: the second redback antivenom evaluation (RAVE- II) study.
Objective: Latrodectism is the most important spider envenomation syndrome worldwide. There remains considerable controversy over antivenom treatment. We aimed to investigate whether antivenom resulted in resolution of pain and systemic effects in patients with latrodectism given standardized analgesia. Methods: In a multicentre randomized placebo-controlled trial of redback spider antivenom for latrodectism, 224 patients (>7yr) with a redback spider-bite and severe pain with or without systemic effects were randomized to receive normal saline (placebo) or antivenom, after receiving standardized analgesia. The primary outcome was a clinically significant reduction in pain 2 hours after trial medication compared to baseline. A second primary outcome for the subgroup with systemic features of envenomation was resolution of systemic features at 2 hours. Secondary outcomes were improved pain at 4 and 24 hours, resolution of systemic features at 4 hours, administration of opioid analgesics or unblinded antivenom after 2 hours and adverse reactions. Results: Two hours after treatment, 26/112 patients (23%) from the placebo arm had a clinically significant improvement in pain versus 38/112 (34%) from the antivenom arm (difference in favor of antivenom 10.7%;95%CI:−1.1% to +22.6%;p=0.10). Systemic 2 effects resolved after two hours in 9/41 patients (22%) in the placebo arm and 9/35 (26%) in the antivenom arm (difference 3.8%;95%CI:−15% to +23%;p=0.79). There was no significant difference in any secondary outcome between antivenom and placebo. Acute systemic hypersensitivity reactions occurred in 4/112 (3.6%) patients given antivenom. Conclusions: The addition of antivenom to standardized analgesia in patients with latrodectism, did not significantly improve pain or systemic effects.NHMRC 54522
