Application of Library Service Charter in Quality Service Delivery in University Libraries
Purpose was to assess the application of library service charter in quality service delivery in university libraries with reference to the University of Nairobi Library in Kenya, and propose measures to ensure successful implementation and management of the practice. Objectives of the study were to: examine the extent of the library service charter in quality service delivery in the library, establish levels of library staff awareness, perception and responsiveness to information service delivery, assess the actualization of the matrices of the library service charter for quality improvements, establish the challenges experienced by the library in realising the commitments of the service delivery charter, and propose measures to be undertaken to ensure successful actualization of the library service charter. Mixed research methods of qualitative and quantitative design were applied in the research. The library service charter played critical role in delivery of services to the information customers, significantly enhanced information management through professionalism, staff performance, teamwork and timely feedback. The challenges experienced in implementing the service charter included low work motivation, increased workload, complexity in understanding the provisions of the charter, bureaucracy, institutional weakness, targets set inhibits performance and inadequate facilitation. There is need for elaborated information fluency programme to equip the library staff with adequate knowledge and skills on all matrices of the practice. In addition, the library should plan for capacity building, provide enough copies of the service charter to patrons, and monitor and evaluate the service charter for continuous improvement of service delivery
Intimate partner violence and forced migration during pregnancy: Structural constraints to women's agency
Little is known about migration during pregnancy related to intimate partner violence
(IPV). In this paper, we examine issues of agency in relation to pregnant women\u2019s
migrations in a high HIV prevalence area of Kenya. We qualitatively explored forced
migration among pregnant women, using data from in-depth interviews, focus groups
and IPV screening forms. To quantitatively examine migration during pregnancy, we
analysed data from a prospective study of 614 pregnant women. The qualitative data
revealed that women had varied responses to violence in pregnancy, with some being
able to leave the marital home voluntarily as a strategy to escape violence. Others were
\u2018sent packing\u2019 from their marital homes when they dared to exercise autonomy, in some
cases related to HIV status. Quantitative analyses revealed that pregnant women who
migrated were more educated, less likely to be living with a partner and had fewer
children than other women. Migration among pregnant women in Kenya illustrates the
complexity of understanding women\u2019s agency in the context of IPV. The findings
indicate that there is not a dichotomy between \u2018victim\u2019 and \u2018agent\u2019, but rather a complex
dynamic between and within pregnant women, who may sequentially or simultaneously
experience aspects of victimhood and/or agentic response
Regulation and role of the PP2A-B56 holoenzyme family in cancer
Protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) inactivation is common in cancer, leading to sustained activation of pro-survival
and growth-promoting pathways. PP2A consists of a scaffolding A-subunit, a catalytic C-subunit, and a regulatory B-subunit. The functional complexity of PP2A holoenzymes arises mainly through the vast repertoire of
regulatory B-subunits, which determine both their substrate specificity and their subcellular localization.
Therefore, a major challenge for developing more effective therapeutic strategies for cancer is to identify the
specific PP2A complexes to be targeted. Of note, the development of small molecules specifically directed at
PP2A-B56α has opened new therapeutic avenues in both solid and hematological tumors. Here, we focus on the
B56/PR61 family of PP2A regulatory subunits, which have a central role in directing PP2A tumor suppressor
activity. We provide an overview of the mechanisms controlling the formation and regulation of these complexes,
the pathways they control, and the mechanisms underlying their deregulation in cancer
Induction of microRNAs, mir-155, mir-222, mir-424 and mir-503, promotes monocytic differentiation through combinatorial regulation
Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) involves a block in terminal differentiation of
the myeloid lineage and uncontrolled proliferation of a progenitor state. Using
phorbol myristate acetate (PMA), it is possible to overcome this block in THP-1
cells (an M5-AML containing the MLL-MLLT3 fusion), resulting in differentiation
to an adherent monocytic phenotype. As part of FANTOM4, we used microarrays to
identify 23 microRNAs that are regulated by PMA. We identify four PMA-induced
micro- RNAs (mir-155, mir-222, mir-424 and mir-503) that when overexpressed
cause cell-cycle arrest and partial differentiation and when used in
combination induce additional changes not seen by any individual microRNA. We
further characterize these prodifferentiative microRNAs and show that mir-155
and mir-222 induce G2 arrest and apoptosis, respectively. We find mir-424 and
mir-503 are derived from a polycistronic precursor mir-424-503 that is under
repression by the MLL-MLLT3 leukemogenic fusion. Both of these microRNAs
directly target cell-cycle regulators and induce G1 cell-cycle arrest when
overexpressed in THP-1. We also find that the pro-differentiative mir-424 and
mir-503 downregulate the anti-differentiative mir-9 by targeting a site in its
primary transcript. Our study highlights the combinatorial effects of multiple

Disruption and aberrant expression of HMGA2 as a consequence of diverse chromosomal translocations in myeloid malignancies
Chromosomal translocations that target HMGA2 at chromosome band 12q14 are seen in a variety of malignancies, notably lipoma, pleomorphic salivary adenoma and uterine leiomyoma. Although some HMGA2 fusion genes have been reported, several lines of evidence suggest that the critical pathogenic event is the expression of truncated HMGA2 isoforms. We report here the involvement of HMGA2 in six patients with myeloid neoplasia, dysplastic features and translocations or an inversion involving chromosome bands 12q13-15 and either 7p12, 8q22, 11q23, 12p11, 14q31 or 20q11. Breaks within or very close to HMGA2 were found in all six cases by molecular cytogenetic analysis, leading to overexpression of this gene as assessed by RT-PCR. Truncated transcripts consisting of HMGA2 exons 1-2 or exons 1-3 spliced to intron-derived sequences were identified in two patients, but were not seen in controls. These findings suggest that abnormalities of HMGA2 play an important and previously unsuspected role in myelodysplasia
Citywide Trauma Experience in Mwanza, Tanzania: A Need for Urgent Intervention.
