    Authenticated storage using small trusted hardware

    A major security concern with outsourcing data storage to third-party providers is authenticating the integrity and freshness of data. State-of-the-art software-based approaches require clients to maintain state and cannot immediately detect forking attacks, while approaches that introduce limited trusted hardware (e.g., a monotonic counter) at the storage server achieve low throughput. This paper proposes a new design for authenticating data storage using a small piece of high-performance trusted hardware attached to an untrusted server. The proposed design achieves significantly higher throughput than previous designs. The server-side trusted hardware allows clients to authenticate data integrity and freshness without keeping any mutable client-side state. Our design achieves high performance by parallelizing server-side authentication operations and permitting the untrusted server to maintain caches and schedule disk writes, while enforcing precise crash recovery and write access control

    An assessment of serum leptin levels in patients with chronic viral hepatitis: a prospective study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The role of leptin in the course of liver disease due to chronic viral hepatitis (CVH) remains controversial. Our aims were to investigate the relationship between serum leptin concentrations and the severity of liver disease in a cohort of subjects with HBeAg negative chronic hepatitis B (CHB) and C (CHC) and to analyze the effect of body composition, the leptin system and insulin resistance together with viral factors on virologic response to antiviral treatment.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We studied 50 (36 men) consecutive patients suffering from biopsy-proven CVH due to HBV (n = 25) or HCV (n = 25) infection. Thirty-two (17 men) healthy volunteers served as controls. Levels of serum leptin and insulin were determined by immunoassays at baseline and at the end of the treatment.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A significant association between serum leptin levels and the stage of hepatic fibrosis was noted; patients with cirrhosis presented higher serum leptin levels compared to those with lower fibrosis stage [CHB patients (17436 pg/ml vs 6028.5 pg/ml, p = 0.03), CHC patients (18014 pg/ml vs 4385 pg/ml, p = 0.05]. An inverse correlation between lower leptin levels and response to lamivudine monotherapy was noted in patients with CHB; those with a virologic response presented lower serum leptin levels (5334 vs 13111.5 pg/ml; p-value = 0.003) than non-responders. In genotype 1 CHC patients, insulin resistance played a significant role in the response to antiviral therapy.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our data clearly suggest that cirrhosis due to CHB or CHC is associated with higher leptin levels. Increased serum leptin levels represent a negative prognostic factor for response to lamivudine monotherapy in patients with CHB. In CHC patients insulin resistance strongly influences the response to antiviral treatment in patients infected with genotype 1.</p

    The Viscoelastic Properties of Passive Eye Muscle in Primates. I: Static Forces and Step Responses

    The viscoelastic properties of passive eye muscles are prime determinants of the deficits observed following eye muscle paralysis, the root cause of several types of strabismus. Our limited knowledge about such properties is hindering the ability of eye plant models to assist in formulating a patient's diagnosis and prognosis. To investigate these properties we conducted an extensive in vivo study of the mechanics of passive eye muscles in deeply anesthetized and paralyzed monkeys. We describe here the static length-tension relationship and the transient forces elicited by small step-like elongations. We found that the static force increases nonlinearly with length, as previously shown. As expected, an elongation step induces a fast rise in force, followed by a prolonged decay. The time course of the decay is however considerably more complex than previously thought, indicating the presence of several relaxation processes, with time constants ranging from 1 ms to at least 40 s. The mechanical properties of passive eye muscles are thus similar to those of many other biological passive tissues. Eye plant models, which for lack of data had to rely on (erroneous) assumptions, will have to be updated to incorporate these properties

    Kinematic redundancy and variance of eye, head and trunk displacements during large horizontal gaze reorientations in standing humans

