Changes in Optical Conductivity due to Readjustments in Electronic Density of States
Within the model of elastic impurity scattering, we study how changes in the
energy dependence of the electronic density of states (EDOS)
around the Fermi energy are reflected in the frequency-dependent
optical conductivity . While conserving the total number of
states in we compute the induced changes in as a
function of and in the corresponding optical scattering rate
. These quantities mirror some aspects of the EDOS
changes but the relationship is not direct. Conservation of optical oscillator
strength is found not to hold, and there is no sum rule on the optical
scattering rate although one does hold for the quasiparticle scattering.
Temperature as well as increases in impurity scattering lead to additional
changes in optical properties not seen in the constant EDOS case. These effects
have their origin in an averaging of the EDOS around the Fermi energy
on an energy scale set by the impurity scattering.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figure
Quantum magneto-oscillations in a two-dimensional Fermi liquid
Quantum magneto-oscillations provide a powerfull tool for quantifying
Fermi-liquid parameters of metals. In particular, the quasiparticle effective
mass and spin susceptibility are extracted from the experiment using the
Lifshitz-Kosevich formula, derived under the assumption that the properties of
the system in a non-zero magnetic field are determined uniquely by the
zero-field Fermi-liquid state. This assumption is valid in 3D but, generally
speaking, erroneous in 2D where the Lifshitz-Kosevich formula may be applied
only if the oscillations are strongly damped by thermal smearing and disorder.
In this work, the effects of interactions and disorder on the amplitude of
magneto-oscillations in 2D are studied. It is found that the effective mass
diverges logarithmically with decreasing temperature signaling a deviation from
the Fermi-liquid behavior. It is also shown that the quasiparticle lifetime due
to inelastic interactions does not enter the oscillation amplitude, although
these interactions do renormalize the effective mass. This result provides a
generalization of the Fowler-Prange theorem formulated originally for the
electron-phonon interaction.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
Global Phase Diagram of the Kondo Lattice: From Heavy Fermion Metals to Kondo Insulators
We discuss the general theoretical arguments advanced earlier for the T=0
global phase diagram of antiferromagnetic Kondo lattice systems, distinguishing
between the established and the conjectured. In addition to the well-known
phase of a paramagnetic metal with a "large" Fermi surface (P_L), there is also
an antiferromagnetic phase with a "small" Fermi surface (AF_S). We provide the
details of the derivation of a quantum non-linear sigma-model (QNLsM)
representation of the Kondo lattice Hamiltonian, which leads to an effective
field theory containing both low-energy fermions in the vicinity of a Fermi
surface and low-energy bosons near zero momentum. An asymptotically exact
analysis of this effective field theory is made possible through the
development of a renormalization group procedure for mixed fermion-boson
systems. Considerations on how to connect the AF_S and P_L phases lead to a
global phase diagram, which not only puts into perspective the theory of local
quantum criticality for antiferromagnetic heavy fermion metals, but also
provides the basis to understand the surprising recent experiments in
chemically-doped as well as pressurized YbRh2Si2. We point out that the AF_S
phase still occurs for the case of an equal number of spin-1/2 local moments
and conduction electrons. This observation raises the prospect for a global
phase diagram of heavy fermion systems in the Kondo-insulator regime. Finally,
we discuss the connection between the Kondo breakdown physics discussed here
for the Kondo lattice systems and the non-Fermi liquid behavior recently
studied from a holographic perspective.Comment: (v3) leftover typos corrected. (v2) Published version. 32 pages, 4

Low energy collective modes, Ginzburg-Landau theory, and pseudogap behavior in superconductors with long-range pairing interactions
We study the superconducting instability in systems with long but finite
ranged, attractive, pairing interactions. We show that such long-ranged
superconductors exhibit a new class of fluctuations in which the internal
structure of the Cooper pair wave function is soft, and thus lead to
"pseudogap" behavior in which the actual transition temperature is greatly
depressed from its mean field value. These fluctuations are {\it not} phase
fluctuations of the standard superconducting order parameter, and lead to a
highly unusual Ginzburg-Landau description. We suggest that the crossover
between the BCS limit of a short-ranged attraction and our problem is of
interest in the context of superconductivity in the underdoped cuprates.Comment: 20 pages with one embedded ps figure. Minor revisions to the text and

Observation and Assignment of Silent and Higher Order Vibrations in the Infrared Transmission of C60 Crystals
We report the measurement of infrared transmission of large C60 single
crystals. The spectra exhibit a very rich structure with over 180 vibrational
