The Nature of the Chemical Bond. VII. The Calculation of Resonance Energy in Conjugated Systems
The quantum‐mechanical treatment previously applied to benzene, naphthalene, and the hydrocarbon free radicals is used in the calculation of extra resonance energy of conjugation in systems of double bonds, the dihydronaphthalenes and dihydroanthracenes, phenylethylene, stilbene, isostilbene, triphenylethylene, tetraphenylethylene, biphenyl, o, m, and p‐diphenylbenzene, and 1,3,5‐triphenylbenzene. The calculated values, which are in approximate agreement with empirical values from thermochemical data, are used in the discussion of chemical properties and in the formulation of rules regarding conjugation in overlapping systems

Proteasome Inhibitors: Harnessing Proteostasis to Combat Disease
The proteasome is the central component of the main cellular protein degradation pathway. During the past four decades, the critical function of the proteasome in numerous physiological processes has been revealed, and proteasome activity has been linked to various human diseases. The proteasome prevents the accumulation of misfolded proteins, controls the cell cycle, and regulates the immune response, to name a few important roles for this macromolecular “machine.” As a therapeutic target, proteasome inhibitors have been approved for the treatment of multiple myeloma and mantle cell lymphoma. However, inability to sufficiently inhibit proteasome activity at tolerated doses has hampered efforts to expand the scope of proteasome inhibitor-based therapies. With emerging new modalities in myeloma, it might seem challenging to develop additional proteasome-based therapies. However, the constant development of new applications for proteasome inhibitors and deeper insights into the intricacies of protein homeostasis suggest that proteasome inhibitors might have novel therapeutic applications. Herein, we summarize the latest advances in proteasome inhibitor development and discuss the future of proteasome inhibitors and other proteasome-based therapies in combating human diseases
Generalization of Boltzmann Equilibration Dynamics
We propose a novel approach in the study of transport phenomena in dense
systems or systems with long range interactions where multiple particle
interactions must be taken into consideration. Within Boltzmann's kinetic
formalism, we study the influence of other interacting particles in terms of a
random distortion of energy and momentum conservation occurring when
multi-particle interactions are considered as binary collisions. Energy and
momentum conservation still holds exactly but not in each model binary
collision. We show how this new system differs from the Boltzmann system and we
note that our approach naturally explains the emergence of Tsallis-like
equilibrium statistics in physically relevant systems in terms of the long

Coherent Excitation of the 6S1/2 to 5D3/2 Electric Quadrupole Transition in 138Ba+
The electric dipole-forbidden, quadrupole 6S1/2 5D3/2 transition in Ba+
near 2051 nm, with a natural linewidth of 13 mHz, is attractive for potential
observation of parity non-conservation, and also as a clock transition for a
barium ion optical frequency standard. This transition also offers a direct
means of populating the metastable 5D3/2 state to measure the nuclear magnetic
octupole moment in the odd barium isotopes. Light from a diode-pumped, solid
state Tm,Ho:YLF laser operating at 2051 nm is used to coherently drive this
transition between resolved Zeeman levels in a single trapped 138Ba+ ion. The
frequency of the laser is stabilized to a high finesse Fabry Perot cavity at
1025 nm after being frequency doubled. Rabi oscillations on this transition
indicate a laser-ion coherence time of 3 ms, most likely limited by ambient

Implicit Bias Reflects the Personal and the Social
This issue’s target article by Payne, Vuletich, and Lundberg (PV&L) does exactly what one should, presenting an argument that is thought-provoking and that challenges current orthodoxy. It also addresses an issue that has increasingly confounded attitudes researchers in recent years. The construct of “implicit bias” was initially conceptualized as a latent construct that exists within persons, relatively resistant to situational influences. A plethora of theoretical models converge on the notion that implicit biases, including intergroup biases, are representations that are stored in memory (e.g., Devine,1989; Fazio, Jackson, Dunton, & Williams, 1995; Gawronski & Bodenhausen, 2006; Greenwald et al., 2002; Wilson, Lindsay, & Schooler, 2000). Although some perspectives emphasize the role of culture in contributing to implicit measures of bias, even these perspectives rely on the learning and storage of mental representations (Olson & Fazio, 2004)
