Some issues in the 'archaeology' of software evolution

    Get PDF
During a software project's lifetime, the software goes through many changes, as components are added, removed and modified to fix bugs and add new features. This paper is intended as a lightweight introduction to some of the issues arising from an `archaeological' investigation of software evolution. We use our own work to look at some of the challenges faced, techniques used, findings obtained, and lessons learnt when measuring and visualising the historical changes that happen during the evolution of software

Stress Intensity Factors for Circumferential Semi-Elliptical Cracks in Cylinders Subjected to Forced Convection Heat Transfer

    Get PDF
This paper analyzes the circumferential semi-elliptical crack on the inner surface of a thick-walled cylinder while keeping the thermal loading in steady state. Forced convection heat transfer in the inner surface and free convection in the outer surface are applied to the cylinder, which was constructed from isotropic and homogeneous materials. To this end, the thermal stress intensity factors are determined using the weight function method. To validate the results, 3-D finite element method is applied as well as API standard code. Due to the existence of two planes of symmetry, only a quarter model of the cylinder was used and along the crack front, the modelling is carried out over singular isoparametric elements. The results for stress intensity factor are obtained at different aspect ratios and relative depths of the crack. The stress intensity factors calculated via built-in J-integral solver based on the domain integral technique in the ABAQUS software. The results obtained via this method were in good agreement with the proposed weight function, demonstrating the latter’s high adequacy and efficiency

A novel two – factor high order fuzzy time series with applications to temperature and futures exchange forecasting

    Get PDF
High order fuzzy time series forecasting methods are more suitable than first order fuzzy time series forecasting methods in dealing with linguistic values. However, existing high order methods lack persuasiveness in dealing objectively with multiple – factor fuzzy time series, recurrent number of fuzzy relationships, and assigning weights to elements of fuzzy forecasting rules. In this paper, a novel two – factor high – order fuzzy time series forecasting method based on fuzzy C-means clustering and particle swarm optimization is proposed to resolve these drawbacks. Fuzzy C-means clustering is utilized in the fuzzification phase to objectively partition the universe of discourse and enable processing of multiple factors. Then, particle swarm optimization is utilized to assign optimal weights to elements of fuzzy forecasting rules. Daily average temperatures of Taipei and Taiwan Futures Exchange (TAIFEX) are used as benchmark data. Average forecasting error performance of 0.85% was obtained for Taipei Temperature forecast. Mean squared error performance of 199.57 was obtained for Taiwan Futures Exchange forecast. The forecasting results showed that the proposed method has higher forecasting performance than other existing methods. Keywords: fuzzy time series, fuzzy c-mean clustering, particle swarm optimization, forecasting, fuzzy relationship

LMI-Based Fuzzy Optimal Variance Control of Airfoil Model Subject to Input Constraints

    Get PDF
This paper presents a study of fuzzy optimal variance control problem for dynamical systems subject to actuator amplitude and rate constraints. Using Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy modeling and dynamic Parallel Distributed Compensation technique, the stability and the constraints can be cast as a multi-objective optimization problem in the form of Linear Matrix Inequalities. By utilizing the formulations and solutions for the input and output variance constraint problems, we develop a fuzzy full-state feedback controller. The stability and performance of the proposed controller is demonstrated through its application to the airfoil flutter suppression

THE URGENCY OF UNDERSTANDING DIGITAL LITERACY IN THE FLOW OF DIGITALIZATION OF COMMUNICATION AND INFORMATION

Writing articles using qualitative methods of content analysis. Data collection techniques were carried out through literature research in the form of books, scientific journals, theses, and theses. While the observation process is carried out on digital media and mass media, to obtain data that supports the writing of articles. This article concludes that proficiency in digital literacy is an undoubted necessity amidst the serious use of the internet by the Indonesian people, where currently there are 197 million internet users in Indonesia. This is an obligation for the government and policymakers to ensure that every nation's child can use social media and the internet in the digital era properly and wisely. Do not let us be negligent in using the digital space, thus setting aside moral values and decency and ultimately causing material and non-material harm from an economic standpoint. We believe through skills in using the internet in this digital era can change and bring progress to the nation, state and society. In this new era, there is no other decision except that Indonesia's people must have sufficient capabilities, both in number and level of skills or abilities regarding digital literacy

Evaluating different scenarios for optimizing energy consumption to achieve sustainable green building in Malaysia

    Get PDF
One of the most users of energy in the construction industry is residential buildings that use the high value of energy. Because of the high effect of construction activities on environment, serious attention should be given to sustainability concept in construction activities. There are climate factors such as temperature, humidity and pressure that have a considerable effect on the sustainability of green buildings based on energy consumption. The main goal of this paper is to achieve a sustainable green building by optimizing the energy consumption based on two significant factors which are temperature and humidity. To achieve this goal, the design of experiments (DOE) and building simulation are applied. A two-storey house in Malaysia was selected as the case study. The final result shows that to achieve the optimum value of cooling load to have a sustained design of green residential buildings all the significant factors should be placed on a low level which it means that temperature and humidity should be equal to 20 degrees Celsius and 60% respectively

Revisiting the role of the resource curse in shaping institutions and growth

    Get PDF
This paper examines the effect of natural resource dependence on growth in a cross-country setting during 1970 to 2010, first accounting for the effect of resource export dependence on institutional development. We employ several political and governance indicators, numerous econometric techniques on two separate panels, including one post-cold war. Our findings suggest there is a resource curse adversely effecting growth via institutional deterioration in the longer term (1970-2010), but recently (1995-2012) there is a reversal of this adverse effect on some institutions. Moreover, certain institutions matter more for growth, including governance and constraints on the executive relative to democracy

Analisis Perlindungan Hukum Data Pribadi Nasabah Pada Transaksi Internet Banking Di Sulawesi Utara

Internet banking is one of the services created by general banking using internet technology, but it still requires legal certainty to protect the personal data of its customers. The research was then aimed at exploring more deeply the legal protection of personal data at one of the banks in North Sulawesi in a normative way. customers use these banking services. By searching the legal literature, laws and regulations from related agencies, the primary sources are complemented by in-depth interviews with informants at bank locations. The end of the research concluded that the bank had made every effort to comply with Indonesian legal provisions by making transactions via internet banking supported by strict supervision from the competent authorities
