    Good and bad institutions:is the debate over? Cross-country firm-level evidence from the textile industry

    Using firm-level data from nine developing countries, we demonstrate that certain institutions, like restrictive labour market regulations, that are considered bad for economic growth might be beneficial for production efficiency, whereas good business environment, which is considered beneficial for economic growth, might have an adverse impact on production efficiency. We argue that our results suggest that there might be significant difference in the macro- and micro-impacts of institutional quality, such that the classification of institutions into 'good' and 'bad might be premature

    Microstructural damage evaluation in Ni-based superalloy gas turbine blades by fractal analysis

    Ni-based superalloys are used as turbine disc and blade material in which creep, fatigue and creep-fatigue are the important damage mechanisms. Mechanical properties of these alloys depend upon the amounts of gamma-gamma-prime present in the microstructure as well as precipitation of carbides along the grain boundaries. The distribution of gamma-prime depends on the chemical composition, operating temperature and the length of service exposure. During service exposure, as damage accumulates progressively, the morphological characteristics of microstructure change which needs to be assessed using metallographic technique. Conventionally, the extent of damage resulting in deterioration of mechanical properties is quantified by hardness measurement. The variation in hardness is correlated with the morphological features in the metalographic images by identifying precipitation of carbides, presence of cuboidal gamma-prime and the structural changes that occur in the matrix. In this paper, we report fractal dimensions of the insitu metallographic images which can correlate the progressive damage accumulation at various locations of the blades

    Recovery of Coal fines from Rejects by Column Flotation

    Investigations were carried out using column flotation to recover coking coal fines from the tailings generated at flotation plant of one of theoperating washeries. Columns of different diameter designed and developed by RRL, Bhubaneswar were used in these studies. Washabilitiy studies indicated that the tailings have the potential to yield 60% of clean coal at 15.0% ash level. Flotation studies in cell indicated thata product with 16% ash can be obtained at 50% yield from these tailings. Results of column flotation had indicated that the performance of column is superior to cell and close to washability data. Most of the coal values being rejected presently can be recovered by using theflotation column. The results obtained by 100 mm and 220 mm diameter laboratory columns could be reproduced on pilot column of 1000 mm diameter, confirming the validity of design and scale up criteria

    We construct wave packets for the hydrogen atom labelled by the classical action-angle variables with the following properties. i) The time evolution is exactly given by classical evolution of the angle variables. (The angle variable corresponding to the position on the orbit is now non-compact and we do not get exactly the same state after one period. However the gross features do not change.     Pivotal role of families in doctor–patient communication in oncology: a qualitative study of patients, their relatives and cancer clinicians

    Families are a unique source of support for many cancer patients. Most advanced communication skills training for oncologists are patient centred and do not cover interactions with family members. The current study used in-depth qualitative interviews of patients, relatives and cancer clinicians with thematic analysis to explore the role of family members in the communication process. Forty-one participants included 10 cancer patients, 10 relatives ensuring proportionate representation of both gender and primary cancer site and 21 doctors representing both medical and surgical oncology. Nineteen of 20 patients and relatives wanted an "open and honest" discussion with their doctors. All patients, relatives and doctors preferred involvement of the family at most stages of cancer treatment. Five themes were identified in relation to communication with family members. The participants highlighted the "importance of family for physical and psychological care," they emphasised the need to "balance patient autonomy and relatives desire to be protective" using varied "negotiating strategies" that are influenced by "socioeconomic circumstances of both patient and family." The doctor-patient-relative communication process was not static with preferences changing over time. The data suggests that communication skills training of cancer clinicians should incorporate modules on better communication with relatives

    Electrochemical stimuli-driven facile metal-free hydrogen evolution from pyrene-porphyrin-based crystalline covalent organic framework

    A [2+2] Schiff base type condensation between 5, 10,15, 20 tetrakis(4 aminophenyl)porphyrin (TAP) and 1,3,6,8 tetrakis (4 formylphenyl) pyrene (TFFPy) under solvothermal condition yields a crystalline, quasi two dimensional covalent organic framework (SB PORPy COF). The porphyrin and pyrene units are alternatively occupied in the vertex of 3D triclinic crystal having permanent micro-porosity with moderately high surface area (~869 m2g-1) and promising chemical stability. The AA stacking of the monolayers give a pyrene bridged conducting channel. SB PORPy COF has been exploited for metal free hydrogen production to understand the electrochemical behavior using the imine based docking site in acidic media. SB PORPy-COF has shown the onset potential of 50 mV and the Tafel slope of 116 mV dec-1. We expect that the addendum of the imine based COF would not only enrich the structural variety but also help to understand the electrochemical behavior of these class of materials

    Identity, communication, and conflict: an experiment

    We investigate experimentally the effects of information about native/immigrant identity, and the ability to communicate a self-chosen personal characteristic towards the rival on conflict behavior. In a two-player individual contest with British and Immigrant subjects in the UK we find that neither information about identity nor communicating self-characteristics significantly affect the average level of conflict. Both of those, however, significantly affect players’ strategies, in the sense of the extent they involve conflict over time. Overall, the results indicate that inter-personal communication may help to mitigate high intensity conflicts when the identities are common knowledge among rivals

    Adaptive Sparse-grid Gauss-Hermite Filter

    In this paper, a new nonlinear filter based on sparse-grid quadrature method has been proposed. The proposed filter is named as adaptive sparse-grid Gauss–Hermite filter (ASGHF). Ordinary sparse-grid technique treats all the dimensions equally, whereas the ASGHF assigns a fewer number of points along the dimensions with lower nonlinearity. It uses adaptive tensor product to construct multidimensional points until a predefined error tolerance level is reached. The performance of the proposed filter is illustrated with two nonlinear filtering problems. Simulation results demonstrate that the new algorithm achieves a similar accuracy as compared to sparse-grid Gauss–Hermite filter (SGHF) and Gauss–Hermite filter (GHF) with a considerable reduction in computational load. Further, in the conventional GHF and SGHF, any increase in the accuracy level may result in an unacceptably high increase in the computational burden. However, in ASGHF, a little increase in estimation accuracy is possible with a limited increase in computational burden by varying the error tolerance level and the error weighting parameter. This enables the online estimator to operate near full efficiency with a predefined computational budget
