Functional Crosstalk between Lysine Methyltransferases on Histone Substrates: The Case of G9A/GLP and Polycomb Repressive Complex 2

    Get PDF
Significance: Methylation of histone H3 on lysine 9 and 27 (H3K9 and H3K27) are two epigenetic modifications that have been linked to several crucial biological processes, among which are transcriptional silencing and cell differentiation. Recent Advances: Deposition of these marks is catalyzed by H3K9 lysine methyltransferases (KMTs) and polycomb repressive complex 2, respectively. Increasing evidence is emerging in favor of a functional crosstalk between these two major KMT families. Critical Issues: Here, we review the current knowledge on the mechanisms of action and function of these enzymes, with particular emphasis on their interplay in the regulation of chromatin states and biological processes. We outline their crucial roles played in tissue homeostasis, by controlling the fate of embryonic and tissue-specific stem cells, highlighting how their deregulation is often linked to the emergence of a number of malignancies and neurological disorders. Future Directions: Histone methyltransferases are starting to be tested as drug targets. A new generation of highly selective chemical inhibitors is starting to emerge. These hold great promise for a rapid translation of targeting epigenetic drugs into clinical practice for a number of aggressive cancers and neurological disorders

    Get PDF
&nbsp

The objective was to examine predictors of perceived quality of care and contraceptive use and to provide more information on the influence of social marketing programs on quality of care and contraceptive use by comparing Greenstar social marketing outlets with other commercial health establishments. This study is based on an urban exit survey of 5,321 clients conducted in May and June 2001. Quality of care was measured in terms of features clients liked at the health establishments they visited. Predictors of contraceptive use include indicators of quality of care, social environment, exposure to channels of communication, exposure to Greenstar information, and background characteristics. Analysis involved descriptive statistics and logistic regression. Of the clients interviewed, 5 1 percent were male; 89 percent were at least 25 years old; 93 percent had at least one child; and 72 percent had some schooling. The results show that perceived quality of care varied according to sex, years of schooling, and how often clients listened to the radio or watched TV. Significant predictors of contraceptive use were years of schooling, number of children, how often a client listened to the radio or watched TV, awareness of the Greenstar logo and what it represented, and perceived quality of care--closeness of the health establishment to home or work, affordable fees, availability of a doctor at the outlet, and knowledgeability of the provider. Results suggest that social marketing programs have an impact on both quality of care and creating a demand for contraceptives. Program interventions that increase the perceived quality of care at a health establishment may attract more family planning clients and increase contraceptive use among couples in Pakistan. Workplace Artificial Intelligence (AI) helps organisations increase operational efficiency, enable faster-informed decisions, and innovate products and services. While there is a plethora of information about how AI may provide value to workplaces, research on how workers and AI can coexist in workplaces is evolving. It is critical to explore emerging themes and research agendas to understand the trajectory of scholarly research in this area. This study’s overarching research question is how workers will coexist with AI in workplaces. A search protocol was employed to find relevant articles in Scopus, ProQuest, and Web of Science databases based on appropriate and specific keywords and article inclusion and exclusion criteria. We identified four themes: (1) Workers’ distrust in workplace AI stems from perceiving it as a job threat, (2) Workplace AI entices worker-AI interactions by offering to augment worker abilities, (3) AI and worker coexistence require workers’ technical, human, and conceptual skills, and (4) Workers need ongoing reskilling and upskilling to contribute to a symbiotic relationship with workplace AI. We then developed four propositions with relevant research questions for future research. This review makes four contributions: (1) it argues that an existential argument better explains workers’ distrust in AI, (2) it gathers the required skills for worker and AI coexistence and groups them into technical, human, and conceptual skills, (3) it suggests that technical skills benefit coexistence but cannot outweigh human and conceptual skills, and (4) it offers 20 evidence-informed research questions to guide future scholarly inquiries

MLP neural network based gas classification system on Zynq SoC

Systems based on Wireless Gas Sensor Networks (WGSN) offer a powerful tool to observe and analyse data in complex environments over long monitoring periods. Since the reliability of sensors is very important in those systems, gas classification is a critical process within the gas safety precautions. A gas classification system has to react fast in order to take essential actions in case of fault detection. This paper proposes a low latency real-time gas classification service system, which uses a Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to detect and classify the gas sensor data. An accurate MLP is developed to work with the data set obtained from an array of tin oxide (SnO2) gas sensor, based on convex Micro hotplates (MHP). The overall system acquires the gas sensor data through RFID, and processes the sensor data with the proposed MLP classifier implemented on a System on Chip (SoC) platform from Xilinx. Hardware implementation of the classifier is optimized to achieve very low latency for real-time application. The proposed architecture has been implemented on a ZYNQ SoC using fixed-point format and achieved results have shown that an accuracy of 97.4% has been obtained

In this study four samn samples prepared from cow milk using two processing methods (traditional T1, T2 and factory processed T3, T4) were investigated for their physico-chemical properties, fatty acids composition, oxidative stability and sensory properties. The traditionally processed samples showed a significance difference (p < 0.05) in peroxide value and acid value in comparison to factory processed ones. The peroxide value was 2.5 meq O2/kg of samn for both T3 and T4 samples, which was higherthan the peroxide value of T1 and T2, which was 1.5 and 2.0, respectively. The acid value of T3, T4, T1 and T2 are 2.58, 2.54, 1.122 and 1.121, respectively. The results showed that the FFA% of T3, T4, T1 andT2 are 1.29, 1.27, 0.6 and 0.6, respectively. The major fatty acids of the four samn samples were palmitic, oleic, stearic, myristic and capric acid. T3 and T4 contain high percentage of palmitc acid 37.29 and 39.23%, respectively. Traditionally processed sample T1 contains high amount of oleic acid (26.1%) in comparison with the other three samples. Method of processing affects samn properties, quality and oxidative stability, where traditionally processed samples were significantly preferred (P 0.05) by the panelists for their color, odor, taste and overall acceptability to the factory processed samples
