NHEP Support for DES Shellfish Program 2005

    Get PDF
For the past three years, Great Bay Coast Watch (GBCW) volunteers have provided the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (NHDES) Shellfish Program with significant assistance in performing tasks necessary in managing shellfish resources for human safety. This report describes a continuation of this mutually beneficial partnership

Conservation Innovation in Pastoral Lands around the Globe: Challenges, Lessons and Opportunities

    Get PDF
Pastoralists and ranchers have a long history of sustained management of rangelands around the world. Several decades ago, some pastoralists and ranchers started new alliances with environmental organizations, businesses and government agencies to diversify their approaches to land management to include what can be called ‘conservation’. These efforts highlight conserving aspects of rangeland ecosystems, but often have an equal or greater emphasis on supporting pastoral livelihoods and culture. This paper asks: What types of innovations are pastoralists now pursuing in ‘conservation’? How are these innovations performing? This paper provides a synthesis of some of the types of conservation innovations being led by pastoralists and ranchers around the world. In rangelands that are privately owned, much of the innovation focuses on management practices, like rangeland restoration, regenerative ranching, education, and herding strategies. But some private landowners are taking down fences or herding animals across pastures. In the majority of the world’s rangelands, which are commonly managed, conservation innovations emphasize new locally-led governance regimes and institutional innovations. These often build upon and strengthen traditional pastoral management practices and institutions. The most impactful conservation innovations, in the face of urban spread and development, may be those that either maintain the ability of pastoralists and ranchers to keep the land open or allow them to un-fragment fragmented land and knit it back together. Unfortunately, social and ecological outcomes of conservation efforts are rarely assessed over the long term, so it is unclear how impactful these innovations are. Continuing challenges in these initiatives include how to ensure all pastoralists and ranchers benefit (resource-limited pastoralists, women, youth), how to adapt given accelerating climate change, and how conservation innovations can increase the bottom line of ranchers

Understanding the role of shame and its consequences in female hypersexual behaviours: A pilot study

    Get PDF
Background and aims: Hypersexuality and sexual addiction among females is a little understudied phenomenon. Shame is thought to be intrinsic to hypersexual behaviours, especially in women. Therefore, the aim of this study was to understand both hypersexual behaviours and consequences of hypersexual behaviours and their respective contributions to shame in a British sample of females (n = 102). Methods: Data were collected online via Survey Monkey. Results: Results showed the Sexual Behaviour History (SBH) and the Hypersexual Disorder Questionnaire (HDQ) had significant positive correlation with scores on the Shame Inventory. The results indicated that hypersexual behaviours (HBI and HDQ) were able to predict a small percentage of the variability in shame once sexual orientation (heterosexual vs. non-heterosexual) and religious beliefs (belief vs. no belief) were controlled for. Results also showed there was no evidence that religious affiliation and/or religious beliefs had an influence on the levels of hypersexuality and consequences of sexual behaviours as predictors of shame. Conclusions: While women in the UK are rapidly shifting to a feminist way of thinking with or without technology, hypersexual disorder may often be misdiagnosed and misunderstood because of the lack of understanding and how it is conceptualised. The implications of these findings are discussed

A multifrequency evaluation of active and passive microwave sensors for oil spill detection and assessment

    Get PDF
An evaluation is given of how active and passive microwave sensors can best be used in oil spill detection and assessment. Radar backscatter curves taken over oil spills are presented and their effect on synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery are discussed. Plots of microwave radiometric brightness variations over oil spills are presented and discussed. Recommendations as to how to select the best combination of frequency, viewing angle, and sensor type for evaluation of various aspects of oil spills are also discussed

A Parametric Study of Tillage Effects on Radar Backscatter

    Get PDF
Radar backscatter data for different field configurations and modulation function curves for angular and frequency variations are presented. A simplistic approach to modeling this effect is presented. It is concluded that: (1) row direction is a significant contributor to radar backscatter from cropland and must be considered when making radar measurements over bare or sparsely vegetated fields; (2) while the effect decrease with increasing frequency, it is still large (5 dB) at 13.3 GHz; (3) row effects are independent of linear polarization; (4) there is a strong aspect angle sensitivity which is a function of the scene and radar system parameters
