The chameleon groups of Richard J. Thompson: automorphisms and dynamics
The automorphism groups of several of Thompson's countable groups of
piecewise linear homeomorphisms of the line and circle are computed and it is
shown that the outer automorphism groups of these groups are relatively small.
These results can be interpreted as stability results for certain structures of
PL functions on the circle. Machinery is developed to relate the structures on
the circle to corresponding structures on the line
GHRS and ORFEUS-II Observations of the Highly Ionized Interstellar Medium Toward ESO141-055
We present Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph and ORFEUS-II measurements of
Si IV, CIV, N V, and O VI absorption in the interstellar medium of the Galactic
disk and halo toward the nucleus of the Seyfert galaxy ESO141-055. The high
ionization absorption is strong, with line strengths consistent with the
spectral signature expected for hot (log T = 5-6) collisionally ionized gas in
either a ``Galactic fountain'' or an inhomogeneous medium containing a mixture
of conductive interfaces and turbulent mixing layers. The total O VI column
density of log N ~ 15 suggests that the scale height of O VI is large (>3 kpc)
in this direction. Comparison of the high ion column densities with
measurements for other sight lines indicates that the highly ionized gas
distribution is patchy. The amount of O VI perpendicular to the Galactic plane
varies by at least a factor of ~4 among the complete halo sight lines thus far
studied. In addition to the high ion absorption, lines of low ionization
species are also present in the spectra. With the possible exception of Ar I,
which may have a lower than expected abundance resulting from partial
photoionization of gas along the sight line, the absorption strengths are
typical of those expected for the warm, neutral interstellar medium. The sight
line intercepts a cold molecular cloud with log N(H2) ~ 19. The cloud has an
identifiable counterpart in IRAS 100-micron emission maps of this region of the
sky. We detect a Ly-alpha absorber associated with ESO141-055 at z = 0.03492.
This study presents an enticing glimpse into the interstellar and intergalactic
absorption patterns that will be observed at high spectral resolution by the

Parallel Recursive State Compression for Free
This paper focuses on reducing memory usage in enumerative model checking,
while maintaining the multi-core scalability obtained in earlier work. We
present a tree-based multi-core compression method, which works by leveraging
sharing among sub-vectors of state vectors.
An algorithmic analysis of both worst-case and optimal compression ratios
shows the potential to compress even large states to a small constant on
average (8 bytes). Our experiments demonstrate that this holds up in practice:
the median compression ratio of 279 measured experiments is within 17% of the
optimum for tree compression, and five times better than the median compression
ratio of SPIN's COLLAPSE compression.
Our algorithms are implemented in the LTSmin tool, and our experiments show
that for model checking, multi-core tree compression pays its own way: it comes
virtually without overhead compared to the fastest hash table-based methods.Comment: 19 page
Improving the evidence base of Markov models used to estimate the costs of scaling up antiretroviral programmes in resource-limited settings
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Despite concerns about affordability and sustainability, many models of the lifetime costs of antiretroviral therapy (ART) used in resource limited settings are based on data from small research cohorts, together with pragmatic assumptions about life-expectancy. This paper revisits these modelling assumptions in order to provide input to future attempts to model the lifetime costs and the costs of scaling up ART.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We analysed the determinants of costs and outcomes in patients receiving ART in line with standard World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for resource poor settings in a private sector managed ART programme in South Africa. The cohort included over 5,000 patients with up to 4 years (median 19 months) on ART. Generalized linear and Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to establish cost and outcome determinants respectively.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The key variables associated with changes in mean monthly costs were: being on the second line regimen; receiving ART from 4 months prior to 4 months post treatment initiation; having a recent or current CD4 count <50 cells/”L or 50-199 cells/”l; having mean ART adherence <75% as determined by monthly pharmacy refill data; and having a current or recent viral load >100,000 copies/mL. In terms of the likelihood of dying, the key variables were: baseline CD4 count<50 cells/”l (particularly during the first 4 months on treatment); current CD4 count <50 cells/”l and 50-199 cells/”l (particularly during later periods on treatment); and being on the second line regimen. Being poorly adherent and having an unsuppressed viral load was also associated with a higher likelihood of dying.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>While there are many unknowns associated with modelling the resources needed to scale-up ART, our analysis has suggested a number of key variables which can be used to improve the state of the art of modelling ART. While the magnitude of the effects associated with these variables would be likely to differ in other settings, the variables influencing costs and survival are likely to be generalizable. This is of direct relevance to those concerned about assessing the long-term costs and sustainability of expanded access to ART.</p
Reconfiguration on sparse graphs
A vertex-subset graph problem Q defines which subsets of the vertices of an
input graph are feasible solutions. A reconfiguration variant of a
vertex-subset problem asks, given two feasible solutions S and T of size k,
whether it is possible to transform S into T by a sequence of vertex additions
and deletions such that each intermediate set is also a feasible solution of
size bounded by k. We study reconfiguration variants of two classical
vertex-subset problems, namely Independent Set and Dominating Set. We denote
the former by ISR and the latter by DSR. Both ISR and DSR are PSPACE-complete
on graphs of bounded bandwidth and W[1]-hard parameterized by k on general
graphs. We show that ISR is fixed-parameter tractable parameterized by k when
the input graph is of bounded degeneracy or nowhere-dense. As a corollary, we
answer positively an open question concerning the parameterized complexity of
the problem on graphs of bounded treewidth. Moreover, our techniques generalize
recent results showing that ISR is fixed-parameter tractable on planar graphs
and graphs of bounded degree. For DSR, we show the problem fixed-parameter
tractable parameterized by k when the input graph does not contain large
bicliques, a class of graphs which includes graphs of bounded degeneracy and
nowhere-dense graphs
Mixed-state quasiparticle transport in high-T_c cuprates: localization by magnetic field
Theory of quasiparticle transport in the mixed state of a d-wave
superconductor is developed under the assumption of disordered vortex array. A
novel universal regime is identified at fields above H*= c*H_{c2}(T/T_c)^2,
characterized by a field-independent longitudinal thermal conductivity. It is
argued that this behavior is responsible for the high-field plateau in the
thermal conductivity experimentally observed in cuprates by Krishana, Ong and

