    Mixed contracts for the newsvendor problem with real options

    In this paper we consider the newsvendor model with real options. We consider a mixed contract where the retailer can order a combination of q units subject to the conditions in a classical newsvendor contract and Q real options on the same items. We provide a closed form solution to this mixed contract when the demand is discrete and study some of its properties. We also offer an explicit solution for the continuous case. In particular we demonstrate that a mixed contract may be superior to a real option contract when a manufacturer has a bound on how much variance she is willing to accept.Newsvendor model; real options; discrete demand; mixed contract

    How Leadership Dynamics Differs in High- and Low- Performing Firms in a Sustainable Innovation Context : A Qualitative Case Study from the Health Tech Sector

    Leadership is essential to achieving sustainable innovation, yet research to date on innovation tends to focus on individual leaders, while innovation leadership appears to be a collective and dynamic process. While extant literature has examined collective leadership dynamics research regarding how collective leadership dynamics play out over time in sustainable innovative firms over time is nascent. This thesis is bridging the gap in the literature by examining the leadership dynamics in sustainable innovation companies. Specifically, to explore these dynamics, we conduct an explorative multi-case qualitative study in the health tech sector interviewing leaders in five companies in total, three high-performing and two lowperforming companies. The findings overall reveal key differences in high- and lowperforming firms. First, collective leadership dynamics varies along two dimensions, changeable roles, and fluid contributions. Second, these dynamics along these two dimensions differ through three phases, the initial (1), investment (2), and launching phases (3). While high- and low-performing companies have similar dynamics in the initial phase 1) with collective processes and interchangeable roles, differences in dynamics appear in the investment (2) and launching phases (3). While an influx of tension from new individuals is affecting both the high- and low-performing companies, differences appear in how they handle such tensions. In the second and third phase, the high-performing companies manage to utilize tension and at the same time build a more structured company where competency and delegation are critical. Low-performing companies experience the tension as a negative disturbance, where collective leadership appears to coincide with the CEO´s role in the company weakens. The findings contribute to understanding the relationship between the collective leadership, along two dynamic dimensions, and how this relates to growth in a sustainable innovation context.nhhma

    A maximum entropy approach to the newsvendor problem with partial information

    In this paper, we consider the newsvendor model under partial information, i.e., where the demand distribution D is partly unknown. We focus on the classical case where the retailer only knows the expectation and variance of D. The standard approach is then to determine the order quantity using conservative rules such as minimax regret or Scarf's rule. We compute instead the most likely demand distribution in the sense of maximum entropy. We then compare the performance of the maximum entropy approach with minimax regret and Scarf's rule on large samples of randomly drawn demand distributions. We show that the average performance of the maximum entropy approach is considerably better than either alternative, and more surprisingly, that it is in most cases a better hedge against bad results.Newsvendor model; entropy; partial information

    Androgen action via testicular arteriole smooth muscle cells is important for leydig cell function, vasomotion and testicular fluid dynamics

    Regulation of blood flow through the testicular microvasculature by vasomotion is thought to be important for normal testis function as it regulates interstitial fluid (IF) dynamics which is an important intra-testicular transport medium. Androgens control vasomotion, but how they exert these effects remains unclear. One possibility is by signalling via androgen receptors (AR) expressed in testicular arteriole smooth muscle cells. To investigate this and determine the overall importance of this mechanism in testis function, we generated a blood vessel smooth muscle cell-specific AR knockout mouse (SMARKO). Gross reproductive development was normal in SMARKO mice but testis weight was reduced in adulthood compared to control littermates; this reduction was not due to any changes in germ cell volume or to deficits in testosterone, LH or FSH concentrations and did not cause infertility. However, seminiferous tubule lumen volume was reduced in adult SMARKO males while interstitial volume was increased, perhaps indicating altered fluid dynamics; this was associated with compensated Leydig cell failure. Vasomotion was impaired in adult SMARKO males, though overall testis blood flow was normal and there was an increase in the overall blood vessel volume per testis in adult SMARKOs. In conclusion, these results indicate that ablating arteriole smooth muscle AR does not grossly alter spermatogenesis or affect male fertility but does subtly impair Leydig cell function and testicular fluid exchange, possibly by locally regulating microvascular blood flow within the testis

    A fast strong coupling algorithm for the partitioned fluid–structure interaction simulation of BMHVs

    The numerical simulation of Bileaflet Mechanical Heart Valves (BMHVs) has gained strong interest in the last years, as a design and optimisation tool. In this paper, a strong coupling algorithm for the partitioned fluidstructure interaction simulation of a BMHV is presented. The convergence of the coupling iterations between the flow solver and the leaflet motion solver is accelerated by using the Jacobian with the derivatives of the pressure and viscous moments acting on the leaflets with respect to the leaflet accelerations. This Jacobian is numerically calculated from the coupling iterations. An error analysis is done to derive a criterion for the selection of useable coupling iterations. The algorithm is successfully tested for two 3D cases of a BMHV and a comparison is made with existing coupling schemes. It is observed that the developed coupling scheme outperforms these existing schemes in needed coupling iterations per time step and CPU time

    Phosphocholine-Modified Lipooligosaccharides of Haemophilus influenzae Inhibit ATP-Induced IL-1beta Release by Pulmonary Epithelial Cells

    Phosphocholine-modified bacterial cell wall components are virulence factors enabling immune evasion and permanent colonization of the mammalian host, by mechanisms that are poorly understood. Recently, we demonstrated that free phosphocholine (PC) and PC-modified lipooligosaccharides (PC-LOS) from Haemophilus influenzae, an opportunistic pathogen of the upper and lower airways, function as unconventional nicotinic agonists and efficiently inhibit the ATP-induced release of monocytic IL-1beta. We hypothesize that H. influenzae PC-LOS exert similar effects on pulmonary epithelial cells and on the complex lung tissue. The human lung carcinoma-derived epithelial cell lines A549 and Calu-3 were primed with lipopolysaccharide from Escherichia coli followed by stimulation with ATP in the presence or absence of PC or PC-LOS or LOS devoid of PC. The involvement of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors was tested using specific antagonists. We demonstrate that PC and PC-LOS efficiently inhibit ATP-mediated IL-1beta release by A549 and Calu-3 cells via nicotinic acetylcholine receptors containing subunits alpha7, alpha9, and/or alpha10. Primed precision-cut lung slices behaved similarly. We conclude that H. influenzae hijacked an endogenous anti-inflammatory cholinergic control mechanism of the lung to evade innate immune responses of the host. These findings may pave the way towards a host-centered antibiotic treatment of chronic airway infections with H. influenzae
