Constraints on the Formation of the Planet Around HD188753A
The claimed discovery of a Jupiter-mass planet in the close triple star
system HD 188753 poses a problem for planet formation theory. A circumstellar
disk around the planet's parent star would be truncated close to the star,
leaving little material available for planet formation. In this paper, we
attempt to model a protoplanetary disk around HD 188753A using a fairly simple
alpha-disk model, exploring a range of parameters constrained by observations
of T Tauri-type stars. The disk is truncated to within 1.5 to 2.7 AU, depending
on model parameters. We find that the in situ formation of the planet around HD
188753A is implausible.Comment: Accepted version, to appear in ApJ. 23 pages, 5 figures (3 in color
Isometric Representations of Totally Ordered Semigroups
Let S be a subsemigroup of an abelian torsion-free group G. If S is a
positive cone of G, then all C*-algebras generated by faithful isometrical
non-unitary representations of S are canonically isomorphic. Proved by Murphy,
this statement generalized the well-known theorems of Coburn and Douglas. In
this note we prove the reverse. If all C*-algebras generated by faithful
isometrical non-unitary representations of S are canonically isomorphic, then S
is a positive cone of G. Also we consider G = Z\times Z and prove that if S
induces total order on G, then there exist at least two unitarily not
equivalent irreducible isometrical representation of S. And if the order is
lexicographical-product order, then all such representations are unitarily
equivalent.Comment: February 21, 2012. Kazan, Russi
Hybridization gap and Fano resonance in SmB
We present results of Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and Spectroscopy (STS)
measurements on the "Kondo insulator" SmB. The vast majority of surface
areas investigated was reconstructed but, infrequently, also patches of varying
size of non-reconstructed, Sm- or B-terminated surfaces were found. On the
smallest patches, clear indications for the hybridization gap and
inter-multiplet transitions were observed. On non-reconstructed surface areas
large enough for coherent co-tunneling we were able to observe clear-cut Fano
resonances. Our locally resolved STS indicated considerable finite conductance
on all surfaces independent of their structure.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Development of code evaluation criteria for assessing predictive capability and performance
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), because of its unique ability to predict complex three-dimensional flows, is being applied with increasing frequency in the aerospace industry. Currently, no consistent code validation procedure is applied within the industry. Such a procedure is needed to increase confidence in CFD and reduce risk in the use of these codes as a design and analysis tool. This final contract report defines classifications for three levels of code validation, directly relating the use of CFD codes to the engineering design cycle. Evaluation criteria by which codes are measured and classified are recommended and discussed. Criteria for selecting experimental data against which CFD results can be compared are outlined. A four phase CFD code validation procedure is described in detail. Finally, the code validation procedure is demonstrated through application of the REACT CFD code to a series of cases culminating in a code to data comparison on the Space Shuttle Main Engine High Pressure Fuel Turbopump Impeller
First Structure Formation: A Simulation of Small Scale Structure at High Redshift
We describe the results of a simulation of collisionless cold dark matter in
a LambdaCDM universe to examine the properties of objects collapsing at high
redshift (z=10). We analyze the halos that form at these early times in this
simulation and find that the results are similar to those of simulations of
large scale structure formation at low redshift. In particular, we consider
halo properties such as the mass function, density profile, halo shape, spin
parameter, and angular momentum alignment with the minor axis. By understanding
the properties of small scale structure formation at high redshift, we can
better understand the nature of the first structures in the universe, such as
Population III stars.Comment: 31 pages, 14 figures; accepted for publication in ApJ. Figure 1 can

Accelerated Curing and Enhanced Material Properties of Conductive Polymer Nanocomposites by Joule Heating
Joule heating is useful for fast and reliable manufacturing of conductive composite materials. In this study, we investigated the influence of Joule heating on curing conditions and material properties of polymer-based conductive composite materials consisting of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). We applied different voltages to the CNT nanocomposites to investigate their electrical stabilization, curing temperature, and curing time. The result showed that highly conductive CNT/PDMS composites were successfully cured by Joule heating with uniform and fast heat distribution. For a 7.0 wt % CNT/PDMS composite, a high curing temperature of around 100 °C was achieved at 20 V with rapid temperature increase. The conductive nanocomposite cured by Joule heating also revealed an enhancement in mechanical properties without changing the electrical conductivities. Therefore, CNT/PDMS composites cured by Joule heating are useful for expediting the manufacturing process for particulate conductive composites in the field of flexible and large-area sensors and electronics, where fast and uniform curing is critical to their performance
Modulation of NKG2D expression in human CD8(+) T cells corresponding with tuberculosis drug cure.
BACKGROUND: Biomarkers predicting tuberculosis treatment response and cure would facilitate drug development. This study investigated expression patterns of the co-stimulation molecule NKG2D in human tuberculosis and treatment to determine its potential usefulness as a host biomarker of tuberculosis drug efficacy. METHODS: Tuberculosis patients (nâ=â26) were recruited in Lahore, Pakistan, at diagnosis and followed up during treatment. Household contacts (nâ=â24) were also recruited. NKG2D expression was measured by qRT-PCR in RNA samples both ex vivo and following overnight mycobacterial stimulation in vitro. Protein expression of NKG2D and granzyme B was measured by flow cytometry. RESULTS: NKG2D expression in newly diagnosed tuberculosis patients was similar to household contacts in ex vivo RNA, but was higher following in vitro stimulation. The NKG2D expression was dramatically reduced by intensive phase chemotherapy, in both ex vivo blood RNA and CD8(+) T cell protein expression, but then reverted to higher levels after the continuation phase in successfully treated patients. CONCLUSION: The changes in NKG2D expression through successful treatment reflect modulation of the peripheral cytotoxic T cell response. This likely reflects firstly in vivo stimulation by live Mycobacterium tuberculosis, followed by the response to dead bacilli, antigen-release and finally immunopathology resolution. Such changes in host peripheral gene expression, alongside clinical and microbiological indices, could be developed into a biosignature of tuberculosis drug-induced cure to be used in future clinical trials
Permutation sampling in Path Integral Monte Carlo
A simple algorithm is described to sample permutations of identical particles
in Path Integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) simulations of continuum many-body systems.
The sampling strategy illustrated here is fairly general, and can be easily
incorporated in any PIMC implementation based on the staging algorithm.
Although it is similar in spirit to an existing prescription, it differs from
it in some key aspects. It allows one to sample permutations efficiently, even
if long paths (e.g., hundreds, or thousands of slices) are needed. We
illustrate its effectiveness by presenting results of a PIMC calculation of
thermodynamic properties of superfluid Helium-four, in which a very simple
approximation for the high-temperature density matrix was utilized
