    Marginal Abatement Costs of Carbon-Dioxide Emissions: A Meta-Analysis. ESRI WP248, June 2008

    In this paper we carry out a meta-analysis of recent studies into the costs of greenhouse gas mitigation policies that aim at the long-term stabilization of these gases in the atmosphere. We find the cost estimates of the studies to be sensitive to the level of the stabilization target, the assumed emissions baseline, intertemporal optimisation, the choice of control variable (CO2 only versus multigas), assumptions on future technological options (backstop and carbon capture and storage), and, to a lesser degree, the scientific “forum” in which the study was developed

    Presented in this paper the nature of the supersymmetrical representation theory behind 4D, N = 1 theories, as described by component fields, is investigated using the tools of Adinkras and Garden Algebras. A survey of familiar matter multiplets using these techniques reveals they are described by two fundamental valise Adinkras that are given the names of the cis-Valise (c-V) and the trans-Valise (t-V).     Intrinsic Charm Contribution to Double Quarkonium Hadroproduction

    Double J/ψJ/\psi production has been observed by the NA3 collaboration in πN\pi N and pNp N collisions with a cross section of the order of 20-30 pb. The ψψ\psi \psi pairs measured in π\pi^- nucleus interactions at 150 and 280 GeV/c/c are observed to carry an anomalously large fraction of the projectile momentum in the laboratory frame, xψψ0.6x_{\psi \psi} \geq 0.6 at 150 GeV/c/c and 0.4\geq 0.4 at 280 GeV/c/c. We postulate that these forward ψψ\psi \psi pairs are created by the materialization of Fock states in the projectile containing two pairs of intrinsic ccc \overline c quarks. We calculate the overlap of the charmonium states with the udcccc|\overline u d c \overline c c \overline c \rangle Fock state as described by the intrinsic charm model and find that the πNψψ\pi^- N \rightarrow \psi \psi longitudinal momentum and invariant mass distributions are both well reproduced.     Photoproduction of charm near threshold

    Charm and bottom production near threshold is sensitive to the multi-quark, gluonic, and hidden-color correlations of hadronic and nuclear wavefunctions in QCD since all of the target's constituents must act coherently within the small interaction volume of the heavy quark production subprocess. Although such multi-parton subprocess cross sections are suppressed by powers of 1/mQ21/m^2_Q, they have less phase-space suppression and can dominate the contributions of the leading-twist single-gluon subprocesses in the threshold regime.     Hadron Spectra for Semileptonic Heavy Quark Decay

    We calculate the leading perturbative and power corrections to the hadronic invariant mass and energy spectra in semileptonic heavy hadron decays. We apply our results to the BB system. Moments of the invariant mass spectrum, which vanish in the parton model, probe gluon bremsstrahlung and nonperturbative effects. Combining our results with recent data on BB meson branching ratios, we obtain a lower bound Λˉ>410MeV\bar\Lambda>410\,{\rm MeV} and an upper bound mbpole<4.89m_b^{\rm pole}<4.89\,GeV. The Brodsky-Lepage-Mackenzie scale setting procedure suggests that higher order perturbative corrections are small for bottom decay, and even tractable for charm decay.Comment: 24 pages, uses REVTeX, 5 EPS figures embedded with epsf.sty, slightly modified version to appear in Phys.     Phenomenology of V_ub from Ratios of Inclusive B Decay Rates

    We explore the theoretical feasibility of extracting V_ub from two ratios built from B meson inclusive partial decays, R_1 = Gamma(b-> u cbar s)/3Gamma(b -> c l nu), and R_2 = [Gamma(b -> c X) - Gamma(b -> cbar X)]/Gamma(b -> c ubar d). We discuss contributions to these quantities from perturbative and nonperturbative physics, and show that they can be computed with overall uncertainties at the level of 10%.Comment: 19 pages, 8 embedded EPS figures, uses REVTe

    Power Counting in the Soft-Collinear Effective Theory

    We describe in some detail the derivation of a power counting formula for the soft-collinear effective theory (SCET). This formula constrains which operators are required to correctly describe the infrared at any order in the Lambda_QCD/Q expansion (lambda expansion). The result assigns a unique lambda-dimension to graphs in SCET solely from vertices, is gauge independent, and can be applied independent of the process.     Order alpha_s^2 beta_0 Correction to the Charged Lepton Spectrum in b \to c \ell \bar\nu_\ell decays

    We compute the \alpha_s^2\beta_0 part of the two-loop QCD corrections to the charged lepton spectrum in b \to c \ell \bar\nu_\ell decays and find them to be about 50\% of the first order corrections at all lepton energies, except those close to the end point. Including these corrections we extract the central values \bar\Lambda=0.33 GeV and \lambda_1=-0.17 GeV^2 for the HQET matrix elements and use them to determine the MS\overline{\rm MS} b and c quark masses, and |V_{cb}|.Comment: 15 pages, 1 Postscript figur

    Resummation of Running Coupling Effects in Semileptonic B Meson Decays and Extraction of Vcb|V_{cb}|

    We present a determination of Vcb|V_{cb}| from semileptonic B decays that includes resummation of supposedly large perturbative corrections, originating from the running of the strong coupling. We argue that the low value of the BLM scale found previously for inclusive decays is a manifestation of the renormalon divergence of the perturbative series starting already in third order. A reliable determination of Vcb|V_{cb}| from inclusive decays is possible if one either uses a short-distance b quark mass or eliminates all unphysical mass parameters in terms of measured observables, such that all infra-red contributions of order 1/mb1/m_b cancel explicitly. We find that using the MS\overline{\rm MS} running mass significantly reduces the perturbative coefficients already in low orders. For a semileptonic branching ratio of 10.9%10.9\% we obtain Vcb(τB/1.50ps)1/2=0.041±0.002|V_{cb}|(\tau_B/1.50\,{\rm ps})^{1/2}= 0.041\pm 0.002 from inclusive decays, in good agreement with the value extracted from exclusive decays.Comment: 37 pages + 4 figures, final version accepted for publication in Phys.     Scale setting for alpha_s beyond leading order

    We present a general procedure for incorporating higher-order information into the scale-setting prescription of Brodsky, Lepage and Mackenzie. In particular, we show how to apply this prescription when the leading coefficient or coefficients in a series in the strong coupling alpha_s are anomalously small and the original prescription can give an unphysical scale. We give a general method for computing an optimum scale numerically, within dimensional regularization, and in cases when the coefficients of a series are known. We apply it to the heavy quark mass and energy renormalization in lattice NRQCD, and to a variety of known series. Among the latter, we find significant corrections to the scales for the ratio of e+e- to hadrons over muons, the ratio of the quark pole to MSbar mass, the semi-leptonic B-meson decay width, and the top decay width. Scales for the latter two decay widths, expressed in terms of MSbar masses, increase by factors of five and thirteen, respectively, substantially reducing the size of radiative corrections.Comment: 39 pages, 15 figures, 5 tables, LaTeX2
