In this paper, we develop some of the theory of SSD spaces and SSDB spaces, and deduce some results on maximally monotone multifunctions on a reflexive Banach space.Comment: 16 pages. Written version of the talk given at IX ISORA in Lima, Peru, October 200

Diseases of winter linseed : occurrence, effects and importance

    Get PDF
In 1998, a survey of the incidence and severity of diseases was carried out on 30 crops of winter linseed at early flowering and again at crop maturity. Five crops each were selected in south west, east, east Midlands, west Midlands and north of England and from Scotland. Crops were predominantly cv. Oliver (90% crops), grown from certified seed (83%) and sown in September (97%). Pasmo (Mycosphaerella) was the most important disease, affecting leaves of 73% crops at early flowering and 90% crops at maturity. Powdery mildew (70% crops), Alternaria (30% crops) on leaves and Botrytis on capsules (70% crops) were also common. Regional differences were apparent for powdery mildew, which was present in all regions except the southwest, whilst Alternaria predominated in the Midlands. Half of the crops surveyed had received fungicide sprays, but this appeared to have made limited impact on disease severity. Pasmo is a new threat to UK linseed crops and this raises concerns about the threat it poses to spring linsee

Commercial phosphoric acid fuel cell system technology development

Reducing cost and increasing reliability were the technology drivers in both the electric utility and on-site integrated energy system applications. The longstanding barrier to the attainment of these goals was materials. Differences in approaches and their technological features, including electrodes, matrices, intercell cooling, bipolar/separator plates, electrolyte management, fuel selection, and system design philosophy were discussed

In both the electric utility and onsite integrated energy system applications, reducing cost and increasing reliability are the main technology drivers. The longstanding barrier to the attainment of these goals, which manifests itself in a number of ways, was materials. The differences in approach among the three major participants (United Technologies Corporation, Westinghouse Electric Corporation/Energy Research Corporation, and Engelhard Industries) and their unique technological features, including electrodes, matrices, intercell cooling, bipolar/separator plates, electrolyte management, fuel selection and system design philosophy are discussed

Black Hole Entropy, Marginal Stability and Mirror Symmetry

We consider the superconformal quantum mechanics associated to BPS black holes in type IIB Calabi-Yau compactifications. This quantum mechanics describes the dynamics of D-branes in the near-horizon attractor geometry of the black hole. In many cases, the black hole entropy can be found by counting the number of chiral primaries in this quantum mechanics. Both the attractor mechanism and notions of marginal stability play important roles in generating the large number of microstates required to explain this entropy. We compute the microscopic entropy explicitly in a few different cases, where the theory reduces to quantum mechanics on the moduli space of special Lagrangians. Under certain assumptions, the problem may be solved by implementing mirror symmetry as three T-dualities: this is essentially the mirror of a calculation by Gaiotto, Strominger and Yin. In some simple cases, the calculation may be done in greater generality without resorting to conjectures about mirror symmetry. For example, the K3xT^2 case may be studied precisely using the Fourier-Mukai transform

Detecting stuttering events in transcripts of children’s speech

    Get PDF
Stuttering is a common problem in childhood that may persist into adulthood if not treated in early stages. Techniques from spoken language understanding may be applied to provide automated diagnosis of stuttering from children speech. The main challenges however lie in the lack of training data and the high dimensionality of this data. This study investigates the applicability of machine learning approaches for detecting stuttering events in transcripts. Two machine learning approaches were applied, namely HELM and CRF. The performance of these two approaches are compared, and the effect of data augmentation is examined in both approaches. Experimental results show that CRF outperforms HELM by 2.2% in the baseline experiments. Data augmentation helps improve systems performance, especially for rarely available events. In addition to the annotated augmented data, this study also adds annotated human transcriptions from real stuttered children’s speech to help expand the research in this field

Dyson's Brownian Motion and Universal Dynamics of Quantum Systems

We establish a correspondence between the evolution of the distribution of eigenvalues of a N×NN\times N matrix subject to a random Gaussian perturbing matrix, and a Fokker-Planck equation postulated by Dyson. Within this model, we prove the equivalence conjectured by Altshuler et al between the space-time correlations of the Sutherland-Calogero-Moser system in the thermodynamic limit and a set of two-variable correlations for disordered quantum systems calculated by them. Multiple variable correlation functions are, however, shown to be inequivalent for the two cases.Comment: 10 pages, revte

Community service is one of the tri dharma of higher education which is the duty of lectures college students, therefore in this servicewe rised the issue of how to maintain corrosion on klotok ship propellers for the Balikpapan-PPU routeand how to conduct optimal training activities so that theactors, owners and operators are orderly and take good care. The method of implementation is the form of training for 2 days and mentoring for 3 consecutive months. This training activity involved 2 lectures and 3 college students. This ship propeller maintenance training was attendedby 30 people consisting of 10 ship owners and 20 klotok ship operators. Implementation of on august 31st – September 1st 2018 with the hope that the owners and operators of the klotok ships can understand the importance of their klotok care so thath people who use sea transportation, especially the people of Balikpapan and Penajam Pasir Utara feel safe and confortable while in the klotok ship. This training makes it easier for ship owners to monitor operators directly and carryng our their klotok and operators also do not arbitrarily runklotok without maintenance. Keywords :klotok ships, maintenance, ship propellers, ship operators, training. &nbsp

Events, processes, and the time of a killing

The paper proposes a novel solution to the problem of the time of a killing (ToK), which persistently besets theories of act-individuation. The solution proposed claims to expose a crucial wrong-headed assumption in the debate, according to which ToK is essentially a problem of locating some event that corresponds to the killing. The alternative proposal put forward here turns on recognizing a separate category of dynamic occurents, viz. processes. The paper does not aim to mount a comprehensive defense of process ontology, relying instead on extant defenses. The primary aim is rather to put process ontology to work in diagnosing the current state of play over ToK, and indeed in solving it
