Engineering adiabaticity at an avoided crossing with optimal control
We investigate ways to optimize adiabaticity and diabaticity in the
Landau-Zener model with non-uniform sweeps. We show how diabaticity can be
engineered with a pulse consisting of a linear sweep augmented by an
oscillating term. We show that the oscillation leads to jumps in populations
whose value can be accurately modeled using a model of multiple,
photon-assisted Landau-Zener transitions, which generalizes work by Wubs et al.
[New J. Phys. 7, 218 (2005)]. We extend the study on diabaticity using methods
derived from optimal control. We also show how to preserve adiabaticity with
optimal pulses at limited time, finding a non-uniform quantum speed limit
Memetic Multilevel Hypergraph Partitioning
Hypergraph partitioning has a wide range of important applications such as
VLSI design or scientific computing. With focus on solution quality, we develop
the first multilevel memetic algorithm to tackle the problem. Key components of
our contribution are new effective multilevel recombination and mutation
operations that provide a large amount of diversity. We perform a wide range of
experiments on a benchmark set containing instances from application areas such
VLSI, SAT solving, social networks, and scientific computing. Compared to the
state-of-the-art hypergraph partitioning tools hMetis, PaToH, and KaHyPar, our
new algorithm computes the best result on almost all instances
SU(3) Quantum Interferometry with single-photon input pulses
We develop a framework for solving the action of a three-channel passive
optical interferometer on single-photon pulse inputs to each channel using
SU(3) group-theoretic methods, which can be readily generalized to higher-order
photon-coincidence experiments. We show that features of the coincidence plots
vs relative time delays of photons yield information about permanents,
immanants, and determinants of the interferometer SU(3) matrix

Hubble Space Telescope H-Band Imaging Survey of Massive Gas-Rich Mergers
We report the results from a deep HST NICMOS H-band imaging survey of a
carefully selected sample of 33 luminous, late-stage galactic mergers at z <
0.3. Signs of a recent galactic interaction are seen in all of the objects in
the HST sample, including all 7 IR-excess Palomar-Green (PG) QSOs in the
sample. Unsuspected double nuclei are detected in 5 ULIRGs. A detailed
two-dimensional analysis of the surface brightness distributions in these
objects indicates that the great majority (81%) of the single-nucleus systems
show a prominent early-type morphology. However, low-surface-brightness
exponential disks are detected on large scale in at least 4 of these sources.
The hosts of 'warm' AGN-like systems are of early type and have less pronounced
merger-induced morphological anomalies than the hosts of cool systems with
LINER or HII region-like nuclear optical spectral types. The host sizes and
luminosities of the 7 PG~QSOs in our sample are statistically indistinguishable
from those of the ULIRG hosts. In comparison, highly luminous quasars, such as
those studied by Dunlop et al. (2003), have hosts which are larger and more
luminous. The hosts of ULIRGs and PG QSOs lie close to the locations of
intermediate-size (about 1 -- 2 L*) spheroids in the photometric projection of
the fundamental plane of ellipticals, although there is a tendency in our
sample for the ULIRGs with small hosts to be brighter than normal spheroids.
Excess emission from a young stellar population in the ULIRG/QSO hosts may be
at the origin of this difference. Our results provide support for a possible
merger-driven evolutionary connection between cool ULIRGs, warm ULIRGs, and
PG~QSOs although this sequence may break down at low luminosity. (abridged)Comment: Paper to be published in the Astrophysical Journal; revised based on

Extreme Galactic-Winds and Starburst in IR Mergers and IR QSOs
We report -as a part of a long-term study of mergers and IR QSOs- detailed
spectroscopic evidences for outflow (OF) and/or Wolf Rayet features in: (i) low
velocity OF in the ongoing mergers NGC 4038/39 and IRAS 23128-5919; (ii)
extreme velocity OF (EVOF) in the QSOs IRAS 01003-2238 and IRAS 13218+0552;
(iii) OF and EVOF in a complete sample of ultra-luminous IR galaxies/QSOs ("The
IRAS 1 Jy MKO-KPNO Survey", of 118 objects). We found EVOF in IRAS 11119+3257,
14394+5332, 15130+1958 and 15462-0450. The OF components detected in these
objects were mainly associated to starburst processes: i.e., to galactic-winds
generated in multiple type II SN explosions and massive stars. The EVOF were
detected in objects with strong starburst plus obscured IR QSOs; which suggest
that interaction of both processes could generate EVOF. In addition, we analyze
the presence of Wolf Rayet features in the large sample of Bright PG-QSOs
(Boroson and Green 1992), and nearby mergers and galactic-wind galaxies. We
found clear WR features in the Fe II QSOs (type I): PG 1244+026, 1444+407,
1448+273, 1535+547; and in the IR merger Arp 220. HST archive images of IR+BAL
QSOs show in practically all of these objects "arc or shell" features probably
associated to galactic-winds (i.e., to multiple type II SN explosions) and/or
merger processes. Finally, we discuss the presence of extreme starburst and
galactic wind as a possible evolutive link between IR merger and IR QSOs; where
the relation between mergers and extreme starburst (with powerful
galactic-winds) plays in important role, in the evolution of galaxies.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figure
Ultrafast spectroscopy of propagating coherent acoustic phonons in GaN/InGaN heterostructures
We show that large amplitude, coherent acoustic phonon wavepackets can be
generated and detected in InGaN/GaN epilayers and heterostructures
in femtosecond pump-probe differential reflectivity experiments. The amplitude
of the coherent phonon increases with increasing Indium fraction and unlike
other coherent phonon oscillations, both \textit{amplitude} and \textit{period}
are strong functions of the laser probe energy. The amplitude of the
oscillation is substantially and almost instantaneously reduced when the
wavepacket reaches a GaN-sapphire interface below the surface indicating that
the phonon wavepackets are useful for imaging below the surface. A theoretical
model is proposed which fits the experiments well and helps to deduce the
strength of the phonon wavepackets. Our model shows that localized coherent
phonon wavepackets are generated by the femtosecond pump laser in the epilayer
near the surface. The wavepackets then propagate through a GaN layer changing
the local index of refraction, primarily through the Franz-Keldysh effect, and
as a result, modulate the reflectivity of the probe beam. Our model correctly
predicts the experimental dependence on probe-wavelength as well as epilayer
thickness.Comment: 11 pages, 14 figure
Generalized W-Class State and its Monogamy Relation
We generalize the W class of states from qubits to qudits and prove
that their entanglement is fully characterized by their partial entanglements
even for the case of the mixture that consists of a W-class state and a product
state .Comment: 12 pages, 1 figur