Trauma remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in resource limited countries. There is paucity of published reports on trauma care in Tanzania, particularly the study area. This study was carried out to describe our experiences in trauma management outlining the etiological spectrum, injury characteristics and treatment outcome of trauma patients at our local setting and compare our results with those from other centers in the world. A descriptive prospective study of trauma patients was conducted at Bugando Medical Centre from April 2010 to March 2012. Statistical data analysis was done using SPSS software version 17.0. A total of 5672 trauma patients were enrolled in the study. The male to female ratio was 2.3: 1. The majority of patients were in the 2nd decade of life. Road traffic accident was the most common cause of trauma accounting for 60.7% of cases. The majority of patients (76.6%) sustained blunt injuries. Musculoskeletal (68.5%) and head/neck (52.6%) were the most frequent body region injured. Soft tissue injuries (open wounds) and fractures were the most common injuries accounting for 82.8% and 76.8% respectively. Majority of patients (74.4%) were treated surgically with wound debridement (94.0%) being the most frequently performed procedure. Postoperative complications were recorded in 31.5% of cases.The overall median duration of hospitalization was 26 days (range 1 day to 144 days). Mortality rate was 16.7%. Patients who had polytrauma, burn injuries and those who had tetanus and long bone fractures stayed longer in the hospital and this was statistically significant (P < 0.001), whereas the age > 65 years, severe trauma, admission Systolic Blood Pressure < 90 mmHg, presence of tetanus, severe head injury, the duration of loss of consciousness, the need for intensive care unit admission and finding of space occupying lesion on CT scan of the brain significantly influenced mortality (P < 0.001). Trauma resulting from road traffic accidents remains a major public health problem in this part of Tanzania. Urgent preventive measures targeting at reducing the occurrence of road traffic accidents is necessary to reduce the incidence of trauma in this region
De novo erythroleukemia chromosome features include multiple rearrangements, with special involvement of chromosomes 11 and 19
Erythroid leukemia (ERL or AML-M6) is an uncommon subtype of acute myeloid leukemia, the clinical, morphological, and genetic behavior of which needs further characterization. We analyzed a homogeneous group of 23 de novo AML-M6 patients whose bone marrow cells showed complex karyotypes. We also analyzed eight leukemia cell lines with erythroid phenotype, performing detailed molecular cytogenetic analyses, including spectral karyotyping (SKY) in all samples. The main features are: (1) A majority of patients (56%) had hypodiploidy. Loss of genetic material was the most common genetic change, especially monosomies of chromosome 7 or 18, and deletions of chromosome arm 5q. Taken together, 87% of the cases displayed aberrations involving chromosome 5 or 8. (2) We describe a novel, cryptic, and recurrent translocation, t(11;19)(p11.2;q13.1). Another translocation, t(12;21)(p11.2;q11.2), was found to be recurrent in a patient with ERL and in the K562 cell line. (3) MLL gene rearrangements were detected in 20% of cases (three translocations and three amplifications) and, overall, we defined 52 rearrangements (excluding deletions) with a mean of 2.3 translocations per patient. (4) Of the structural aberrations, 21% involved chromosomes 11 and 19. Most of the rearrangements were unbalanced; only 13 reciprocal translocations were observed. The general picture of chromosomal aberrations in cell lines did not reflect what occurred in patient samples. However, both primary samples and cell lines shared three common breakpoints at 19q13.1, 20q11.2, and 21q11.2. This is the first molecular cytogenetic description of the karyotype abnormalities present in patients with ERL. It should assist in the identification of genes involved in erythroleukemogenesis
Rapid migration from traditional or hybrid to fully virtual education in the age of the coronavirus pandemic: challenges, experiences and views of college and university students
The abrupt outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic throughout the world in March 2020 resulted in the sudden closure of all schools, colleges and universities, institutions, and an unprecedented pivot to remote learning. Students and teachers were confronted with the overwhelming challenge of migrating from the traditional face-to-face or hybrid mode of education to fully virtual learning and assessment environments within an extremely short amount of time. This migration was exceptionally difficult, as it took place halfway through the academic or school year in most countries. While pandemic restrictions currently vary across different regions, the 2020-2021 academic session continues to pose challenges despite the experience gained. In addition to a review of the current state-of-the-art in relation to the effects of COVID-19 on teaching and learning, this paper reports on an empirical study carried out in 26 countries (from Asia, Europe, Africa and America), by 36 academics from 29 academic institutions. Through an extensive global survey of college and university students, information was collected about the challenges (technological, economic, psychological) faced by them, as a result of the pandemic. We also asked the students’ to offer their ideas and suggestions for further improvements in teaching and learning, as we look toward a post-COVID world. In this paper, we address issues relating to the availability of, and accessibility to, necessary digital technologies (e.g., learning and communication platforms), isolation, disconnection, and loneliness among students, the overall impact of the pandemic on learning and academic performance, and the reliability of assessment methods., cybercrime dangers and fake information. A total of 1005 responses to the survey were received and analysed. The results are presented in this paper together with reflections of the authors. The paper concludes with a summary of suggestions for process improvements in distance education, and the need for preventive preparedness in the post-COVID period
