    Changing the operation of small geometrically complex EBG-based antennas with micron-sized particles that respond to magneto-static fields

    As the usage of wireless technology grows, there are evermore demands on the antennas that support these platforms. This need has led to the design of unique antennas with improved bandwidth, agile frequency capabilities, compact size and greater efficiencies. In part though, the trade-off for such capabilities is antenna complexity. This paper presents a new technique for simplifying the method of changing the operation of a printed antenna using micron-sized silver coated particles that respond to magneto-static fields. More specifically, a structure consisting of a low-loss dielectric material with a cylindrical cavity containing micro-sized particles is developed. The overall size of the dielectric material is 1.5 mm Ă— 1.5 mm Ă— 0.5 mm and the cavity has a diameter of 0.9 mm. Furthermore, the top and bottom of the cavity with the micron-sized particles is capped with copper foil. Then, to manipulate the enclosed particles, a static magnet is placed near the structure. The enclosed particles columnize and orientate in the direction of the field-lines, connecting the top and bottom copper foil plates. To disconnect the plates then, the field is simply removed and the columns collapse. Macroscopically, the structure has the behavior of a switch. The structures presented in this work are denoted as Magneto-static Field Responsive Structures (MRSs). The MRSs have an additional benefit of not requiring a direct connection to a biasing circuit. This is very useful because there are many antenna designs that make it difficult to embed biasing circuitry to reconfigure printed antennas using MEMS and PIN diodes, for example. Finally, a new frequency reconfigurable Electromagnetic Band Gap (EBG) antenna is presented. This design is unique because the complex layout does not allow for traditional biasing circuitry and the operation is changed using the new MRSs presented in this paper

    Heavy Metal, Organochlorine Pesticide and Polychlorinated Biphenyl Contamination in Arctic Ground Squirrels (Spermophilus Parryi) in Northern Alaska

    Heavy metal and organochlorine (OC) concentrations including organochlorine pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyl congeners (PCBs), were determined in arctic ground squirrels (Spermophilus parryi) from three sites in the Brooks Range of northern Alaska in 1991-93. Heavy metals were present in most squirrel livers collected, with concentrations of trace elements (As, Cd, Hg, Ni, and Pb) averaging below 1 micro g/g wet weight. Hexachlorobenzene (HCB), p,p'-DDE, gamma hexachlorocyclohexane (gamma-HCH), trans-nonachlor, and PCBs 138, 153, and 170 were the most frequently detected OCs in fat and liver. Average concentrations of individual OC analytes were below 20 ng/g wet weight in liver and below 15 ng/g wet weight in fat. Rank correlations indicate that concentrations of heavy metals and of OCs accumulate in concert with one another (As, Cd, Cu, and Zn; PCBs 138, 170, and 180). Although heavy metal and OC concentrations are low relative to other areas and other arctic species, the occurrence of these compounds illustrates the global pervasiveness of persistent organic compounds and the potential for bioaccumulation in the terrestrial arctic food web.De 1991 à 1993, on a mesuré les concentrations en métaux lourds et en organochlorés, y compris des pesticides organochlorés et des congénères du diphényle polychloré (PCB), chez le spermophile arctique (Spermophilus parryi) à trois endroits situés dans la chaîne de Brooks de l'Alaska septentrional. On a trouvé des métaux lourds dans la plupart des foies de spermophiles prélevés, avec des concentrations en éléments traces (As, Cd, Hg, Ni et Pb) inférieures en moyenne à 1 µg/g de poids frais. L'hexachlorobenzène (HCB), le p,p'-DDE, l'hexachlorocyclohexane gamma (HCH-gamma), le trans-nonachlore et les PCB 138, 153 et 170 étaient les organochlorés les plus fréquemment détectés dans le tissu adipeux et le foie. Les concentrations moyennes des organochlorés analysés individuellement étaient inférieures à 20 ng/g de poids frais pour le foie et à 15 ng/g de poids frais pour le tissu adipeux. Les corrélations de rang révèlent que les concentrations en métaux lourds augmentent de concert avec celles en organochlorés (As, Cd, Cu et Zn; PCB 138, 170 et 180). Bien que les concentrations en métaux lourds et en organochlorés soient faibles par rapport à celles d'autres régions et à celles d'autres espèces arctiques, la présence de ces composés illustre l'omniprésence planétaire de composés organiques persistants et le potentiel pour une accumulation biologique dans le réseau trophique terrestre de l'Arctique

