    Angular momentum transport in protostellar discs

    Angular momentum transport in protostellar discs can take place either radially, through turbulence induced by the magnetorotational instability (MRI), or vertically, through the torque exerted by a large-scale magnetic field that threads the disc. Using semi-analytic and numerical results, we construct a model of steady-state discs that includes vertical transport by a centrifugally driven wind as well as MRI-induced turbulence. We present approximate criteria for the occurrence of either one of these mechanisms in an ambipolar diffusion-dominated disc. We derive ``strong field'' solutions in which the angular momentum transport is purely vertical and ``weak field'' solutions that are the stratified-disc analogues of the previously studied MRI channel modes; the latter are transformed into accretion solutions with predominantly radial angular-momentum transport when we implement a turbulent-stress prescription based on published results of numerical simulations. We also analyze ``intermediate field strength'' solutions in which both modes of transport operate at the same radial location; we conclude, however, that significant spatial overlap of these two mechanisms is unlikely to occur in practice. To further advance this study, we have developed a general scheme that incorporates also the Hall and Ohm conductivity regimes in discs with a realistic ionization structure.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 1 table; accepted for publication in MNRA

    Cell migration on material-driven fibronectin microenvironments

    Cell migration is a fundamental process involved in a wide range of biological phenomena. However, how the underlying mechanisms that control migration are orchestrated is not fully understood. In this work, we explore the migratory characteristics of human fibroblasts using different organisations of fibronectin (FN) triggered by two chemically similar surfaces, poly(ethyl acrylate) (PEA) and poly(methyl acrylate) (PMA); cell migration is mediated via an intermediate layer of fibronectin (FN). FN is organised into nanonetworks upon simple adsorption on PEA whereas a globular conformation is observed on PMA. We studied cell speed over the course of 24 h and the morphology of focal adhesions in terms of area and length. Additionally, we analysed the amount of cell-secreted FN as well as FN remodelling. Velocity of human fibroblasts was found to exhibit a biphasic behaviour on PEA, whereas it remained fairly constant on PMA. FA analysis revealed more mature focal adhesions on PEA over time contrary to smaller FAs found on PMA. Finally, human fibroblasts seemed to remodel adsorbed FN more on PMA than on PEA. Overall, these results indicate that the cell–protein–material interface affects cell migratory behaviour. Analysis of FAs together with FN secretion and remodelling were associated with differences in cell velocity providing insights into the factors that can modulate cell motility

    Neural signatures of cognitive flexibility and reward sensitivity following nicotinic receptor stimulation in dependent smokers : a randomized trial

    IMPORTANCE Withdrawal from nicotine is an important contributor to smoking relapse. Understanding how reward-based decision making is affected by abstinence and by pharmacotherapies such as nicotine replacement therapy and varenicline tartrate may aid cessation treatment. OBJECTIVE To independently assess the effects of nicotine dependence and stimulation of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor on the ability to interpret valence information (reward sensitivity) and subsequently alter behavior as reward contingencies change (cognitive flexibility) in a probabilistic reversal learning task. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS Nicotine-dependent smokers and nonsmokers completed a probabilistic reversal learning task during acquisition of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in a 2-drug, double-blind placebo-controlled crossover design conducted from January 21, 2009, to September 29, 2011. Smokers were abstinent from cigarette smoking for 12 hours for all sessions. In a fully Latin square fashion, participants in both groups underwent MRI twice while receiving varenicline and twice while receiving a placebo pill, wearing either a nicotine or a placebo patch. Imaging analysis was performed from June 15, 2015, to August 10, 2016. MAIN OUTCOME AND MEASURES A well-established computational model captured effects of smoking status and administration of nicotine and varenicline on probabilistic reversal learning choice behavior. Neural effects of smoking status, nicotine, and varenicline were tested for on MRI contrasts that captured reward sensitivity and cognitive flexibility. RESULTS The study included 24 nicotine-dependent smokers (12 women and 12 men; mean [SD] age, 35.8 [9.9] years) and 20 nonsmokers (10 women and 10 men; mean [SD] age, 30.4 [7.2] years). Computational modeling indicated that abstinent smokers were biased toward response shifting and that their decisions were less sensitive to the available evidence, suggesting increased impulsivity during withdrawal. These behavioral impairments were mitigated with nicotine and varenicline. Similarly, decreased mesocorticolimbic activity associated with cognitive flexibility in abstinent smokers was restored to the level of nonsmokers following stimulation of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (familywise error-corrected P<.05). Conversely, neural signatures of decreased reward sensitivity in smokers (vs nonsmokers; familywise error-corrected P<.05) in the dorsal striatum and anterior cingulate cortex were not mitigated by nicotine or varenicline. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE There was a double dissociation between the effects of chronic nicotine dependence on neural representations of reward sensitivity and acute effects of stimulation of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors on behavioral and neural signatures of cognitive flexibility in smokers. These chronic and acute pharmacologic effects were observed in overlapping mesocorticolimbic regions, suggesting that available pharmacotherapies may alleviate deficits in the same circuitry for certain mental computations but not for others

