    Inhibition of terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase by adenine dinucleotides Unique inhibitory action of Ap5A

    AbstractTerminal deoxynucleotidyltransferase (TdT) exhibits strong sensitivity to ATP and its dinucleotide analogues, Ap2A, Ap3A, Ap4A, Ap5A and Ap6A. Similar to ATP, all of the dinucleotides appear to be competitive inhibitors of TdT catalysis with respect to substrate deoxynucleoside triphosphates and effectively block the UV-mediated substrate cross-linking to TdT. Among the various dinucleotides, Ap5A and Ap6A (diadenosine 5'-5' penta- and hexaphosphate, respectively) are significantly more effective than dinucleotides containing 2, 3 or 4 phosphate backbones. Furthermore, Ap5A is found to be the only dinucleotide which has reactivity at both substrate- and primer-binding domains in TdT

    Registration of DB 199313, Cytoplasmic Male Sterile Grain Amaranth Genetic Stock

    Grain amaranth (Amaranthus spp.) seed stocks are customarily from self-pollinating plants that open pollinate and are not F1 hybrids. However, cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) traits are available for hybrid seed production. DB 199313 (Reg. No. GS-10, PI 686465) grain amaranth (A. hypochondriacus L.) is the first publicly available CMS line in Amaranthus. It is an F1 hybrid from a cross between male sterile plants of DB 921 (PI 568125) and male fertile PI 568179. Fertility can be restored by crossing DB 199313 with K432 (PI 538323). DB 199313 is adapted for seed production in Ames, IA, from direct seeding in the field, but it has not been selected for competitive agronomic performance. It provides a new publicly available genetic resource for improved grain amaranth crossing

    The upstream magnetic field of collisionless GRB shocks: constraint by Fermi-LAT observations

    Long-lived >100 MeV emission has been a common feature of most Fermi-LAT detected gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), e.g., detected up to ~10^3s in long GRBs 080916C and 090902B and ~10^2s in short GRB 090510. This emission is consistent with being produced by synchrotron emission of electrons accelerated to high energy by the relativistic collisionless shock propagating into the weakly magnetized medium. Here we show that this high-energy afterglow emission constrains the preshock magnetic field to satisfy 1(n/1cc)^{9/8} mG<B<10^2(n/1cc)^{3/8}mG, where n is the preshock density, more stringent than the previous constraint by X-ray afterglow observations on day scale. This suggests that the preshock magnetic field is strongly amplified, most likely by the streaming of high energy shock accelerated particles.Comment: 9 pages, JCAP accepte

    Demonstration of the temporal matter-wave Talbot effect for trapped matter waves

    We demonstrate the temporal Talbot effect for trapped matter waves using ultracold atoms in an optical lattice. We investigate the phase evolution of an array of essentially non-interacting matter waves and observe matter-wave collapse and revival in the form of a Talbot interference pattern. By using long expansion times, we image momentum space with sub-recoil resolution, allowing us to observe fractional Talbot fringes up to 10th order.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figure

    Kaon Production and Kaon to Pion Ratio in Au+Au Collisions at \snn=130 GeV

    Mid-rapidity transverse mass spectra and multiplicity densities of charged and neutral kaons are reported for Au+Au collisions at \snn=130 GeV at RHIC. The spectra are exponential in transverse mass, with an inverse slope of about 280 MeV in central collisions. The multiplicity densities for these particles scale with the negative hadron pseudo-rapidity density. The charged kaon to pion ratios are K+/π=0.161±0.002(stat)±0.024(syst)K^+/\pi^- = 0.161 \pm 0.002 {\rm (stat)} \pm 0.024 {\rm (syst)} and K/π=0.146±0.002(stat)±0.022(syst)K^-/\pi^- = 0.146 \pm 0.002 {\rm (stat)} \pm 0.022 {\rm (syst)} for the most central collisions. The K+/πK^+/\pi^- ratio is lower than the same ratio observed at the SPS while the K/πK^-/\pi^- is higher than the SPS result. Both ratios are enhanced by about 50% relative to p+p and pˉ\bar{\rm p}+p collision data at similar energies.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 1 tabl

    Azimuthal anisotropy at RHIC: the first and fourth harmonics

    We report the first observations of the first harmonic (directed flow, v_1), and the fourth harmonic (v_4), in the azimuthal distribution of particles with respect to the reaction plane in Au+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Both measurements were done taking advantage of the large elliptic flow (v_2) generated at RHIC. From the correlation of v_2 with v_1 it is determined that v_2 is positive, or {\it in-plane}. The integrated v_4 is about a factor of 10 smaller than v_2. For the sixth (v_6) and eighth (v_8) harmonics upper limits on the magnitudes are reported.Comment: 6 pages with 3 figures, as accepted for Phys. Rev.
