Education and development in early childhood in two portuguese cultural contexts: the mainland and Azores
The various aspects of a child’s development (physical, psychological, emotional, relational, cognitive, linguistic, perceptive, and motor), as well as the child’s needs and attitudes, are key throughout his/her life and have been studied over the years by various researchers. We will examine the similarities and differences observed in the education and stimulation of children in two cultural contexts: on the Portuguese mainland (Lisbon, Almada, Santarém, Almeirim, and Portalegre regions) and Azorean islands (São Miguel, Pico, and Terceira). Our research focussed on children’s upbringing and development in the following areas: food and hygiene; cognitive and linguistic development; perceptual and motor development; emotional and relational development; sleep; and play and childcare practices. We identify several aspects that contribute to children’s positive physical and psychological development in the first two years of life, both on the mainland and in the Azores, examining aspects, such as sensory stimulation, sleep, types of play, and toys.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
A consistent discrete version of a non-autonomous SIRVS model
A family of discrete non-autonomous SIRVS models with general incidence is
obtained from a continuous family of models by applying Mickens non-standard
discretization method. Conditions for the permanence and extinction of the
disease and the stability of disease-free solutions are determined. The
consistency of those discrete models with the corresponding continuous model is
discussed: if the time step is sufficiently small, when we have extinction
(respectively permanence) for the continuous model we also have extinction
(respectively permanence) for the corresponding discrete model. Some numerical
simulations are carried out to compare the different possible discretizations
of our continuous model using real data.Comment: 20 figures, 29 page
Sharp mixed norm spherical restriction
Let be an integer and let . In this paper
we investigate the sharp form of the mixed norm Fourier extension inequality
\begin{equation*} \big\|\widehat{f\sigma}\big\|_{L^q_{{\rm rad}}L^2_{{\rm
ang}}(\mathbb{R}^d)} \leq {\bf C}_{d,q}\, \|f\|_{L^2(\mathbb{S}^{d-1},{\rm
d}\sigma)}, \end{equation*} established by L. Vega in 1988. Letting
be the set of exponents for which
the constant functions on are the unique extremizers of this
inequality, we show that: (i) contains the even integers and
; (ii) is an open set in the extended topology; (iii)
contains a neighborhood of infinity with
. In low dimensions we
show that . In particular, this breaks for the first time the even
exponent barrier in sharp Fourier restriction theory. The crux of the matter in
our approach is to establish a hierarchy between certain weighted norms of
Bessel functions, a nontrivial question of independent interest within the
theory of special functions.Comment: 21 page
Optimization of the sustainability during the refurbishment operation of a residential building
Most of the existing buildings have high resources consumption and low indoor
environmental quality, leading to the unsustainability of the built environment.
Being aware of this reality and based in the European goal to achieve Nearly-Zero Energy
consumption standard in buildings, it is urgent to define guidelines that could support the
sustainable refurbishment design since the earlier stages. This paper intends to illustrate the process of sustainable building refurbishment, supported by different guidelines applied to a case study. To achieve this goal the definition and evaluation of
a group of procedures to be implemented, and a cost-benefit analysis applied to a case study was performed, having as final goal its sustainability optimization
Optimization of the sustainability during the refurbishment design phase of a residential building using SBToolpt-H
As it has been observed along the years, the unsustainability of the built environment is due to the high resources consumption and low indoor air quality of the existing building stock. In order to support the sustainable refurbishment design of buildings, and to meet European goal to achieve nearly zero-energy consumption standards in buildings in 2020, it is urgent to define guidelines that can be implemented since the earlier stages of the design. This paper defines guidelines to optimize the sustainability of a residential building and presents the process of sustainable building refurbishment, applied to a case study. To achieve this goal, the definition and evaluation of a group of procedures to be implemented, and a cost-benefit analysis applied to a case study was performed
Existence of periodic solutions of a periodic SEIRS model with general incidence.
For a family of periodic SEIRS models with general incidence, we prove the existence
of at least one endemic periodic orbit when some condition related to R0 holds.
Additionally, we prove the existence of a unique disease-free periodic orbit, that
is globally asymptotically stable when R0 < 1. In particular, our main result
generalizes the one in Zhang et al. (2012). We also discuss some examples where
our results apply and show that, in some particular situations, we have a sharp
threshold between existence and non existence of an endemic periodic orbit