    Bacteria-laden microgels as autonomous three-dimensional environments for stem cell engineering

    A one-step microfluidic system is developed in this study which enables the encapsulation of stem cells and genetically engineered non-pathogenic bacteria into a so-called three-dimensional (3D) pearl lace–like microgel of alginate with high level of monodispersity and cell viability. The alginate-based microgel constitutes living materials that control stem cell differentiation in either an autonomous or heteronomous manner. The bacteria (Lactococcus lactis) encapsulated within the construct surface display adhesion fragments (III7-10 fragment of human fibronectin) for integrin binding while secreting growth factors (recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2) to induce osteogenic differentiation of human bone marrow–derived mesenchymal stem cells. We concentrate on interlinked pearl lace microgels that enabled us to prototype a low-cost 3D bioprinting platform with highly tunable properties

    Interpretations of J/ψJ/\psi suppression

    We review the two main interpretations of J/ψJ/\psi suppression proposed in the literature. The phase transition (or deconfining) scenario assumes that below some critical value of the local energy density (or of some other geometrical quantity which depends both on the colliding systems and on the centrality of the collision), there is only nuclear absorption. Above this critical value the absorptive cross-section is taken to be infinite, i.e. no J/ψJ/\psi can survive in this hot region. In the hadronic scenario the J/ψJ/\psi dissociates due both to nuclear absorption and to its interactions with co-moving hadrons produced in the collision. No discontinuity exists in physical observables.     Ambipolar Diffusion in the Magnetorotational Instability

    The effects of ambipolar diffusion on the linear stability of weakly ionised accretion discs are examined. Earlier work on this topic has focused on axial magnetic fields and perturbation wavenumbers. We consider here more general field and wavenumber geometries, and find that qualitatively new results are obtained. Provided a radial wavenumber and azimuthal field are present along with their axial counterparts, ambipolar diffusion will always be destabilising, with unstable local modes appearing at well-defined wavenumber bands. The wavenumber corresponding to the maximum growth rate need not, in general, lie along the vertical axis. Growth rates become small relative to the local angular velocity when the ion-neutral collision time exceeds the orbital time. In common with Hall electromotive forces, ambipolar diffusion destabilises both positive and negative angular velocity gradients. In at least some cases, therefore, uniformly rotating molecular cloud cores may reflect the marginally stable state of the ambipolar magnetorotational instability.Comment: Submitted to MN, 6 pages, 3 figs, MN style file v2.

    Praise is bestowed on the attitude of lectures in defense of the public universities and emphasis is given to the role these universities play in shaping our cultural identities as a people. We analyse the pressure by the IMF to make public universities charge fees, and the danger that this may happen vis a vis the statements by the Minister of Education. We summarize the pressure exerted by the World Commerce Organization on industrial and commercial sectors, and for the privatization of teaching seen as a commodity. We describe UNESCO's concern about this pressure. We analyse the growth of the private universities in Brazilian higher education, with its ever commercial character, and the difference in the mentalities cultivated there relative to that in the public universities.Elogiamos a atitude dos professores na defesa das universidades públicas e damos ênfase ao papel dessas universidades em nossa identidade cultural como povo. Analisamos a pressão do FMI para que o ensino nas universidades públicas venha a ser pago e o perigo de que isto venha a acontecer em vista de declarações do próprio ministro da Educação. Resumimos as pressões exercidas pela OMC em setores industriais e comerciais e para a privatização do ensino, considerado como mercadoria. Descrevemos a preocupação da UNESCO com essa pressão. Analisamos a penetração cada vez maior das universidades privadas no ensino superior brasileiro, com seu caráter quase sempre comercial, e a diferença de mentalidade cultivada nessas universidades relativamente às universidades públicas
