Mirror Maps and Instanton Sums for Complete Intersections in Weighted Projective Space

    Get PDF
We consider a class of Calabi-Yau compactifications which are constructed as a complete intersection in weighted projective space. For manifolds with one K\"ahler modulus we construct the mirror manifolds and calculate the instanton sum.Comment: 10 page

Integrable three-body systems with distinct two-body forces

    Get PDF
Translationally invariant one-dimensional three-body systems with mutually different pair potentials are derived that possess a third constant of motion, both classically and quantum-mechanically; a Lax pair is given, and all (even) regular solutions of the corresponding functional equation are obtained

A note on gravity-scalar fluctuations in holographic RG flow geometries

We study five-dimensional gravity models with non-vanishing background scalar fields which are dual to non-conformal boundary field theories. We develop a procedure to decouple the graviton fluctuations from the scalar ones and apply it to the simplest case of one scalar field. The quadratic action for the decoupled scalar fluctuations has a very simple form and can be used to compute two-point functions. We perform this computation for the two examples of background RG flow recently considered by DeWolfe and Freedman and find physically reasonable results.Comment: 13 pages, latex, no figure

    Lectures on Mirror Symmetry

    Get PDF
We give an introduction to mirror symmetry of strings on Calabi-Yau manifolds with an emphasis on its applications e.g. for the computation of Yukawa couplings. We introduce all necessary concepts and tools such as the basics of toric geometry, resolution of singularities, construction of mirror pairs, Picard-Fuchs equations, etc. and illustrate all of this on a non-trivial example. Chern-Simons Gravity and Holographic Anomalies

    Get PDF
We present a holographic treatment of Chern-Simons (CS) gravity theories in odd dimensions. We construct the associated holographic stress tensor and calculate the Weyl anomalies of the dual CFT.Comment: Added references, and minor corrections. 21 pages, havmac, no figure

Integrable field theories from Poisson algebras

    Get PDF
New integrable 1 + 1 dimensional classical field theories are found that include infinite dimensional analogues of N-particle Toda-and Calogero-Moser systems, as well as non-relativistic theories with an interaction that is polynomial in the first (spatial) derivative of the field. The existence, as well as the involutivity, of an infinite set of independent conserved quantities follows most easily from a 2 + 1 dimensional Lax-pair which uses as its underlying infinite dimensional Lie algebra a Poisson algebra of functions in two variables

Factorization properties of genus-two bosonic and fermionic string partition functions

    Get PDF
The genus-two bosonic and fermionic string partition functions factorize, in the separating pinching limit, into genus-one partition functions after integrating out the supermoduli with super-Beltrami support on the puncture points in the fermionic and heterotic case

Nonperturbative Effective Actions of N=2 Supersymmetric Gauge Theories

    Get PDF
We elaborate on our previous work on N=2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. In particular, we show how to explicitly determine the low energy quantum effective action for G=SU(3)G=SU(3) from the underlying hyperelliptic Riemann surface, and calculate the leading instanton corrections. This is done by solving Picard-Fuchs equations and asymptotically evaluating period integrals. We find that the dynamics of the SU(3)SU(3) theory is governed by an Appell system of type F4F_4, and compute the exact quantum gauge coupling explicitly in terms of Appell functions.Comment: 57p, harvmac with hyperlinks, 9 uuencoded ps figure

On the Monodromies of N=2 Supersymmetric Yang-Mills Theory

    Get PDF
We review the generalization of the work of Seiberg and Witten on N=2 supersymmetric SU(2) Yang-Mills theory to SU(n) gauge groups. The quantum moduli spaces of the effective low energy theory parametrize a special family of hyperelliptic genus n-1 Riemann surfaces. We discuss the massless spectrum and the monodromies.Comment: 15p, harvmac/lanlmac with hyperlinks, 4 uuencoded compressed postscript figures appende

Matching the BPS Spectra of Heterotic - Type I - Type I' Strings

    Get PDF
We give a detailed discussion of the matching of the BPS states of heterotic, type I and type I' theories in d=9 for general backgrounds. This allows us to explicitly identify these (composite) brane states in the type I' theory that lead to gauge symmetry enhancement at critical points in moduli space. An example is the enhancement of SO(16)Ă—SO(16)SO(16)\times SO(16) to E8Ă—E8E_8\times E_8.Comment: 11 pages; minor typos in eq. (3), (4) and on page 9 have been corrected; two footnotes taking into account additional references have been added; version to appear in Physics Letters
