    Non-Peer ReviewedLand application of livestock manure is usually considered for N needs of crops (Gburek et al. 2000). Although the N:P ratio in animal manures and effluent exhibit wide variations due to different sources and stockpiling, the manure N:P ratio is often smaller than the N:P uptake ratio of most crops (Gburek et al. 2000). It is reported that the average N:P ratio in manure from various cattle feedlots was around 2.7 (Watts et al., 1994; Eghball et al., 1997), while N:P grain uptake ratios in winter wheat, corn, and grain sorghum were 4.5, 5.9, and 4.5 respectively (Gilbertson et al., 1979). Thus, accumulation of P in soils may increase the risk of P escape from the soil system before it is used by subsequent crops (Sharpley et al., 1994; Lennox et al., 1997; Schoenau et al., 1999; Sims et al. 2000). A single application of swine manure at either low and high rates in Saskatchewan was found to have no significant impacts on increasing labile P forms in a Black Chernozemic soil (Qian and Scheonau. 2000a). However, after several years of application of animal manures, especially cattle manure, concerns over P loading have been brought to the attention of the livestock industry in Western Canada. Numerous reports show that long-term use of cattle manures and fertilizer P sources alter the amounts and distribution of P in the various pools of soil P, especially at higher P rates (Dormaar and Sommerfeldt, 1986; McKenzie et al., 1992a; Dormaar and Chang, 1995; Zheng et al, 2001). However, few studues have examined the effects of liquid swine manure addition on P distribution in prairie soils.     AbstractIn a recent paper, Chiu et al. (2014) utilized mathematical modeling and differential calculus to determine the common production cycle time that minimizes total production, inventory, and delivery costs for a multi-item economic production quantity (EPQ) model with scrap, rework, and multi-delivery. The present study proposes an algebraic approach substituting the use of differential calculus on the system cost function for deriving the optimal common cycle time in the aforementioned multi-item EPQ model. This simplified approach may enable managing practitioners to resolve real multi-item EPQ models more effectively

    Solar Mikheyev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein Effect with Three Generations of Neutrinos

    Under the assumption that the density variation of the electrons can be approximated by an exponential function, the solar Mikheyev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein effect is treated for three generations of neutrinos. The generalized hypergeometric functions that result from the exact solution of this problem are studied in detail, and a method for their numerical evaluation is presented.     Spontaneous Breaking of Flavor Symmetry and Naturalness of Nearly Degenerate Neutrino Masses and Bi-maximal Mixing

    The gauge model with SO(3)FSO(3)_{F} flavor symmetry and three Higgs triplets is studied. We show how the intriguing nearly degenerate neutrino mass and bi-maximal mixing scenario comes out naturally after spontaneous breaking of the symmetry. The hierarchy between the neutrino mass-squared differences, which is needed for reconciling both solar and atmospheric neutrino data, is naturally resulted from an approximate permutation symmetry.     Hawking Radiation as Quantum Tunneling in Rindler Coordinate

    We substantiate the Hawking radiation as quantum tunneling of fields or particles crossing the horizon by using the Rindler coordinate. The thermal spectrum detected by an accelerated particle is interpreted as quantum tunneling in the Rindler spacetime. Representing the spacetime near the horizon locally as a Rindler spacetime, we find the emission rate by tunneling, which is expressed as a contour integral and gives the correct Boltzmann factor. We apply the method to non-extremal black holes such as a Schwarzschild black hole, a non-extremal Reissner-Nordstr\"{o}m black hole, a charged Kerr black hole, de Sitter space, and a Schwarzschild-anti de Sitter black hole.Comment: LaTex 19 pages, no figure; references added and replaced by the version accepted in JHE

    Pigment epithelium-derived factor in the monkey retinal pigment epithelium and interphotoreceptor matrix: apical secretion and distribution

    Pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) is an extracellular protein derived from the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), a tissue formed by polarized cells that release growth and trophic factors in a directional fashion. We have investigated the distribution and directional release of PEDF protein by the monkey RPE. We established primary cultures of monkey RPE cells that expressed the PEDF gene, and that synthesized and secreted the PEDF protein. Northern analysis of RPE cultures and monkey ocular tissues showed that PEDF transcripts were highly expressed in RPE as compared with several other monkey ocular tissues, being even more abundant in cultured cells than they were in the native RPE. The differentiated RPE cells in culture secreted protein that shared the immunological, biochemical and biological characteristics of PEDF. The overall PEDF levels in the RPE conditioned media reached 6.5 mg ml- after 8 days in culture (i.e. 1.1 pg of PEDF per RPE cell). RPE cells were cultivated on permeable supports as monolayers forming a barrier between apical and basal compartments. Apical and basal culture media were sampled at three or four-day intervals for 18 cycles, and the PEDF content was quantified. Most of the PEDF protein was significantly higher in the apical than in the basal medium (>4 times) at the initial recovery intervals, to be detected only in the apical medium at the latter intervals. In the native monkey eye, the concentration of soluble PEDF in the interphotoreceptor matrix (144 nM) was 7-fold and 25-fold greater than in vitreous and aqueous, respectively. PEDF was abundant in the interphotoreceptor matrix surrounding rod and cone outer segments, and was detectable at lower levels in the RPE as visualized by confocal microscopy. We concluded that PEDF synthesized by the RPE is secreted preferentially from the apical surface and is distributed apically to the RPE bordering the outer segments of photoreceptors. PEDF can be a useful marker for RPE polarization and differentiation. The polarization of RPE may be an important mechanism to control PEDF secretion and our results offer interesting possibilities on regulation of PEDF

    Topological Weyl semimetals in the chiral antiferromagnetic materials Mn3Ge and Mn3Sn

    Recent experiments revealed that Mn3Sn and Mn3Ge exhibit a strong anomalous Hall effect at room temperature, provoking us to explore their electronic structures for topological properties. By ab initio band structure calculations, we have observed the existence of multiple Weyl points in the bulk and corresponding Fermi arcs on the surface, predicting antiferromagnetic Weyl semimetals in Mn3Ge and Mn3Sn. Here the chiral antiferromagnetism in the Kagome-type lattice structure is essential to determine the positions and numbers of Weyl points. Our work further reveals a new guiding principle to search for magnetic Weyl semimetals among materials that exhibit a strong anomalous Hall effect

    Ractopamine-induced changes in sarcoplasmic proteome profile of post-rigor pork semimembranosus muscle

    Ractopamine is a beta-adrenergic agonist that increases leanness and carcass weight in finishing pigs. Our previous study observed that dietary ractopamine increased the abundance of several glycolytic enzymes in the sarcoplasmic proteome of post-rigor pork longissimus thoracis muscle. Pork semimembranosus is an economically important muscle and demonstrates differences in biochemistry compared with longissimus thoracis. Nonetheless, the effects of ractopamine on sarcoplasmic proteome of semimembranosus have not been evaluated yet. Therefore, this study examined the influence of ractopamine on sarcoplasmic proteome of post-rigor pork semimembranosus. Analyses of sarcoplasmic proteome of semimembranosus muscles from control (CON; diet without ractopamine) and ractopamine-fed (RAC; 7.4 mg/kg for 14 days followed by 10.0 mg/kg for 14 days) barrows revealed that haemoglobin subunit beta, alpha-crystallin B, and titin fragments were over-abundant in CON. In contrast, myosin light chain 1/3 and tripartite motif-containing protein 72 were over-abundant in RAC. The low abundance of haemoglobin subunit beta and alpha crystallin B in RAC could be attributed to fibre type shift (from oxidative to glycolytic) in response to ractopamine. The over-abundance of MLC 1/3 and tripartite motif-containing protein 72 in RAC could be due to the increased myofibrillar protein synthesis and muscle mass in ractopamine-fed pigs. Dietary ractopamine decreased the abundance of sarcoplasmic proteins involved in oxygen transport and chaperone activity, but increased the abundance of proteins involved in muscle contraction and plasma membrane repair in pork semimembranosus muscle.Keywords: Pork, ractopamine, sarcoplasmic proteome, semimembranosu
