This paper was designed to evaluate the rancidity of 18 pet food samples using the Diamed FATS kits and official AOCS methods for the quantification of free fatty acids, peroxide value and concentrations of malonaldehyde and alkenal in the lipid extracted. Although expiration dates have passed, the samples presented good quality evidencing little oxidative rancidity. The results of this study suggest that the Brazilian pet food market is replete with products of excellent quality due to the competitiveness of this market sector.28SUPPL.223230(2004) Herbário, , http://www.herbario.com.br/bot/agri/alipet.htm, ALIMENTOS PARA BICHOS DE ESTIMAÇÃO, sept. 16th, 2002. Assessment Of Environmental Impact From Renewable And Non-renewable Energy Sources

The scientific studies show that the greatest amount of CO2 emissions, in the European Union, results from the production of electricity and heat (for example, the production of coal-based energy in the EU Member States generates an amount of approximately one billion tons of CO2 emissions, that is about 1/4 of total CO2 emissions in the EU). The waste sector is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions accountable for approximately one twentieth of the global greenhouse budget. This contribution consists of CH4 emission from waste anaerobic decomposition and CO2 from thermal treatments. This study presents some district heating preliminary considerations through thermo-chemical conversion of renewable and non-renewable sources. Three locations are virtually analyzed, two counties from Romania and one from Italy. A comparison is made between using different potential types of fuel: wood, coal, MSW, residual municipal solid waste (RMSW), bio-dried waste (BD) and solid-recovered fuel (SRF). The lower heating values (LHVs) of the two types of studied lignite (coal from Romania and Italy) are higher in comparison with the LHV of MSW, similar to the ones of RMSW and BD waste, but lower to the ones of SRF and wood, with some exceptions. Data suitable for preliminary global environmental balances and local impact considerations from atmospheric emissions were carried out for the quantity of primary fuel as presented. Results demonstrate that, even from the preliminary considerations, the environmental performances of district heating are strongly affected by the choice of the fuel. This paper work has been partially funded by Erasmus+ under financial agreement 2014-1-RO01-KA203-002986

Aeraulic behaviour of a biotrickling filter pilot plant: experiments and simulations

    Get PDF
Trickling bed biofilters (or biotrickling filters, BTFs) are biological systems for polluted air treatment. Hydrodynamics of BTFs, and reactors in general, is of paramount importance for obtaining good performances. In fact, a non-uniform distribution of the pollutant into the bed brings to dead zones or bypass which reduce the bed working volume and, therefore, cause low removal efficiencies. The paper presents the preliminary results obtained regarding the aeraulic behavior of a BTF pilot plant with seashells as packing material. Experimental results of bed void fraction and pressure drop at several flow rates were used to obtain Ergun equation coefficients for dry bed. A numerical simulation of the reactor flow field carried out with a commercial CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) code, validated by the means of velocity measurements made with a Hot Wire Anemometer (HWA) completed the analysis of the reactor hydrodynamics

Measurement of Atmospheric Neutrino Oscillations with a High-Density Detector

    Get PDF
We propose an experiment to test the hypothesis that the reported anomaly on atmospheric neutrino fluxes is due to nu_mu nu_x oscillations. It will rely both on a disappearance technique, exploiting the method of the dependence of the event rate on L/E, which was recently shown to be effective for detection of neutrino oscillation and measurement of the oscillation parameters, and on an appearance technique, looking for an excess of muon-less events at high energy produced by upward-going tau neutrinos. The detector will consist of iron planes interleaved by limited streamer tubes. The total mass will be about 30 kt. The possibility of recuperating most of the instrumentation from existing detectors allows to avoid R&D phases and to reduce construction time. In four years of data taking, this experiment will be sensitive to oscillations nu_mu nu_x with Delta m^2 > 10^-4 eV^2 and a mixing near to maximal, and answer the question whether nu_x is a sterile or a tau neutrino

Incidentally discovered pheochromocytoma and aldosterone-producing adenoma in the same adrenal gland

Simultaneous occurrence of pheochromocytoma and aldosterone-producing adrenocortical tumor has been rarely reported in patients with symptoms or findings suggestive for both neoplasms. Herein, we report and discuss on a challenging case of synchronous pheochromocytoma and aldosterone-producing adenoma incidentally detected in the same adrenal gland and documented by biochemical studies and pathological examination

Three-Dimensional Human iPSC-Derived Artificial Skeletal Muscles Model Muscular Dystrophies and Enable Multilineage Tissue Engineering

    Get PDF
Summary: Generating human skeletal muscle models is instrumental for investigating muscle pathology and therapy. Here, we report the generation of three-dimensional (3D) artificial skeletal muscle tissue from human pluripotent stem cells, including induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) from patients with Duchenne, limb-girdle, and congenital muscular dystrophies. 3D skeletal myogenic differentiation of pluripotent cells was induced within hydrogels under tension to provide myofiber alignment. Artificial muscles recapitulated characteristics of human skeletal muscle tissue and could be implanted into immunodeficient mice. Pathological cellular hallmarks of incurable forms of severe muscular dystrophy could be modeled with high fidelity using this 3D platform. Finally, we show generation of fully human iPSC-derived, complex, multilineage muscle models containing key isogenic cellular constituents of skeletal muscle, including vascular endothelial cells, pericytes, and motor neurons. These results lay the foundation for a human skeletal muscle organoid-like platform for disease modeling, regenerative medicine, and therapy development. : Maffioletti et al. generate human 3D artificial skeletal muscles from healthy donors and patient-specific pluripotent stem cells. These human artificial muscles accurately model severe genetic muscle diseases. They can be engineered to include other cell types present in skeletal muscle, such as vascular cells and motor neurons. Keywords: skeletal muscle, pluripotent stem cells, iPS cells, myogenic differentiation, tissue engineering, disease modeling, muscular dystrophy, organoid

Application of strategies for particulate matter reduction in urban areas: an italian case

    Get PDF
The paper describes the particulate matter pollution in a Northern Italian city: Varese. The city is distinguished by a particular orographic and meteorological situation, characterized by valleys and heavy rainfalls. Nevertheless the urban area is interested by particulate matter pollution mainly due to heating systems and traffic. Here some corrective strategies in order to reduce PM air pollution have been presented, applied and evaluated by the means of a simplified model which considers emissions and meteorological conditions