    Shifting the direction of the line of sight in everyday life often involves rotations not only of the eyes and head but also of the trunk. Here, we investigated covariation patterns of eye-in-orbit, head-on-trunk and trunk-in-space angular horizontal displacements during whole-body rotations to targets of up to 180° eccentricity performed by standing healthy human subjects. The spatial covariation was quantified statistically across various behavioral task conditions (unpredictable, memory driven predictable, visual feedback) and constraints (accuracy) by principal components (PC) analysis. Overall, the combined movement was stereotyped such that the first two PCs accounted for essentially the whole data variance of combined gaze transfers up to about 400 ms, suggesting that the three mechanical degrees of freedom under consideration are reduced to two kinematic degrees of freedom. Moreover, quantification of segment velocity variability across repetitions showed that velocities of eye-in-space and head-in-space (i.e. &apos;end-point&apos; velocity) were less variable than those of the elemental variables composing them. In contrast, three statistically significant PCs accounted for the covariation of the three segments during presumably vestibularly mediated nystagmic transfers, suggesting control by a separate driving circuit. We conclude that progression of the line of sight is initially stereotypic and fulfills criteria defining a motor synergy. © 2010 Springer-Verlag

    Alexander&apos;s law during high-acceleration head rotations in humans

    Alexander&apos;s law states that the amplitude of the spontaneous nystagmus grows with increasing gaze in the direction of the fast phase. Using the search-coil method we employed head impulses at various eye-in-orbit azimuth angles to test (i) whether the normal vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) in the behaviorally relevant high-frequency range has intrinsic properties that could account for Alexander&apos;s law and (ii) whether such properties can also be shown in patients with unilateral vestibulopathy. We showed that the gain of the VOR remained unaffected by eye-in-orbit position in contols and in patients, both on ipsilesional and contralesional stimuli. These findings suggest that eye-in-orbit position does not directly modulate the activity in VOR pathways, neither during unbalanced but reciprocal (in controls), nor during unbalanced and nonreciprocal natural vestibular stimulation (in patients). © 2011 Wolters Kluwer Health | Lippincott Williams &amp; Wilkins

    Identifying jitter outliers in single fiber electromyography: Comparison of four methods

    Background: Little is known about how different outlier estimation methods affect cutoff limits for outliers in single fiber electromyography. Methods: We compared in a prospective fashion the established 18th jitter value (18thjv) method to three, whole-distribution based, outlier detection methods: the interquartile range (IQR), the log-normal, and the Z-score method. The reference limits were probed in a normal cohort and in myasthenia gravis (MG) patients. Results: Differences in outlier cutoff values between the different methods were in the range of 2 μs. The number of abnormal muscles according to the computed criteria was similar for all four methods in the control group. Classification metrics (sensitivity, specificity, Youden&apos;s statistic, and predictive values) were also similar among the different methods. In the MG group, however, the Z-score method failed to identify the abnormal jitter values. Accordingly, Kappa agreement was substantial to perfect (0.658 to 1) between the three methods (18thjv, IQR, and log-normal), but was equivalent to chance between the three methods and the Z-score in the MG group. Conclusions: The established 18thjv method proved largely robust when compared to whole-distribution based methods, and its use in clinical practice is justified. Simple estimation of outlier limits by adding two SDs to the mean of the data, leads to unacceptable deviations from the true cutoff values. Moreover, in a clinical scenario in which the final electrodiagnosis depends only on the number of outliers, it is meaningful to accept a tolerance zone of about 2 μs, which is the approximate variation range among the different methods. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals LL

    Foot rotation contribution to trunk and gaze stability during whole-body mediated gaze shifts: a principal component analysis study

    Large gaze displacements are mediated by combined motion of the eye, head, trunk, and foot. We applied principal component analysis (PCA) to examine the degree of variability and linearity in the angular velocity pattern of the various segments involved that participate in this task. Ten normal subjects stood up and had to visually fixate and realign their bodies with LED targets separated 45° apart, ranging from ±45 to 360°. The outbound movement in this paradigm is unpredictable whereas the return (inbound) movement occurs under spatially predictable conditions. Under such predictable conditions, subjects generate in approximately 15% of the trials gaze shifts, with periods of fairly constant high gaze velocity (single-step gaze shifts). PCA showed that gaze velocity variability did not change if the feet were rotating or not. Foot velocity was variable and showed additional PCs suggestive of non-linear motion components. Trunk and head-in-space velocity showed intermediate levels of variability but its variability decreased during the foot stepping movements. The results suggest that the feet, trunk, and head are less tightly controlled by the central nervous system than gaze velocity. Movements of the feet seem to aid trunk stability and motion rather than gaze control. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved
