    Quantum Phonon Optics: Coherent and Squeezed Atomic Displacements

    In this paper we investigate coherent and squeezed quantum states of phonons. The latter allow the possibility of modulating the quantum fluctuations of atomic displacements below the zero-point quantum noise level of coherent states. The expectation values and quantum fluctuations of both the atomic displacement and the lattice amplitude operators are calculated in these states---in some cases analytically. We also study the possibility of squeezing quantum noise in the atomic displacement using a polariton-based approach.Comment: 6 pages, RevTe

    Phonon Universal Transmission Fluctuations and Localization in Semiconductor Superlattices with a Controlled Degree of Order

    We study both analytically and numerically phonon transmission fluctuations and localization in partially ordered superlattices with correlations among neighboring layers. In order to generate a sequence of layers with a varying degree of order we employ a model proposed by Hendricks and Teller as well as partially ordered versions of deterministic aperiodic superlattices. By changing a parameter measuring the correlation among adjacent layers, the Hendricks- Teller superlattice exhibits a transition from periodic ordering, with alterna- ting layers, to the phase separated opposite limit; including many intermediate arrangements and the completely random case. In the partially ordered versions of deterministic superlattices, there is short-range order (among any NN conse- cutive layers) and long range disorder, as in the N-state Markov chains. The average and fluctuations in the transmission, the backscattering rate, and the localization length in these multilayered systems are calculated based on the superlattice structure factors we derive analytically. The standard deviation of the transmission versus the average transmission lies on a {\it universal\/} curve irrespective of the specific type of disorder of the SL. We illustrate these general results by applying them to several GaAs-AlAs superlattices for the proposed experimental observation of phonon universal transmission fluctuations.Comment: 16-pages, Revte

    Chandra observation of the central galaxies in A1060 cluster of galaxies

    Chandra observation of the central region of the A1060 cluster of galaxies resolved X-ray emission from two giant elliptical galaxies, NGC 3311 and NGC 3309. The emission from these galaxies consists of two components, namely the hot interstellar medium (ISM) and the low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). We found the spatial extent of the ISM component was much smaller than that of stars for both galaxies, while the ratios of X-ray to optical blue-band luminosities were rather low but within the general scatter for elliptical galaxies. After subtracting the LMXB component, the ISM is shown to be in pressure balance with the intracluster medium of A1060 at the outer boundary of the ISM. These results imply that the hot gas supplied from stellar mass loss is confined by the external pressure of the intracluster medium, with the thermal conduction likely to be suppressed. The cD galaxy NGC 3311 does not exhibit the extended potential structure which is commonly seen in bright elliptical galaxies, and we discuss the possible evolution history of the very isothermal cluster A1060.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, Latex2e(emulateapj5), accepted in Ap

    Improvement in Cryogenic Stability of the Model Coil of the LHD Helical Coil by Lowering the Temperature

    Helical coils of the Large Helical Device are pool-cooled superconducting magnets, in which propagation of a normal-zone has been observed several times at about 86% of the nominal current of 13.0 kA. It is planned to improve the cryogenic stability by lowering the inlet temperature. In order to estimate the effect, the cryogenic stability of a model coil of the helical coil was examined in saturated and subcooled helium. Liquid helium is supplied from the bottom of the model coil, and it is exhausted through the winding to the current-leads tank. The inlet helium is subcooled by a pre-cooler. A normal zone was initiated by a heater on the conductor at the bottom of the coil. In saturated helium of 4.4 K and 0.12 MPa, the minimum current to propagate over the next turn varies from 10.7 to 11.2 kA in the four cases that are without or with additional thermal shields, and before or after being subcooled. The difference is considered to be caused by the change of quality of saturated helium inside the winding or by the change of the wetted condition of the conductor surface. The minimum currents are higher at the lower temperatures in subcooled helium. It is raised up to 11.7 kA at 3.5 K of the temperature inside the winding. The propagation velocity at each minimum current is almost same. Namely, the propagation velocities at the same current are slower at the lower temperature in subcooled heliu

    Self-Consistent Velocity Dependent Effective Interactions

    The theory of self-consistent effective interactions in nuclei is extended for a system with a velocity dependent mean potential. By means of the field coupling method, we present a general prescription to derive effective interactions which are consistent with the mean potential. For a deformed system with the conventional pairing field, the velocity dependent effective interactions are derived as the multipole pairing interactions in doubly-stretched coordinates. They are applied to the microscopic analysis of the giant dipole resonances (GDR's) of 148,154Sm{}^{148,154}Sm, the first excited 2+2^+ states of Sn isotopes and the first excited 3−3^- states of Mo isotopes. It is clarified that the interactions play crucial roles in describing the splitting and structure of GDR peaks, in restoring the energy weighted sum rule, and in reducing the values of B(Eλ)B(E\lambda).Comment: 35 pages, RevTeX, 7 figures (available upon request), to appear in Phys.Rev.

