On the triplet state of poly(N-vinylcarbazole)

Get PDF
Triplet state properties including transient triplet absorption spectrum, intersystem crossing yields in solution at room temperature and phosphorescence spectra, quantum yields and lifetimes at low temperature as well as singlet oxygen yields were obtained for poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) in 2-methyl-tetrahydrofuran (2-MeTHF), cyclohexane or benzene. The results allow the determination of the energy value for the lowest lying triplet state and also show that triplet formation and deactivation is a minor route for relaxation of the lowest excited singlet state of PVK. In addition, they show the triplet state is at higher energy than reported heavy metal dopants used for electrophosphorescent devices, such that if this is used as a host it will not quench their luminescence.http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/B6TFN-4DTTJJC-7/1/b605edb9859b607f1a9b1c1348af029

Mid-Infrared Imaging of NGC 6334 I

We present high-resolution (<0.5") mid-infrared Keck II images of individual sources in the central region of NGC 6334 I. We compare these images to images at a variety of other wavelengths from the near infrared to cm radio continuum and speculate on the nature of the NGC 6334 I sources. We assert that the cometary shape of the UCHII region here, NGC 6334 F, is due to a champagne-like flow from a source on the edge of a molecular clump and not a due to a bow shock caused by the supersonic motion of the UCHII region through the interstellar medium. The mid-infrared emission in concentrated into an arc of dust that define the boundary between the UCHII region and the molecular clump. This dust arc contains a majority of the masers in the region. We discuss the nature of the four near-infrared sources associated with IRS-I 1, and suggest that one of the sources, IRS1E, is responsible for the heating and ionizing of the UCHII region and the mid-infrared dust arc. Infrared source IRS-I 2, which has been thought to be a circumstellar disk associated with a linear distribution of methanol masers, is found not to be directly coincident with the masers and elongated at a much different position angle. IRS-I 3 is found to be a extended source of mid-infrared emission coming from a cluster of young dusty sources seen in the near-infrared.Comment: Accepted for publication by the Astrophysical Journal, 27 pages, 9 figure

The effect of substitution and isomeric imperfection on the photophysical behaviour of p-phenylenevinylene trimers

Get PDF
Spectroscopic and photophysical properties of two p-phenylenevinylene (PV) trimers, 2,5-substituted diheptyl-(p-phenylenevinylene) and di-[(2-ethylhexyl)oxy]-(p-phenylenevinylene), were studied using absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence and laser flash photolysis. The change from alkyl to alkyloxy groups red-shifts the absorption and fluorescence bands. The rate of internal conversion is independent of the substitution, whereas alkyloxy substitution increases the S1 [rightwards wave arrow] T1 intersystem crossing rate by an order of magnitude. The relevance for the behaviour of conjugated PPV polymers is discussed. For diheptyl-PV, a sample having ca. 3% of the cis-configuration was also studied. Comparison between the all-trans and the cis-contaminated samples revealed no significant differences in their photophysical properties.http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/B6TFN-4C0TKVG-4/1/bb1be7e4a272bb7910483cae927d04a

Relationship between distance run per week, omega-3 index, and arachidonic acid (AA)/eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) ratio: An Observational Retrospective Study in Non-elite Runners

