Hints towards the Emergent Nature of Gravity

A possible way out of the conundrum of quantum gravity is the proposal that general relativity (GR) is not a fundamental theory but emerges from an underlying microscopic description. Despite recent interest in the emergent gravity program within the physics as well as the philosophy community, an assessment of the theoretical evidence for this idea is lacking at the moment. We intend to fill this gap in the literature by discussing the main arguments in favour of the hypothesis that the metric field and its dynamics are emergent. First, we distinguish between microstructure inspired from GR, such as through quantization or discretization, and microstructure that is not directly motivated from GR, such as strings, quantum bits or condensed matter fields. The emergent gravity approach can then be defined as the view that the metric field and its dynamics are derivable from the latter type of microstructure. Subsequently, we assess in how far the following properties of (semi-classical) GR are suggestive of underlying microstructure: (1) the metric's universal coupling to matter fields, (2) perturbative non-renormalizability, (3) black hole thermodynamics, and (4) the holographic principle. In the conclusion we formalize the general structure of the plausibility arguments put forward.Comment: 36 pages, v2: minor additions, references added. Magneto-optical determination of the electron-solid phase-boundary

We have obtained a two-dimensional electron-solid phase diagram in the extreme magnetic quantum limit by studying the temperature dependence of the radiative recombination of electrons in a GaAs/AlxGa1-xAs heterojunction with holes bound to a delta-layer, 250 A away in the GaAs, of Be acceptors. The low-energy shoulder to the luminescence line, indicating the presence of the electron solid, is seen to disappear at a filling-factor-dependent critical temperature. We observe no shoulder above a filling factor of 0.25, and the critical temperature falls to below 0.4 K at filling factors 1/5 and 1/7

Radio frequency pulsed-gate charge spectroscopy on coupled quantum dots

Time-resolved electron dynamics in coupled quantum dots is directly observed by a pulsed-gate technique. While individual gate voltages are modulated with periodic pulse trains, average charge occupations are measured with a nearby quantum point contact as detector. A key component of our setup is a sample holder optimized for broadband radio frequency applications. Our setup can detect displacements of single electrons on time scales well below a nanosecond. Tunneling rates through individual barriers and relaxation times are obtained by using a rate equation model. We demonstrate the full characterization of a tunable double quantum dot using this technique, which could also be used for coherent charge qubit control

Nanomechanical resonators operating as charge detectors in the nonlinear regime

We present measurements on nanomechanical resonators machined from Silicon-on-Insulator substrates. The resonators are designed as freely suspended Au/Si beams of lengths on the order of 1 - 4 um and a thickness of 200 nm. The beams are driven into nonlinear response by an applied modulation at radio frequencies and a magnetic field in plane. The strong hysteresis of the magnetomotive response allows sensitive charge detection by varying the electrostatic potential of a gate electrode.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure

Dynamic photoconductive gain effect in shallow-etched AlGaAs/GaAs quantum wires

We report on a dynamic photoconductive gain effect in quantum wires which are lithographically fabricated in an AlGaAs/GaAs quantum well via a shallow-etch technique. The effect allows resolving the one-dimensional subbands of the quantum wires as maxima in the photoresponse across the quantum wires. We interpret the results by optically induced holes in the valence band of the quantum well which shift the chemical potential of the quantum wire. The non-linear current-voltage characteristics of the quantum wires also allow detecting the photoresponse effect of excess charge carriers in the conduction band of the quantum well. The dynamics of the photoconductive gain are limited by the recombination time of both electrons and holes
