    Get PDF
The present study reports the assessment of activation energy for crystallization and crystallization reaction order (Avrami exponent n) for the amorphous-crystallization transformation process of Se85 − xTe15Inx (x 2, 6 and 10) amorphous alloys using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) technique under non-isothermal conditions at four different heating rates (5, 10, 15 and 20 °C/min) through Gao and Wang model. The introduction of In to the Se-Te system is found to bring a change in crystallization mechanisms and dimensions of growth. Risk Factors of Mortality in Severely-malnourished Children Hospitalized with Diarrhoea

    Get PDF
This case-control study was conducted in the Dhaka Hospital of ICDDR,B to identify the risk factors of mortality in severely-malnourished children hospitalized with diarrhoea. One hundred and three severely-malnourished children (weight-for-age <60% of median of the National Center for Health Statistics standard) who died during hospitalization were compared with another 103 severely-malnourished children who survived. These children were aged less than three years and admitted to the hospital during 1997. On admission, characteristics of the fatal cases and non-fatal controls were comparable, except for age. The median age of the cases and controls were six and eight months respectively (p=0.05). Patients with low pulse rate or imperceptible pulse had three times the odds of death compared to the control group (p<0.01). The presence of clinical septicaemia and clinical severe anaemia had 11.7 and 4.2 times the odds of death respectively (p<0.01). Patients with leukocytosis (>15,000/cm3) had 2.5 times the odds of death (p<0.01). Using logistic regression, clinical septicaemia [adjusted odds ratio (AOR)=8.8, confidence interval (CI) 3.7-21.1, p=0.01], hypothermia (AOR=3.5, CI 1.3-9.4, p<0.01), and bronchopneumonia (AOR=3.0, CI 1.2-7.3, p<0.01) were identified as the significant risk factors of mortality. Severely-malnourished children (n=129) with leukocytosis, imperceptible pulse, pneumonia, septicaemia, and hypothermia had a high risk of mortality. The identified risk factors can be used as a prognostic guide for patients with diarrhoea and severe malnutrition

MgGd0.15Fe1.85O4 ferrite with improved magnetic and electrical properties has been synthesized by solid state reaction technique and has been investigated for microstructures, magnetic and electric properties. The electric and magnetic properties of MgGd0.15Fe 1.85O4 ferrite have been studied as a function of frequency and temperature. The dc electrical resistivity of MgGd 0.15Fe1.85O4 ferrite was found to increase up to 90 times more as compared to MgFe2O4 ferrite. The value of saturation magnetization (Msat) has been increased from 30.70 emu/gm to 41.5 emug/m and remnant magnetization (Mr) of MgGd 0.15Fe1.85O4 ferrite was found to be increase up three times as compared to Mg ferrite. The values of saturation magnetization, remnant magnetization and initial permeability have been increased due to the replacement of Fe3+ ions by Gd3+ ions in Mg ferrite. High resistivity and improved magnetic properties (M sat, Mr) can be correlated with better compositional stoichiometry and the replacement of Fe3+ ions by Gd3+ ions. The mechanisms responsible to these results have been discussed in this paper. © 2011 American Institute of Physics.1349PART A11691170Kumar, G., Chand, J., Verma, S., Singh, M., (2009) J.Phys. D. Modeling of WEDM Parameters while Machining Mg-SiC Metal Matrix Composite

    Get PDF
In this paper an attempt has been made to study the effects of the process parameters of wire cut electrical discharge machining (WEDM) on Magnesium-Silicon Carbide MMC with 5% SiC in particulate form. For the analysis, six factors, namely pulse on time, pulse off time, spark gap voltage, peak current, dielectric flushing pressure and servo feed have been taken and a Taguchi L16 orthogonal array for two levels was used. Response surface methodology was also used to develop second-order models for material removal rate (MRR) and surface roughness (SR). From the analysis of variances, it has been observed that pulse on time and pulse off time were the most significant parameters among all those observed in predicting the MRR and SR, respectively

Model for Glass Transition in a Binary fluid from a Mode Coupling approach

    Get PDF
We consider the Mode Coupling Theory (MCT) of Glass transition for a Binary fluid. The Equations of Nonlinear Fluctuating Hydrodynamics are obtained with a proper choice of the slow variables corresponding to the conservation laws. The resulting model equations are solved in the long time limit to locate the dynamic transition. The transition point from our model is considerably higher than predicted in existing MCT models for binary systems. This is in agreement with what is seen in Computer Simulation of binary fluids. fluids.Comment: 9 Pages, 3 Figure

