Impurity-enhanced Aharonov-Bohm effect in neutral quantum-ring magnetoexcitons
We study the role of impurity scattering on the photoluminescence (PL)
emission of polarized magnetoexcitons. We consider systems where both the
electron and hole are confined on a ring structure (quantum rings) as well as
on a type-II quantum dot. Despite their neutral character, excitons exhibit
strong modulation of energy and oscillator strength in the presence of magnetic
fields. Scattering impurities enhance the PL intensity on otherwise "dark"
magnetic field windows and non-zero PL emission appears for a wide magnetic
field range even at zero temperature. For higher temperatures, impurity-induced
anticrossings on the excitonic spectrum lead to unexpected peaks and valleys on
the PL intensity as function of magnetic field. Such behavior is absent on
ideal systems and can account for prominent features in recent experimental
results.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, RevTe
Hemodynamic responses during and after multiple sets of stretching exercises performed with and without the Valsalva maneuver
OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the acute hemodynamic responses to multiple sets of passive stretching exercises performed with and without the Valsalva maneuver. METHODS: Fifteen healthy men aged 21 to 29 years with poor flexibility performed stretching protocols comprising 10 sets of maximal passive unilateral hip flexion, sustained for 30 seconds with equal intervals between sets. Protocols without and with the Valsalva maneuver were applied in a random counterbalanced order, separated by 48-hour intervals. Hemodynamic responses were measured by photoplethysmography pre-exercise, during the stretching sets, and post-exercise. RESULTS: The effects of stretching sets on systolic and diastolic blood pressure were cumulative until the fourth set in protocols performed with and without the Valsalva maneuver. The heart rate and rate pressure product increased in both protocols, but no additive effect was observed due to the number of sets. Hemodynamic responses were always higher when stretching was performed with the Valsalva maneuver, causing an additional elevation in the rate pressure product. CONCLUSIONS: Multiple sets of unilateral hip flexion stretching significantly increased blood pressure, heart rate, and rate pressure product values. A cumulative effect of the number of sets occurred only for systolic and diastolic blood pressure, at least in the initial sets of the stretching protocols. The performance of the Valsalva maneuver intensified all hemodynamic responses, which resulted in significant increases in cardiac work during stretching exercises
Aharonov-Bohm interferometry with quantum dots: scattering approach versus tunneling picture
We address the question of how to model electron transport through closed
Aharonov-Bohm interferometers which contain quantum dots. By explicitly
studying interferometers with one and two quantum dots, we establish the
connection between a tunneling-Hamiltonian formulation on the one hand and a
scattering-matrix approach on the other hand. We prove that, under certain
circumstances, both approaches are equivalent, i.e., both types of models can
describe the same experimental setups. Furthermore, we analyze how the
interplay of the Aharonov-Bohm phase and the orbital phase associated with the
lengths of the interferometers' arms affect transport properties.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, published versio
Structural signatures of water-soluble organic aerosols in contrasting environments in South America and Western Europe
This study describes and compares the key structural units present in water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) fraction of atmospheric aerosols collected in different South American (Colombia – Medellín and Bogotá, Peru – Lima, Argentina – Buenos Aires, and Brazil – Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Porto Velho, during moderate (MBB) and intense (IBB) biomass burning) and Western European (Portugal – Aveiro and Lisbon) locations. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy was employed to assess the relative distribution of non-exchangeable proton functional groups in aerosol WSOC of diverse origin, for the first time to the authors’ knowledge in South America. The relative contribution of the proton functional groups was in the order H-C > H–C–C= > H-C-O > Ar-H, except in Porto Velho during MBB, Medellín, Bogotá, and Buenos Aires, for which the relative contribution of H-C-O was higher than that of H-C-C=. The 1H NMR source attribution confirmed differences in aging processes or regional sources between the two geographic regions, allowing the differentiation between urban combustion-related aerosol and biological particles. The aerosol WSOC in Aveiro, Lisbon, and Rio de Janeiro during summer are more oxidized than those from the remaining locations, indicating the predominance of secondary organic aerosols. Fresh emissions, namely of smoke particles, becomes important during winter in Aveiro and São Paulo, and in Porto Velho during IBB. The biosphere is an important source altering the chemical composition of aerosol WSOC in South America locations. The source attribution in Medellín, Bogotá, Buenos Aires, and Lima confirmed the mixed contributions of biological material, secondary formation, as well as urban and biomass burning emissions. Overall, the information and knowledge acquired in this study provide important diagnostic tools for future studies aiming at understanding the water-soluble organic aerosol problem, their sources and impact at a wider geographic scale.Fil: Duarte, Regina M.B.O.. Incidence of healthcare-associated Clostridioides difficile infection in a quaternary referral university hospital in Brazil
Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) is an important cause of diarrhea in hospitals worldwide. The incidence of CDI in Latin America has not yet been standardized. To fill this gap, the present study performed a daily active surveillance, for three months, between April to July of 2021, at a quaternary referral university hospital in Brazil. The incidence density was 9.2 cases per 10,000 patient-days. Cases were associated mostly with ribotypes 014 and 106 (44% and 22%, respectively). Ribotype 027 was not identified. The findings strongly reinforce the need for broad epidemiological studies on the incidence of CDI in Brazilian hospitals to increase the understanding, prevention, and treatment of this infection.(c) 2022 Elsevier Ltd. Explaining the Higgs Decays at the LHC with an Extended Electroweak Model
We show that the recent discovery of a new boson at the LHC, which we assume
to be a Higgs boson, and the observed enhancement in its diphoton decays
compared to the SM prediction, can be explained by a new doublet of charged
vector bosons from an extended electroweak gauge sector model with
SU(3)_C\otimesSU(3)_L\otimesU(1)_X symmetry. Our results show a good
agreement between our theoretical expected sensitivity to a 126--125 GeV Higgs
boson and the experimental significance observed in the diphoton channel at the
8 TeV LHC. Effects of an invisible decay channel for the Higgs boson are also
taken into account, in order to anticipate a possible confirmation of deficits
in the branching ratios into , , bottom quarks, and tau leptons.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figure
Searching for star-planet magnetic interaction in CoRoT observations
Close-in massive planets interact with their host stars through tidal and
magnetic mechanisms. In this paper, we review circumstantial evidence for
star-planet interaction as revealed by the photospheric magnetic activity in
some of the CoRoT planet-hosting stars, notably CoRoT-2, CoRoT-4, and CoRoT-6.
The phenomena are discussed in the general framework of activity-induced
features in stars accompanied by hot Jupiters. The theoretical mechanisms
proposed to explain the activity enhancements possibly related with hot Jupiter
are also briefly reviewed with an emphasis on the possible effects at
photospheric level. The unique advantages of CoRoT and Kepler observations to
test these models are pointed out.Comment: Invited review paper accepted by Astrophysics and Space Science, 13

Analysis of Peculiarities of the Stellar Velocity Field in the Solar Neighborhood
Based on a new version of the Hipparcos catalogue and an updated
Geneva-Copenhagen survey of F and G dwarfs, we analyze the space velocity field
of about 17000 single stars in the solar neighborhood. The main known clumps,
streams, and branches (Pleiades, Hyades, Sirius, Coma Berenices, Hercules, Wolf
630-alpha Ceti, and Arcturus) have been identified using various approaches.
The evolution of the space velocity field for F and G dwarfs has been traced as
a function of the stellar age. We have managed to confirm the existence of the
recently discovered KFR08 stream. We have found 19 Hipparcos stars, candidates
for membership in the KFR08 stream, and obtained an isochrone age estimate for
the stream, 13 Gyr. The mean stellar ages of the Wolf 630-alpha Ceti and
Hercules streams are shown to be comparable, 4--6 Gyr. No significant
differences in the metallicities of stars belonging to these streams have been
found. This is an argument for the hypothesis that these streams owe their
origin to a common mechanism.Comment: 23 pages, 9 figure
