pi^0 pi^0 Scattering Amplitudes and Phase Shifts Obtained by the pi^- P Charge Exchange Process
The results of the analysis of the pi^0 pi^0 scattering amplitudes obtained
with pi^- P charge exchange reaction, pi^- P --> pi^0 pi^0 n, data at 9 GeV/c
are presented. The pi^0 pi^0 scattering amplitudes show clear f_0(1370) and
f_2(1270) signals in the S and D waves, respectively. The pi^0 pi^0 scattering
phase shifts have been obtained below Kbar K threshold and been analyzed by the
Interfering Amplitude method with introduction of negative background phases.
The results show a S wave resonance, sigma. Its Breit-Wigner parameters are in
good agreement with those of our previous analysis on the pi^+ pi^- phase shift
data.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. Proceedings of the int. conf. Hadron'99 at

Chaos in a low-order model of magnetoconvection
In the limit of tall, thin rolls, weakly nonlinear convection in a vertical magnetic field is described by an asymptotically exact third-order set of ordinary differential equations. These equations are shown here to have three codimension-two bifurcation points: a Takens-Bogdanov bifurcation, at which a gluing bifurcation is created; a point at which the gluing bifurcation is replaced by a pair of homoclinic explosions between which there are Lorenz-like chaotic trajectories; and a new type of bifurcation point at which the first of a cascade of period-doubling bifurcation lines originates. The last two bifurcation points are analysed in terms of a one-dimensional map. The equations also have a T-point, at which there is a heteroclinic connection between a saddle and a pair of saddle-foci; emerging from this point is a line of Shil'nikov bifurcations, involving homoclinic connections to a saddle-focus
Spectroscopy by frequency entangled photon pairs
Quantum spectroscopy was performed using the frequency-entangled broadband
photon pairs generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion. An absorptive
sample was placed in front of the idler photon detector, and the frequency of
signal photons was resolved by a diffraction grating. The absorption spectrum
of the sample was measured by counting the coincidences, and the result is in
agreement with the one measured by a conventional spectrophotometer with a
classical light source.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, to be published in Phys. Lett.
reaction at intermediate energies
The reaction is considered at the energies between 200 MeV and
520 MeV. The Alt-Grassberger-Sandhas equations are iterated up to the lowest
order terms over the nucleon-nucleon t-matrix. The parameterized wave
function including five components is used. The angular dependence of the
differential cross section and energy dependence of tensor analyzing power
at the zero scattering angle are presented in comparison with the
experimental data
Approximate Particle Number Projection for Rotating Nuclei
Pairing correlations in rotating nuclei are discussed within the
Lipkin-Nogami method. The accuracy of the method is tested for the
Krumlinde-Szyma\'nski R(5) model. The results of calculations are compared with
those obtained from the standard mean field theory and particle-number
projection method, and with exact solutions.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures available on request, REVTEX3.
Space-Time Distribution of G-Band and Ca II H-Line Intensity Oscillations in Hinode/SOT-FG Observations
We study the space-time distributions of intensity fluctuations in 2 - 3 hour
sequences of multi-spectral, high-resolution, high-cadence broad-band
filtergram images (BFI) made by the SOT-FG system aboard the Hinode spacecraft.
In the frequency range 5.5 < f < 8.0 mHz both G-band and Ca II H-line
oscillations are suppressed in the presence of magnetic fields, but the
suppression disappears for f > 10 mHz. By looking at G-band frequencies above
10 mHz we find that the oscillatory power, both at these frequencies and at
lower frequencies too, lies in a mesh pattern with cell scale 2 - 3 Mm, clearly
larger than normal granulation, and with correlation times on the order of
hours. The mesh pattern lies in the dark lanes between stable cells found in
time-integrated G-band intensity images. It also underlies part of the bright
pattern in time-integrated H-line emission. This discovery may reflect
dynamical constraints on the sizes of rising granular convection cells together
with the turbulence created in strong intercellular downflows.Comment: 24 pages, 15 figure
Metallic ferromagnetism without exchange splitting
In the band theory of ferromagnetism there is a relative shift in the
position of majority and minority spin bands due to the self-consistent field
due to opposite spin electrons. In the simplest realization, the Stoner model,
the majority and minority spin bands are rigidly shifted with respect to each
other. Here we consider models at the opposite extreme, where there is no
overall shift of the energy bands. Instead, upon spin polarization one of the
bands broadens relative to the other. Ferromagnetism is driven by the resulting
gain in kinetic energy. A signature of this class of mechanisms is that a
transfer of spectral weight in optical absorption from high to low frequencies
occurs upon spin polarization. We show that such models arise from generalized
tight binding models that include off-diagonal matrix elements of the Coulomb
interaction. For certain parameter ranges it is also found that reentrant
ferromagnetism occurs. We examine properties of these models at zero and finite
temperatures, and discuss their possible relevance to real materials
I=3/2 Scattering in the Nonrelativisitic Quark Potential Model
We study elastic scattering to Born order using
nonrelativistic quark wavefunctions in a constituent-exchange model. This
channel is ideal for the study of nonresonant meson-meson scattering amplitudes
since s-channel resonances do not contribute significantly. Standard quark
model parameters yield good agreement with the measured S- and P-wave phase
shifts and with PCAC calculations of the scattering length. The P-wave phase
shift is especially interesting because it is nonzero solely due to
symmetry breaking effects, and is found to be in good agreement with experiment
given conventional values for the strange and nonstrange constituent quark
masses.Comment: 12 pages + 2 postscript figures, Revtex, MIT-CTP-210
Microscopic transition potential: Determination of and coupling constants
A transition potential, based on an effective
quark-quark interaction and a constituent quark cluster model for baryons, is
derived in the Born-Oppenheimer approach. The potential shows significant
differences with respect to those obtained by a direct scaling of the
nucleon-nucleon interaction. From its asymptotic behavior we extract the values
of and coupling constants in a
particular coupling schemeComment: 15 eps figures, Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
A study of the centrally produced baryon-antibaryon systems in pp interactions at 450 GeV/c
A study of the centrally produced ppbar, ppbarpi, ppbarpipi and lambda lambda
channels has been performed in pp collisions using an incident beam momentum of
450 GeV/c. No significant new structures are observed in the mass spectra,
however, important new information on the production dynamics is obtained. A
systematic study of the production properties of these systems has been
performed and it is found that these systems are not produced dominantly by
double Pomeron exchange.Comment: 13 pages, Latex, 4 Figure
