    [EN] This study aimed to improve productive and reproductive performance of female rabbit does during the summer season hot climate using vitamin C or cooled water in combination with equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) treatment. Sixty New Zealand White rabbit does were assigned to three groups, according to drinking-water treatment: 1) fresh tap water without any supplementation (control, C), 2) cooled drinking water (10-15ÂșC) (CW), and 3) fresh tap water supplemented daily with added ascorbic acid (1 g/L) (vitamin C). Twenty four hours before mating, does of each group were randomly divided into two subgroups; H does were intravenously injected with 40 IU/doe eCG, while NH does did not receive any hormonal treatment. Productive and reproductive performance were signifi cantly (P<0.05) improved in the treated groups. Kit weights at kindling and weaning were greater (P<0.05) in both vitamin C and cooled water groups than in the control regardless of hormonal treatment. It is worthy noticed that conception rate and litter size at birth were adversely affected by eCG, especially in does drinking vitamin C. The percentage of mature oocytes was lower (P<0.01) in control than in treated groups. The oocyte maturation rate improved after treatment with vitamin C to reach 80% compared to 66% in control group.     Modified Equations to Calculate Water Content and Refractive Index of Honey Based on Its Total Soluble Solids

    The capacity of honey to break light is used for refractometric determination of humidity. In the present work, a manual refractometer was used to measure honey total soluble solids (73% - 86%) which are the corresponding values of refractive indices stated in Chataway’s Table. The relationship between values of total soluble solids, water content and refractive index in the obtained graphics gave equations that could be used directly to calculate both refractive index and water content of honey from its total soluble solids. This simple, fast and easy way could be applied without utilizing expensive refractometers due to their high cost or lack of their usage training. Furthermore, the suggested equation is more accurate than that of the current reference table (i.e. Chataway’s Table) and could be rapidly utilized for calculating water content in honey samples

    Physico-mechanical properties of composite cement pastes containing silica fume and fly ash

    AbstractThis works aims to study the effect of partial substitution of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) by silica fume (SF) and fly ash (FA) on the physico-mechanical properties of the hardened OPC–FA–SF composite cement pastes. The OPC was partially replaced by 20% and 30% fly ash along with 5% and 10% silica fume. The phase composition of the hydration products was investigated using XRD and DTA techniques. It was found that, the increase of FA content in OPC–FA–SF composite cement decreases the water consistency values and increases the setting times. On the other hand, the increase of SF content leads to increase the water of consistency and decrease the setting times. The partial substitution of OPC by FA and SF leads to higher porosity values with a consequent decrease in the compressive strength values especially during the early ages of hydration. At the later ages of hydration, however, the OPC–FA–SF cement pastes possess total porosity and compressive strength values close to those of the neat OPC paste. The lower of free lime contents were obtained for OPC–FA–SF composite cement pastes with the formation of further additional amounts of CSH as a result of the pozzolanic reaction. The results showed also that, the physico-mechanical properties of composite cement paste [OPC (65%)–FA (30%)–SF (5%)] were improved at later ages

    Appropriateness of Ophthalmic Cases Presenting to a Nigerian Tertiary Health Facility: Implications for Service Delivery in a Developing Country

    To assesswhether the ophthalmic cases presenting at aNigerian tertiary eye unit are appropriate for such level of care and also drawnecessary implications for service delivery. : Data on 1,321 consecutive new patients that presented at the ophthalmic clinic of the University of Teaching Hospital, Ilorin, Nigeria between February and July 2005 were reviewed on demographics, referral routes, and reasons for patronage, diagnoses and disease categories. Information on the general situation of health infrastructures prevailing at the surrounding health facilitieswas collected fromkey-informants. One thousand and ninety-one (82.6%) presentedwithout any referral and 1,095 (82.9%) patronized in order to access perceived good quality of eye care service being rendered. However, only a small proportion of their ailments (191, 14.5%) actually required attention at the tertiary level of eye care. The key informants painted a picture of severely-challenged general and health infrastructures particularly at the primary health care facility level An overwhelming majority of ophthalmic patients directly accessed eye care at the tertiary level, even though most of their ailments could have been satisfactorily treated at the lower facilities of health care were the latter to be functioning optimally. A better coordinated and strengthened health care system, particularly at the primary and secondary health care facilities would ease the burden of inappropriate presentations on tertiary health facilities inNigeria.Keywords: Health care utilization pattern, referral routes

    Effects of dietary baker’s yeast extract on the growth, blood indices and histology of Nile tilapia ( Oreochromis niloticus L.) fingerlings

    Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (average initial weight, 5.91 ± 0.04 g), were fed four isonitrogenous and isolipidic diets for 84 days. The diets contained four levels of yeast extract (CW‐I) rich in nucleotides and ÎČ‐glucan: 0 (control), 5, 10 and 15 g/kg diet. Weight gain increased linearly, whereas the feed conversion ratio decreased linearly with increasing levels of yeast extract. The diet containing 15 g/kg yeast extract resulted in significantly better (p 0.05) differences were found in dry matter, protein, lipid or ash contents or in haematocrit, haemoglobin or total protein contents among the treatment groups. Blood sample profiles showed an increase in white and red blood cells in fish fed 15 g/kg yeast extract in comparison with the other treatment groups. The fish fed the diets with 10 and 15 g/kg yeast extract had significantly higher albumin and globulin levels than the control group, whereas decreased levels of cholesterol and triglycerides, aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase were noted in fish fed the diet with 15 g/kg yeast extract. Histological analysis of the liver and intestine in fish fed the control diet showed a slightly abnormal structure in these organs. Only in fish fed diets supplemented with the highest amount of yeast extract was the structure of the hepatocytes and villi almost unchanged, which indicated that the yeast nucleotides could improve hepatic function and promote liver and gut restoration

    Study on physico-chemical properties of the Iranian waters in the Oman Sea

    The characteristics physicochemical studies in the northern part of the Oman Sea and Strait of Hormuz within the Iranian waters were conducted during 2007 and 2009.The project was implemented using Ferdous research vessel and with the cooperation of Chah Bahar Research Center. The sampling area included the whole stretch of the Iranian waters along the northern part of the Oman Sea from the northeast of the Iranian marine border of 30 miles Bay of Chabahar to the mouth of the Hormuz Strait in Hormuzgan province. Along this stretch 10 equally distributed transects at a distance of 30 miles away from each other were designated, 4 main sampling stations at a distance of 10 miles from one another were fixed at each transect. Sampling was conducted twice a year ( spring and autumn 2007 and 2009).Physicochemical parameters of water such as temperature, density, salinity, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, pH, EC and chlorophyll-a were recorded at stations using CTD multiparameter probe. Nutrients samples were collected by multi water sampler and were measured by spectrophotometric method. According to achieved results; we can point out to the following outlines below: The beginning of thermocline layer starts in the regional Iranian Territorial Waters of Oman Sea; located at approximate depth of 10m; in spring, 20-40m; in autumn, and at 100m depth in winter; seasons, with an average difference in temperature of 10˚C; between surface and deeper layers. In another word, permanent thermocline exists annually in this body of water; where only the point of start, and the fracture width of thermocline layer; alter with alteration of seasons. Horizontal and vertical distribution of electrical conductivities, obey exactly from thermal degree structure; in such a way that, with increase in temperature; they increase, and with decrease in temperature; they decrease. Level of salinity increase from east to west, but it decrease; from surface to deeper layers. In deeper regions, especially in the midway east of the Oman Sea; the level of salinity in the deeper waters from 150-300m, there is a considerable increase observed in salinity, due to very high salinity waters of The Persian Gulf; that are entering the Sea of Oman, via the Striate of Hormouz from the bottom; where they are having their effect following the whole length of the Sea of Oman; through their path. The level of water density from offshore to onshore, and from surface to deeper levels increase in such a way that; its average in surface layers is 24g/cm^3, and at 400m depth; is 29g/cm^3, and at 600m; reaches to 30g/cm^3. The level of Chlorophyll-a in surface waters, in the northeastern midway; is higher than the northwestern midway of the Sea of Oman, and it decreases from inshore to offshore waters, but its vertical distribution; has caused somehow in a way, that the highest distribution and concentration of chlorophyll-a; to be formed in deeper layers, between about 20-40m depths. Then by the increase in water depth, its concentration decreases drastically; reaching zero in magnitude. Concentration of dissolved oxygen is higher in spring in comparison to that of autumn, and the highest level is achieved in water layers located at 10-40m depth (where the level of chlorophyll-a is higher). In addition to which, that its vertical structure; shows the existence of a permanent oxycline layer at this region, in a way that; by seasonal alterations (similar to that of thermocline layer), only the point of start and that of the thickness of oxycline layer changes. The layer of oxycline is established from seawaters; located at 10m depth in spring, and at20-40m waters in autumn; whereas the same layer is formed at 100m seawaters in winter, and then by water depth increase; it reaches crisis condition. The highest level of water pH; has been achieved in the spring of year 2009 (1388 Iranian Calendar), where some northern and northwestern regions of the Strait of Hormouz; were suffering from the remnants of red tide occurrences (~8.5), where the pH level decreased from water surface, and its vertical alteration trend; obeyed to that of the same for temperature and chlorophyll-a vertical structure, especially for dissolved oxygen parameter, where the maximum decrease was recorded coinciding with formation of oxycline layer. The level of water turbidity increased from offshore to inshore direction, but it decreased from water surface to depth for the Sea of Oman. But nutrient levels increased; at surface water layers from offshore to inshore, and from west to east, for the same body of water. In addition to that, concentration of nutrients in autumn (after monsoon); were more than that of, spring season (before monsoon), where; concentration of their vertical structure increase from water surface toward deeper sections

    Packet Reservation Multiple Access (PRMA) with Random Contention

    Packet reservation multiple access (PRMA) can be considered as a merge of slotted ALOHA protocol and time division multiple access (TDMA) protocol. Independent terminals transmit packets to base station by contending to access an available time slots. A terminal that succeeds in reserving a certain time slot keeps on this reservation for transmitting its subsequent packets. Speech activity detection is used in PRMA to improve system capacity. In this work we propose a simpler contention mechanism that does not depend on a predetermined permission probability as in the original PRMA. In the new method, terminals select the contention slot uniformly from the pool of remaining free slots in the current frame. We evaluate the performance of the new contention mechanism in terms of various metrics including maximum number of carried voice calls and packet delays for a given acceptable drop rate of voice packets. We show that the new mechanism is superior to that of the original PRMA for loaded systems and is expected to be insensitive for traffic source burstiness
