Lattice dielectric response of CdCu{3}Ti{4}O{12} and of CaCu{3}Ti{4}O{12} from first principles
Structural, vibrational, and lattice dielectric properties of
CdCu{3}Ti{4}O{12} are studied using density-functional theory within the local
spin-density approximation, and the results are compared with those computed
previously for CaCu{3}Ti{4}O{12}. Replacing Ca with Cd is found to leave many
calculated quantities largely unaltered, although significant differences do
emerge in zone-center optical phonon frequencies and mode effective charges.
The computed phonon frequencies of CdCu{3}Ti{4}O{12} are found to be in
excellent agreement with experiment, and the computed lattice contribution to
the intrinsic static dielectric constant (~60) also agrees exceptionally well
with a recent optical absorption experiment. These results provide further
support for a picture in which the lattice dielectric response is essentially
conventional, suggesting an extrinsic origin for the anomalous low-frequency
dielectric response recently observed in both materials.Comment: 5 pages; uses REVTEX macros. Also available at

Time-Fractional KdV Equation: Formulation and Solution using Variational Methods
In this work, the semi-inverse method has been used to derive the Lagrangian
of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation. Then, the time operator of the
Lagrangian of the KdV equation has been transformed into fractional domain in
terms of the left-Riemann-Liouville fractional differential operator. The
variational of the functional of this Lagrangian leads neatly to Euler-Lagrange
equation. Via Agrawal's method, one can easily derive the time-fractional KdV
equation from this Euler-Lagrange equation. Remarkably, the time-fractional
term in the resulting KdV equation is obtained in Riesz fractional derivative
in a direct manner. As a second step, the derived time-fractional KdV equation
is solved using He's variational-iteration method. The calculations are carried
out using initial condition depends on the nonlinear and dispersion
coefficients of the KdV equation. We remark that more pronounced effects and
deeper insight into the formation and properties of the resulting solitary wave
by additionally considering the fractional order derivative beside the
nonlinearity and dispersion terms.Comment: The paper has been rewritten, 12 pages, 3 figure
Wave function mapping conditions in Open Quantum Dots structures
We discuss the minimal conditions for wave function spectroscopy, in which
resonant tunneling is the measurement tool. Two systems are addressed: resonant
tunneling diodes, as a toy model, and open quantum dots. The toy model is used
to analyze the crucial tunning between the necessary resolution in
current-voltage characteristics and the breakdown of the wave functions probing
potentials into a level splitting characteristic of double quantum wells. The
present results establish a parameter region where the wavefunction
spectroscopy by resonant tunneling could be achieved. In the case of open
quantum dots, a breakdown of the mapping condition is related to a change into
a double quantum dot structure induced by the local probing potential. The
analogy between the toy model and open quantum dots show that a precise control
over shape and extention of the potential probes is irrelevant for wave
function mapping. Moreover, the present system is a realization of a tunable
Fano system in the wave function mapping regime.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure
Duality cascades and duality walls
We recast the phenomenon of duality cascades in terms of the Cartan matrix
associated to the quiver gauge theories appearing in the cascade. In this
language, Seiberg dualities for the different gauge factors correspond to Weyl
reflections. We argue that the UV behavior of different duality cascades
depends markedly on whether the Cartan matrix is affine ADE or not. In
particular, we find examples of duality cascades that can't be continued after
a finite energy scale, reaching a "duality wall", in terminology due to M.
Strassler. For these duality cascades, we suggest the existence of a UV
completion in terms of a little string theory.Comment: harvmac, 24 pages, 4 figures. v2: references added. v3: reference

GPIHBP1 expression in gliomas promotes utilization of lipoprotein-derived nutrients
GPIHBP1, a GPI-anchored protein of capillary endothelial cells, binds lipoprotein lipase (LPL) within the subendothelial spaces and shuttles it to the capillary lumen. The GPIHBP1-bound LPL is essential for the margination of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins (TRLs) along capillaries, allowing the lipolytic processing of TRLs to proceed. In peripheral tissues, the intravascular processing of TRLs by the GPIHBP1-LPL complex is crucial for generating lipid nutrients for adjacent parenchymal cells. GPIHBP1 is absent in capillaries of the brain, which uses glucose for fuel; however, GPIHBP1 is expressed in capillaries of mouse and human gliomas. Importantly, the GPIHBP1 in glioma capillaries captures locally produced LPL. We document, by NanoSIMS imaging, that TRLs marginate along glioma capillaries and that there is uptake of TRL-derived lipid nutrients by surrounding glioma cells. Thus, GPIHBP1 expression in gliomas facilitates TRL processing and provides a source of lipid nutrients for glioma cells
Mapping of periodically poled crystals via spontaneous parametric down-conversion
A new method for characterization of periodically poled crystals is developed
based on spontaneous parametric down-conversion. The method is demonstrated on
crystals of Y:LiNbO3, Mg:Y:LiNbO3 with non-uniform periodically poled
structures, obtained directly under Czochralski growth procedure and designed
for application of OPO in the mid infrared range. Infrared dispersion of
refractive index, effective working periods and wavelengths of OPO were
determined by special treatment of frequency-angular spectra of spontaneous
parametric down-conversion in the visible range. Two-dimensional mapping via
spontaneous parametric down-conversion is proposed for characterizing spatial
distribution of bulk quasi-phase matching efficiency across the input window of
a periodically poled sample.Comment: 19 pages, 6 figure
Quark and pion condensation in a chromomagnetic background field
The general features of quark and pion condensation in dense quark matter
with flavor asymmetry have been considered at finite temperature in the
presence of a chromomagnetic background field modelling the gluon condensate.
In particular, pion condensation in the case of a constant abelian
chromomagnetic field and zero temperature has been studied both analytically
and numerically. Under the influence of the chromomagnetic background field the
effective potential of the system is found to have a global minimum for a
finite pion condensate even for small values of the effective quark coupling
constant. In the strong field limit, an effective dimensional reduction has
been found to take place.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figure