    Formation of delta ferrite in 9 wt.% Cr steel investigated by in-situ X-ray diffraction using synchrotron radiation

    In-situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements using high energy synchrotron radiation were performed to monitor in real time the formation of delta ferrite in a martensitic 9 wt pct chromium steel under simulated weld thermal cycles. Volume fractions of martensite, austenite, and delta ferrite were measured as a function of temperature at a 10 K/s heating rate to 1573 K (1300 °C) and subsequent cooling. At the peak temperature, the delta ferrite concentration rose to 19 pct, of which 17 pct transformed back to austenite on subsequent cooling.Max Kade Foundation, Inc.Austrian Academy of SciencesUnited States.     Dynamics of an Unbounded Interface Between Ordered Phases

    We investigate the evolution of a single unbounded interface between ordered phases in two-dimensional Ising ferromagnets that are endowed with single-spin-flip zero-temperature Glauber dynamics. We examine specifically the cases where the interface initially has either one or two corners. In both examples, the interface evolves to a limiting self-similar form. We apply the continuum time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation and a microscopic approach to calculate the interface shape. For the single corner system, we also discuss a correspondence between the interface and the Young tableau that represents the partition of the integers.Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures, 2-column revtex4 format.     Spectroscopy of high proper motion stars in the ground--based UV

    Based on high quality spectral data (spectral resolution R>60000) within the wavelength range of 3550-5000 AA we determined main parameters (effective temperature, surface gravity, microturbulent velocity, and chemical element abundances including heavy metals from Sr to Dy) for 14 metal-deficient G-K stars with large proper motions. The stars we studied have a wide range of metallicity: [Fe/H]=-0.3 \div -2.9. Abundances of Mg, Al, Sr and Ba were calculated with non-LTE line-formation effects accounted for. Abundances both of the radioactive element Th and r-process element Eu were determined using synthetic spectrum calculations. We selected stars that belong to different galactic populations according to the kinematical criterion and parameters determined by us. We found that the studied stars with large proper motions refer to different components of the Galaxy: thin, thick disks and halo. The chemical composition of the star BD+80 245 located far from the galactic plane agrees with its belonging to the accreted halo. For the giant HD115444 we obtained [Fe/H]=-2.91, underabundance of Mn, overabundance of heavy metals from Ba to Dy, and, especially high excess of the r-process element Europium: [Eu/Fe]=+1.26. Contrary to its chemical composition typical for halo stars, HD115444 belongs to the disc population according to its kinematic parameters.Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures, 5 tables, "UV Universe-2010 (2nd NUVA Symposium) conference

    Developing young people's sense of self and place through sport

    Previous research has recognized positive health implications, both physical and mental, as an outcome of participation in leisure pursuits. They provide opportunities for self-expression and stress reduction, as well as an environment in which people can socialize. Leisure activities, specifically sport activities, can play a significant role in young people's identity development. This paper explores the leisure activities in which young people in Adelaide, Australia participate. It examines the role of leisure activities in terms of young people's identity and feelings towards their hometown. This study consisted of semi-structured focus groups conducted with 24 senior high school students, followed by a survey resulting in 226 useable responses. Respondents were aged between 16 and 18 years of age. From the range of activities identified and explored, the results revealed sports activities to have the greatest impact on young people's lives. The results demonstrated that frequency of participation has a significant effect on young people's involvement levels and how they identify with the activity
