Hydroalcoholic extracts of Vellozia squamata: study of its nanoemulsions for pharmaceutical or cosmetic applications
AbstractSome species of plants are notable for the wide range of biologically active constituents in their tissues. Chemical and pharmacological studies of Vellozia squamata Pohl, Velloziaceae, popularly known in Brasil as “canela-de-ema” are scarce, but showed the presence of di-and triterpenoid that may be of scientii c interest. In the present study the hydroalcoholic extracts from leafs and stems of V. squamata were submitted to phytochemical prospection to identify the principal groups of constituents, and the antioxidant activity was determined by DPPH method. The hydroethanolic extracts presented higher antioxidant activity. Thus, nanoemulsion formulations were prepared using the method of phase inversion. Accelerated stability tests, such as heat stress and centrifugation were made, and physical and chemical properties of the nanoemulsions were established. Stable formulations were obtained from both extracts from leafs and stems. By the results was possible to establish the potential application of hydroalcoholic extracts from V. squamata in development of products with antioxidant properties and demonstrate a promising pharmaceutical produc

Natural Orbitals and BEC in traps, a diffusion Monte Carlo analysis
We investigate the properties of hard core Bosons in harmonic traps over a
wide range of densities. Bose-Einstein condensation is formulated using the
one-body Density Matrix (OBDM) which is equally valid at low and high
densities. The OBDM is calculated using diffusion Monte Carlo methods and it is
diagonalized to obtain the "natural" single particle orbitals and their
occupation, including the condensate fraction. At low Boson density, , where and is the hard core diameter, the condensate is
localized at the center of the trap. As increases, the condensate moves
to the edges of the trap. At high density it is localized at the edges of the
trap. At the Gross-Pitaevskii theory of the condensate
describes the whole system within 1%. At corrections are
3% to the GP energy but 30% to the Bogoliubov prediction of the condensate
depletion. At , mean field theory fails. At , the Bosons behave more like a liquid He droplet than a trapped Boson
gas.Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures, submitted Phys. Rev.
Chloride Anion Controlled Molecular “Switching”. Binding of 2,5,7-Trinitro-9-dicyanomethylenefluorene-C60 by Tetrathiafulvalene Calix[4]pyrrole and Photophysical Generation of Two Different Charge-Separated States
The binding of the snake-like trinitrodicyanomethylenefluorene-C60 derivative (TNDCF-C60) to the dynamic receptor, tetrathiafulvalene calix[4]pyrrole (TTF-calix[4]pyrrole), may be controlled via the use of a chloride anion as an external trigger. Whereas, in the absence of a chloride anion, the TNDCF ?tail? of the trinitrodicyanomethylenefluorene-C60 substrate binds to the TTF?calix[4]pyrrole in a 2:1 (substrate/receptor) stoichiometry in CH2Cl2 solution, addition of a chloride anion (yellow) leads the TNDCF tail to be displaced in favor of a bound C60 ?head?, a process that leads to the formation of a complex with overall 1:2:2 substrate/receptor/chloride anion stoichiometry. These chemical switching events are reflected in easy-to-visualize color changes, as well as in the production of two different kinds of charge-separated states following selective femtosecond photoexcitation

Semi-industrial development of nutritious and healthy seafood dishes from sustainable species
This study aimed to devise innovative, tailor-made, appealing, tasty and semi-industrialized dishes, using sustainable and under-utilized seafood species (bib, common dab, common carp, blue mussel and blue whiting), that can meet the specific nutritional and functional needs of children (8-10-years), pregnant women (20-40-years) and seniors (≥60-years). Hence, contests were organised among cooking schools from 6 European countries and the best recipes/dishes were reformulated, semi-industrially produced and chemically and microbiologically evaluated. The dishes intended for: (i) children and pregnant women had EPA + DHA and I levels that reached the target quantities, supporting the claim as “high in I”; and (ii) seniors were “high in protein” (24.8%-Soup_S and 34.0%-Balls_S of the energy was provided by proteins), “high in vitamin B12”, and had Na contents (≤0.4%) below the defined limit. All dishes reached the vitamin D target value. Sausages_C, Roulade_P, Fillet_P and Balls_S had a well-balanced protein/fat ratio. Roulade_P presented the highest n-3 PUFA/n-6 PUFA ratio (3.3), while Sausages_C the lowest SFA/UNS ratio (0.2). Dishes were considered safe based on different parameters (e.g. Hg-T, PBDEs, Escherichia coli). All represent dietary sources contributing to meet the reference intakes of target nutrients (33->100%), providing valuable options to overcome nutritional and functional imbalances of the three groups. This project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under Grant Agreement no. 773400 (SEAFOODTOMORROW).