Role of the Fractalkine Receptor in CNS Autoimmune Inflammation: New Approach Utilizing a Mouse Model Expressing the Human CX3CR1
Multiple sclerosis (MS), an inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (CNS) is the leading cause of non-traumatic neurological disability in young adults. Immune mediated destruction of myelin and oligodendrocytes is considered the primary pathology of MS, but progressive axonal loss is the major cause of neurological disability. In an effort to understand microglia function during CNS inflammation, our laboratory focuses on the fractalkine/CX3CR1 signaling as a regulator of microglia neurotoxicity in various models of neurodegeneration. Fractalkine (FKN) is a transmembrane chemokine expressed in the CNS by neurons and signals through its unique receptor CX3CR1 present in microglia. During experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), CX3CR1 deficiency confers exacerbated disease defined by severe inflammation and neuronal loss. The CX3CR1 human polymorphism I249/M280 present in âŒ20% of the population exhibits reduced adhesion for FKN conferring defective signaling whose role in microglia function and influence on neurons during MS remains unsolved. The aim of this study is to assess the effect of weaker signaling through hCX3CR1I249/M280 during EAE. We hypothesize that dysregulated microglial responses due to impaired CX3CR1 signaling enhance neuronal/axonal damage. We generated an animal model replacing the mouse CX3CR1 locus for the hCX3CR1I249/M280 variant. Upon EAE induction, these mice exhibited exacerbated EAE correlating with severe inflammation and neuronal loss. We also observed that mice with aberrant CX3CR1 signaling are unable to produce FKN and ciliary neurotrophic factor during EAE in contrast to wild type mice. Our results provide validation of defective function of the hCX3CR1I249/M280 variant and the foundation to broaden the understanding of microglia dysfunction during neuroinflammation. © 2018 Cardona et al
9.7 um Silicate Features in AGNs: New Insights into Unification Models
We describe observations of 9.7 um silicate features in 97 AGNs, exhibiting a
wide range of AGN types and of X-ray extinction toward the central nuclei. We
find that the strength of the silicate feature correlates with the HI column
density estimated from fitting the X-ray data, such that low HI columns
correspond to silicate emission while high columns correspond to silicate
absorption. The behavior is generally consistent with unification models where
the large diversity in AGN properties is caused by viewing-angle-dependent
obscuration of the nucleus. Radio-loud AGNs and radio-quiet quasars follow
roughly the correlation between HI columns and the strength of the silicate
feature defined by Seyfert galaxies. The agreement among AGN types suggests a
high-level unification with similar characteristics for the structure of the
obscuring material. We demonstrate the implications for unification models
qualitatively with a conceptual disk model. The model includes an inner
accretion disk (< 0.1 pc in radius), a middle disk (0.1-10 pc in radius) with a
dense diffuse component and with embedded denser clouds, and an outer clumpy

Handwritten digit recognition by bio-inspired hierarchical networks
The human brain processes information showing learning and prediction
abilities but the underlying neuronal mechanisms still remain unknown.
Recently, many studies prove that neuronal networks are able of both
generalizations and associations of sensory inputs. In this paper, following a
set of neurophysiological evidences, we propose a learning framework with a
strong biological plausibility that mimics prominent functions of cortical
circuitries. We developed the Inductive Conceptual Network (ICN), that is a
hierarchical bio-inspired network, able to learn invariant patterns by
Variable-order Markov Models implemented in its nodes. The outputs of the
top-most node of ICN hierarchy, representing the highest input generalization,
allow for automatic classification of inputs. We found that the ICN clusterized
MNIST images with an error of 5.73% and USPS images with an error of 12.56%