    The speciation and genotyping of Cronobacter isolates from hospitalised patients

    The World Health Organization (WHO) has recognised all Cronobacter species as human pathogens. Among premature neonates and immunocompromised infants, these infections can be life-threatening, with clinical presentations of septicaemia, meningitis and necrotising enterocolitis. The neurological sequelae can be permanent and the mortality rate as high as 40 – 80 %. Despite the highlighted issues of neonatal infections, the majority of Cronobacter infections are in the elderly population suffering from serious underlying disease or malignancy and include wound and urinary tract infections, osteomyelitis, bacteraemia and septicaemia. However, no age profiling studies have speciated or genotyped the Cronobacter isolates. A clinical collection of 51 Cronobacter strains from two hospitals were speciated and genotyped using 7-loci multilocus sequence typing (MLST), rpoB gene sequence analysis, O-antigen typing and pulsed- field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). The isolates were predominated by C. sakazakii sequence type 4 (63 %, 32/51) and C. malonaticus sequence type 7 (33 %, 17/51). These had been isolated from throat and sputum samples of all age groups, as well as recal and faecal swabs. There was no apparent relatedness between the age of the patient and the Cronobacter species isolated. Despite the high clonality of Cronobacter , PFGE profiles differentiated strains across the sequence types into 15 pulsotypes. There was almost complete agreement between O-antigen typing and rpoB gene sequence analysis and MLST profiling. This study shows the value of applying MLST to bacterial population studies with strains from two patient cohorts, combined with PFGE for further discrimination of strains

    Asteroseismological Observations of the Central Star of the Planetary Nebula NGC 1501

    We report on a global CCD time-series photometric campaign to decode the pulsations of the nucleus of the planetary nebula NGC1501. The star is hot and hydrogen-deficient, similar to the pre-white-dwarf PG 1159 stars. NGC1501 shows pulsational brightness variations of a few percent with periods ranging from 19 to 87 minutes. The variations are very complex, suggesting a pulsation spectrum that requires a long unbroken time series to resolve. Our CCD photometry of the star covers a two-week period in 1991 November, and used a global network of observatories. We obtained nearly continuous coverage over an interval of one week in the middle of the run. We have identified 10 pulsation periods, ranging from 5235 s down to 1154 s. We find strong evidence that the modes are indeed nonradial g-modes. The ratios of the frequencies of the largest-amplitude modes agree with those expected for modes that are trapped by a density discontinuity in the outer layers. We offer a model for the pulsation spectrum that includes a common period spacing of 22.3 s and a rotation period of 1.17 days; the period spacing allows us to assign a seismological mass of 0.55+/-0.03 Msun.Comment: 12 pages, AASTEX, 7 tables, 6 EPS figures, to appear in AJ, 12/96 Corrected version repairs table formatting and adds missing Table

    Fermi Surface Study of Quasi-Two-Dimensional Organic Conductors by Magnetooptical Measurements

    Magnetooptical measurements of several quasi-two-dimensional (q2D) organic conductors, which have simple Fermi surface structure, have been performed by using a cavity perturbation technique. Despite of the simple Fermi surface structure, magnetooptical resonance results show a dramatic difference for each sample. Cyclotron resonances (CR) were observed for q-(BEDT-TTF)2I3 and (BEDT-TTF)3Br(pBIB), while periodic orbit resonances (POR) were observed for (BEDT-TTF)2Br(DIA) and (BEDT-TTF)3Cl(DFBIB). The selection of the resonance seems to correspond with the skin depth for each sample. The effective mass of POR seems to have a mass enhancement due to the many-body effect, while effective mass of CR is independent of the strength of the electron-electron interaction.
