    Iinfluence of Main Technological Parameters of Drying on Quality of Bagasse From Carrot and Beet

    The work studies the drying process of vegetable bagasse, namely of carrot and beet. There is studied the moisture content kinetics of vegetable bagasse and determined the dependence of the process duration on main technological parameters in the work of a vibration vacuum dryer, namely, an amplitude and frequency. There were studied quality parameters of obtained concentrated products, namely the colorimetric estimation of dried bagasse of carrot and beet. Based on obtained results of the study, it was established, that the use of vibration in the process of drying bagasse favors conservation and formation of colorimetric characteristics of a dried product. Determined color characteristics gave a possibility to establish, that at thermal processing it is very important to decrease the drying process duration and temperature. Research data proved prospects of producing concentrated products, namely, dried bagasse of carrot and beet by the offered method. It allows to regulate quality parameters of a ready product: color, brightness, consistence, viscosity and physical-chemical properties. Obtained concentrated products are characterized with high organoleptic indices, food value. This product may be used in the wide spectrum of food industry, such as, for example: juice supplement, stuff for confectionary mass, filling for confectionary products, as biological supplement for healthy nutrition

    Bacterial Distribution in the Rhizosphere of Wild Barley under Contrasting Microclimates

    Background: All plants in nature harbor a diverse community of rhizosphere bacteria which can affect the plant growth. Our samples are isolated from the rhizosphere of wild barley Hordeum spontaneum at the Evolution Canyon (‘EC’), Israel. The bacteria which have been living in close relationship with the plant root under the stressful conditions over millennia are likely to have developed strategies to alleviate plant stress. Methodology/Principal Findings: We studied distribution of culturable bacteria in the rhizosphere of H. spontaneum and characterized the bacterial 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate deaminase (ACCd) production, biofilm production, phosphorus solubilization and halophilic behavior. We have shown that the H. spontaneum rhizosphere at the stressful South Facing Slope (SFS) harbors significantly higher population of ACCd producing biofilm forming phosphorus solubilizing osmotic stress tolerant bacteria. Conclusions/Significance: The long-lived natural laboratory ‘EC ’ facilitates the generation of theoretical testable and predictable models of biodiversity and genome evolution on the area of plant microbe interactions.     Prospect and potential of Burkholderia sp. against Phytophthora capsici Leonian: a causative agent for foot rot disease of black pepper

    Foot rot disease is a very destructive disease in black pepper in Malaysia. It is caused by Phytophthora capsici Leonian, which is a soilborne pathogenic protist (phylum, Oomycota) that infects aerial and subterranean structures of many host plants. This pathogen is a polycyclic, such that multiple cycles of infection and inoculum production occur in a single growing season. It is more prevalent in the tropics because of the favourable environmental conditions. The utilization of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) as a biological control agent has been successfully implemented in controlling many plant pathogens. Many studies on the exploration of beneficial organisms have been carried out such as Pseudomonas fluorescens, which is one of the best examples used for the control of Fusarium wilt in tomato. Similarly, P. fluorescens is found to be an effective biocontrol agent against the foot rot disease in black pepper. Nowadays there is tremendous novel increase in the species of Burkholderia with either mutualistic or antagonistic interactions in the environment. Burkholderia sp. is an indigenous PGPR capable of producing a large number of commercially important hydrolytic enzymes and bioactive substances that promote plant growth and health; are eco-friendly, biodegradable and specific in their actions; and have a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity in keeping down the population of phytopathogens, thus playing a great role in promoting sustainable agriculture today. Hence, in this book chapter, the potential applications of Burkholderia sp. to control foot rot disease of black pepper in Malaysia, their control mechanisms, plant growth promotion, commercial potentials and the future prospects as indigenous PGPR were discussed in relation to sustainable agriculture