We report the near edge x-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) studies at the Mn L3,2 edge of pulsed laser deposited pristine thin films of multiferroic BiMn2 O5. These investigations are furthermore testified for BiMn2 O5 thin films irradiated through 200 MeV Ag15+ ions with fluence value 5× 1011 ions/ cm2. Though the pristine film is primarily antiferromagnetic in nature, irradiation induces ferrimagnetism in it. Element specific characterizations, NEXAFS and XMCD demonstrate the evolution of Mn2+ state piloting to magnetic signal associated with it. © 2010 American Institute of Physics.1079Nan, C.-W., Bichurin, M.I., Dong, S., Viehland, D., Srinivasan, G., Multiferroic magnetoelectric composites: Historical perspective, status, and future directions (2008) Journal of Applied Physics, 103 (3), p. 031101. , DOI 10.1063/1.2836410Ramesh, R., Spaldin, N.A., Multiferroics: Progress and prospects in thin films (2007) Nature Materials, 6 (1), pp. 21-29. , DOI 10.1038/nmat1805, PII NMAT1805Eerenstein, W., Mathur, N.D., Scott, J.F., Multiferroic and magnetoelectric materials (2006) Nature, 442 (7104), pp. 759-765. , DOI 10.1038/nature05023, PII NATURE05023Gajek, M., Bibes, M., Fusil, S., Bouzehouane, K., Fontcuberta, J., Barthelemy, A., Fert, A., Tunnel junctions with multiferroic barriers (2007) Nature Materials, 6 (4), pp. 296-302. , DOI 10.1038/nmat1860, PII NMAT1860Cheong, S.-W., Mostovoy, M., Multiferroics: A magnetic twist for ferroelectricity (2007) Nature Materials, 6 (1), pp. 13-20. , DOI 10.1038/nmat1804, PII NMAT1804Hur, N., Park, S., Sharma, P.A., Ahn, J.S., Guha, S., Cheong, S.-W., Electric polarization reversal and memory in a multiferroic material induced by magnetic fields (2004) Nature, 429 (6990), pp. 392-395. , DOI 10.1038/nature02572Chapon, L.C., Radaelli, P.G., Blake, G.R., Park, S., Cheong, S.-W., Ferroelectricity induced by acentric spin-density waves in YMn2O5 (2006) Physical Review Letters, 96 (9), pp. 1-4. , http://oai.aps.org/oai?verb=GetRecord&Identifier=oai:aps.org: PhysRevLett.96.097601&metadataPrefix=oai_apsmeta_2, DOI 10.1103/PhysRevLett.96.097601, 097601Muoz, A., Alonso, J.A., Casais, M.T., Martínez-Lope, M.J., Martínez, J.L., Fernández-Díaz, M.T., (2002) Phys. Tannakian duality for Anderson-Drinfeld motives and algebraic independence of Carlitz logarithms

We develop a theory of Tannakian Galois groups for t-motives and relate this to the theory of Frobenius semilinear difference equations. We show that the transcendence degree of the period matrix associated to a given t-motive is equal to the dimension of its Galois group. Using this result we prove that Carlitz logarithms of algebraic functions that are linearly independent over the rational function field are algebraically independent.Comment: 39 page

Recent Advancement in Solar-Driven Interfacial Steam Generation for Desalination : A State-of-the-Art Review

    Get PDF
Solar energy is one of the most efficient origins of energy for a wide range of environmentally beneficial purposes. Water desalination by steam generation with the help of solar energy is not only an economical and straightforward approach, but it also utilizes free energy sources to solve the problem of increasing freshwater scarcity. Solar water evaporation is an essential component of the low-energy method for generating fresh water, which is required for economic development and human health. Freshwater productivity determines how effectively the system captures incoming solar energy and transforms it into usable heat. Effective water distillation has recently gained a lot of attention. The photothermal conversion process is built on the performance of the evaporator. This review thoroughly examines the most recent developments in photothermal materials, structure design, and engineering strategies, including design principles for highly efficient photothermal conversion, thermal management, water transport phenomena, salt rejection behavior, and improved evaporation rate. The prospective applications of this technique in saline water desalination, waste water purification, and energy generation are highlighted. Furthermore, the most recent scientific advancements are utilized to demonstrate the potential, prospects, and challenges of solar-driven evaporation in energy conversion
