Cancer microenvironment and endoplasmic reticulum stress response
Different stressful conditions such as hypoxia, nutrient deprivation, pH changes, or reduced vascularization, potentially able to act as growth-limiting factors for tumor cells, activate the unfolded protein response (UPR). UPR is therefore involved in tumor growth and adaptation to severe environments and is generally cytoprotective in cancer. The present review describes the molecular mechanisms underlying UPR and able to promote survival and proliferation in cancer. The critical role of UPR activation in tumor growth promotion is discussed in detail for a few paradigmatic tumors such as prostate cancer and melanoma
Nucleon Tensor Charge from Exclusive Electroproduction
Exclusive electroproduction from nucleons is suggested for extracting
the tensor charge and other quantities related to transversity from
experimental data. This process isolates C-parity odd and chiral odd
combinations of t-channel exchange quantum numbers. In a hadronic picture it
connects the meson production amplitudes to C-odd Regge exchanges with final
state interactions. In a description based on partonic degrees of freedom, the
helicity structure for this C-odd process relates to the quark helicity flip,
or chiral odd generalized parton distributions. This differs markedly from
deeply virtual Compton scattering, and both vector meson and charged
electroproduction, where the axial charge can enter the amplitudes. Contrarily
the tensor charge enters the process. The connection through the
helicity description of the process to both the partonic and hadronic
perspectives is studied and exploited in model calculations to indicate how the
tensor charge and other transversity parameters can be related to cross section
and spin asymmetry measurements over a broad range of kinematics.Comment: 40 pages, 14 figures Revised text clarifying main points, fixing

Intralabyrinthine Vestibular Schwannoma Responsive to Intratympanic Gentamicin Treatment
Intralabyrinthine schwannoma (ILS) is a rare benign tumor that affects the ends of cochlear and vestibular nerves. In a majority of the cases, it occurs with unilateral progressive sensorineural hearing loss. Less frequent symptoms include tinnitus, imbalance, vertigo, or fullness. The advent of magnetic resonance imaging allows early diagnosis and enables an appropriate therapeutic protocol. This report describes a case of intravestibular schwannoma, with fluctuating hearing loss and intractable vertigo, treated with intratympanic gentamicin. The patient was a 28-year-old woman with intractable vertigo and fluctuating left-side hearing loss caused by left intravestibular schwannoma. Because surgery was temporarily rejected by the patient, a single dose of intratympanic gentamicin was administered. Following this, the patient showed a significant improvement in the symptoms. However, moderate to flat sensorineural hearing loss was also observed. Intratympanic gentamicin infiltration is a valid therapeutic option for patients with ILS, affected by intractable vertigo, when the patient refuses surgery
Fermat Potentials for Non-Perturbative Gravitational Lensing
The images of many distant galaxies are displaced, distorted and often
multiplied by the presence of foreground massive galaxies near the line of
sight; the foreground galaxies act as gravitational lenses. Commonly, the lens
equation, which relates the placement and distortion of the images to the real
source position in the thin-lens scenario, is obtained by extremizing the time
of arrival among all the null paths from the source to the observer (Fermat's
principle). We show that the construction of envelopes of certain families of
null surfaces consitutes an alternative variational principle or version of
Fermat's principle that leads naturally to a lens equation in a generic
spacetime with any given metric. We illustrate the construction by deriving the
lens equation for static asymptotically flat thin lens spacetimes. As an
application of the approach, we find the bending angle for moving thin lenses
in terms of the bending angle for the same deflector at rest. Finally we apply
this construction to cosmological spacetimes (FRW) by using the fact they are
all conformally related to Minkowski space.Comment: accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
No more time to stay ‘single’ in the detection of Anisakis pegreffii, A. simplex (s. s.) and hybridization events between them: a multi-marker nuclear genotyping approach
A multi-marker nuclear genotyping approach was performed on larval and adult specimens of Anisakis spp. (N = 689) collected from fish and cetaceans in allopatric and sympatric areas of the two species Anisakis pegreffii and Anisakis simplex
(s. s.), in order to: (1) identify specimens belonging to the parental taxa by using nuclear markers (allozymes loci) and sequence analysis of a new diagnostic nuclear DNA locus (i.e. partial sequence of the EF1 α−1 nDNA region) and (2) recognize hybrid categories. According to the Bayesian clustering algorithms, based on those markers, most of the individuals
(N = 678) were identified as the parental species [i.e. A. pegreffii or A. simplex (s. s.)], whereas a smaller portion (N = 11)
were recognized as F1 hybrids. Discordant results were obtained when using the polymerase chain reaction–restriction
fragment length polymorphisms (PCR–RFLPs) of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) ribosomal DNA (rDNA) on
the same specimens, which indicated the occurrence of a large number of ‘hybrids’ both in sympatry and allopatry.
These findings raise the question of possible misidentification of specimens belonging to the two parental Anisakis and
their hybrid categories derived from the application of that single marker (i.e. PCR–RFLPs analysis of the ITS of
rDNA). Finally, Bayesian clustering, using allozymes and EF1 α−1 nDNA markers, has demonstrated that hybridization
between A. pegreffii and A. simplex (s. s.) is a contemporary phenomenon in sympatric areas, while no introgressive hybridization takes place between the two species
Dynamics of Fermat potentials in non-perturbative gravitational lensing
We present a framework, based on the null-surface formulation of general
relativity, for discussing the dynamics of Fermat potentials for gravitational
lensing in a generic situation without approximations of any kind.
Additionally, we derive two lens equations: one for the case of thick compact
lenses and the other one for lensing by gravitational waves. These equations in
principle generalize the astrophysical scheme for lensing by removing the
thin-lens approximation while retaining the weak fields.Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