absorptions visible in the 100 - 4000 cm-1 range. Many silent modes are
observed to have become weakly IR-active. We also observe a large number of
higher order combination modes. The temperature (77K - 300K) and pressure (0 -
25KBar) dependencies of these modes were measured and are presented. Careful
analysis of the IR spectra in conjunction with Raman scattering data showing
second order modes and neutron scattering data, allow the selection of the 46
vibrational modes C60. We are able to fit *all* of the first and second order
data seen in the present IR spectra and the previously published Raman data
(~300 lines total), using these 46 modes and their group theory allowed second
order combinations.Comment: REVTEX v3.0 in LaTeX. 12 pages. 8 Figures by request. c60lon
Theory of Two-Dimensional Quantum Heisenberg Antiferromagnets with a Nearly Critical Ground State
We present the general theory of clean, two-dimensional, quantum Heisenberg
antiferromagnets which are close to the zero-temperature quantum transition
between ground states with and without long-range N\'{e}el order. For
N\'{e}el-ordered states, `nearly-critical' means that the ground state
spin-stiffness, , satisfies , where is the
nearest-neighbor exchange constant, while `nearly-critical' quantum-disordered
ground states have a energy-gap, , towards excitations with spin-1,
which satisfies . Under these circumstances, we show that the
wavevector/frequency-dependent uniform and staggered spin susceptibilities, and
the specific heat, are completely universal functions of just three
thermodynamic parameters. Explicit results for the universal scaling functions
are obtained by a expansion on the quantum non-linear sigma model,
and by Monte Carlo simulations. These calculations lead to a variety of
testable predictions for neutron scattering, NMR, and magnetization
measurements. Our results are in good agreement with a number of numerical
simulations and experiments on undoped and lightly-doped .Comment: 81 pages, REVTEX 3.0, smaller updated version, YCTP-xxx
Longitudinal double-spin asymmetry and cross section for inclusive neutral pion production at midrapidity in polarized proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV
We report a measurement of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry A_LL and
the differential cross section for inclusive Pi0 production at midrapidity in
polarized proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV. The cross section was
measured over a transverse momentum range of 1 < p_T < 17 GeV/c and found to be
in good agreement with a next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculation.
The longitudinal double-spin asymmetry was measured in the range of 3.7 < p_T <
11 GeV/c and excludes a maximal positive gluon polarization in the proton. The
mean transverse momentum fraction of Pi0's in their parent jets was found to be
around 0.7 for electromagnetically triggered events.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. D (RC
Azimuthal anisotropy and correlations in p+p, d+Au and Au+Au collisions at 200 GeV
We present the first measurement of directed flow () at RHIC. is
found to be consistent with zero at pseudorapidities from -1.2 to 1.2,
then rises to the level of a couple of percent over the range . The latter observation is similar to data from NA49 if the SPS rapidities
are shifted by the difference in beam rapidity between RHIC and SPS.
Back-to-back jets emitted out-of-plane are found to be suppressed more if
compared to those emitted in-plane, which is consistent with {\it jet
quenching}. Using the scalar product method, we systematically compared
azimuthal correlations from p+p, d+Au and Au+Au collisions. Flow and non-flow
from these three different collision systems are discussed.Comment: Quark Matter 2004 proceeding, 4 pages, 3 figure
Azimuthal anisotropy: the higher harmonics
We report the first observations of the fourth harmonic (v_4) in the
azimuthal distribution of particles at RHIC. The measurement was done taking
advantage of the large elliptic flow generated at RHIC. The integrated v_4 is
about a factor of 10 smaller than v_2. For the sixth (v_6) and eighth (v_8)
harmonics upper limits on the magnitudes are reported.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures, contribution to the Quark Matter 2004 proceeding
Partonic flow and -meson production in Au+Au collisions at = 200 GeV
We present first measurements of the -meson elliptic flow
() and high statistics distributions for different
centralities from = 200 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC. In
minimum bias collisions the of the meson is consistent with the
trend observed for mesons. The ratio of the yields of the to those of
the as a function of transverse momentum is consistent with a model
based on the recombination of thermal quarks up to GeV/,
but disagrees at higher momenta. The nuclear modification factor () of
follows the trend observed in the mesons rather than in
baryons, supporting baryon-meson scaling. Since -mesons are
made via coalescence of seemingly thermalized quarks in central Au+Au
collisions, the observations imply hot and dense matter with partonic
collectivity has been formed at RHIC.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, submit to PR