Get PDF
Background: Tissue availability of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) depends on several factors, including dietary intake, physical exercise, genetic variation, and metabolic turnover. However, there is limited evidence whether running training activity per se may influence indices associated with PUFA metabolism such as Omega-3 (ω-3) index and arachidonic acid (AA; 20:4ω-6)/eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA; 20:5ω-3) ratio. Objective: To examine the association between kilometers (Km) run per week and changes in ω-3 index and AA/EPA ratio. Methods: We conducted a retrospective, observational, cohort study of 257 non-elite runners (mean age: 40.85 ± 12.17 years) who consumed no fatty acid supplements and provided a blood sample for analysis. The whole blood samples were collected by finger sticks, stored on absorbent filter paper, and then PUFA were quantified by gas chromatography (GC) and ω-3 index and AA/EPA ratio measured. Results: In a multivariate linear regression model, a gradual decrease of the ω-3 index was observed with higher weekly running distance (β = −0.033; 95% CI −0.039 to −0.026; R2 = 0.447; p < 0.0001). We also found a progressive increase of the AA/EPA ratio in subjects who ran greater weekly distances (β = 0.092; 95% CI 0.038 to 0.146; R2 = 0.320; p = 0.001). No other significant associations were observed with other variables, including years of running training and weekly training frequency (hours/week). Finally, as expected, a significant inverse correlation between ω-3 index and AA/EPA ratio (β = −2.614; 95% CI −3.407 to −1.821; R2 = 0.336; p < 0.0001) was detected. Conclusions: These findings suggest that distance running training and its weekly volume may negatively contribute to changes of the ω-3 index and AA/EPA ratio. Further studies with greater sample size will be required to replicate and extend these data

Spectral and Photophysical Studies of Poly[2,6-(1,5-dioctylnaphthalene)]thiophenes

A complete spectroscopic and photophysical study of three alternating naphthalene-α-thiophene copolymers was undertaken in solution (room and low temperature) and in the solid state (thin films in a Zeonex matrix). The study comprises absorption, emission, and triplet−triplet spectra together with quantitative measurements of quantum yield (fluorescence, intersystem-crossing, internal conversion, and singlet oxygen formation) lifetimes and singlet and triplet energies. The overall data allow the determination of the rate constants for all the decay processes. Comparison between the behavior of analogous 1-naphthyl(oligo)thiophenes and the 2,6-naphthalene(oligo)thiophene copolymers allows several important observations. First, the polymers display higher fluorescence quantum yields and lower S1→T1 intersystem-crossing yields than the oligomers. This can be attributed to the presence of the 1,5-dioctyloxynaphthalene groups in the copolymers leading to a more rigid polymer backbone, which decreases radiationless deactivation and increases the radiative efficiency. Second, the singlet and triplet energies are significantly lower in the polymers than with the corresponding oligomers. This implies a lower HOMO−LUMO energy difference in the polymers due to an extended π-delocalization. Third, the singlet-to-triplet (S1−T1) energy splitting is higher in the oligomers than with the polymers, even though the former display higher intersystem-crossing yields. It is suggested that this may result from intersystem-crossing in the oligomers involving significant charge-transfer (CT) character (spin-orbit coupling is mediated by CT mixing involving the singlet and triplet states in matrix elements of the type 1ΨCT |H‘|3Ψ1) of the relevant excited states but that is less important with the polymers. We believe that this may be relevant to understanding the nature of CT states in conjugated copolymers

The use of DRIS for nutritional diagnosis in oil palm in the State of Pará.

The oil palm crop has expanded significantly in the state of Pará, which has not been followed in a proportional manner by studies aiming at increasing yield through plant nutrition. The objective of this study was to evaluate general and specific norms of the Diagnosis and Recommendation Integrated System (DRIS) for genetic materials of oil palm (African and interspecific hybrid) at two ages (young and adult plants) and evaluate possible deficiencies in fertilization and soil correction practices. The DRIS norms were composed of means, standard deviations, and coefficients of variation of bivariate, specific, and general relationships among nutrients of 144 leaf samples. The DRIS norms specific for genetic material did not differ from the general norms; however, a large number of differences were found between specific bivariate relationships for age groups, among themselves, and in relation to the general norms. The regression analysis between the nutritional balance index and yield were better explained when age groups were discriminated. In the young plants, the number of cases of stands with deficiencies followed the order Ca > Fe > B > S > Mn > K > Mg = Cu > Zn > N > P; and for adults, this order was Ca > Mn > Zn > Fe > S = B > N = Cu > K > Mg > P. The DRIS norms can be utilized in diagnostics regardless of genetic material; however, they must be specified for the age of the plant. Most of the stands showed deficiency in Ca and micronutrients, coinciding with the least used nutrients in oil palm crops in the state of Pará, as well as emphasizing the need for soil liming
