Percentile Queries in Multi-Dimensional Markov Decision Processes
Markov decision processes (MDPs) with multi-dimensional weights are useful to
analyze systems with multiple objectives that may be conflicting and require
the analysis of trade-offs. We study the complexity of percentile queries in
such MDPs and give algorithms to synthesize strategies that enforce such
constraints. Given a multi-dimensional weighted MDP and a quantitative payoff
function , thresholds (one per dimension), and probability thresholds
, we show how to compute a single strategy to enforce that for all
dimensions , the probability of outcomes satisfying is at least . We consider classical quantitative payoffs from
the literature (sup, inf, lim sup, lim inf, mean-payoff, truncated sum,
discounted sum). Our work extends to the quantitative case the multi-objective

Elusive Active Galactic Nuclei
A fraction of active galactic nuclei do not show the classical Seyfert-type
signatures in their optical spectra, i.e. they are optically "elusive". X-ray
observations are an optimal tool to identify this class of objects. We combine
new Chandra observations with archival X-ray data in order to obtain a first
estimate of the fraction of elusive AGN in local galaxies and to constrain
their nature. Our results suggest that elusive AGN have a local density
comparable to or even higher than optically classified Seyfert nuclei. Most
elusive AGN are heavily absorbed in the X-rays, with gas column densities
exceeding 10^24 cm^-2, suggesting that their peculiar nature is associated with
obscuration. It is likely that in elusive AGN, the nuclear UV source is
completely embedded and the ionizing photons cannot escape, which prevents the
formation of a classical Narrow Line Region. Elusive AGN may contribute

Galaxies with unusually high abundances of molecular hydrogen
A sample of 66 galaxies from the catalog of Bettoni et al. (CISM) with
anomalously high molecular-to-atomic hydrogen mass ratios (M_{mol}/M_{HI}>2) is
considered. The sample galaxies do not differ systematically from other
galaxies in the catalog with the same morphological types, in terms of their
photometric parameters, rotational velocities, dust contents, or the total mass
of gas in comparison with galaxies of similar linear sizes and disk angular
momentum. This suggests that the overabundance of is due to transition of
HI to H_2. Galaxies with bars and active nuclei are found more frequently among
galaxies which have M_{mol} estimates in CISM. In a small fraction of galaxies,
high M_{mol}/M_{HI} ratios are caused by the overestimation of M_{mol} due to a
low conversion factor for the translation of CO-line intensities into the
number of H_2 molecules along the line of sight. It is argued that the
"molecularization" of the bulk of the gas mass could be due 1) to the
concentration of gas in the inner regions of the galactic disks, resulting to a
high gas pressure and 2) to relatively low star-formation rate per unit mass of
molecular gas which indeed takes place in galaxies with high M_{mol}/M_{HI}

Electrostatically gated membrane permeability in inorganic protocells
Although several strategies are now available to produce functional microcompartments analogous to primitive cell-like structures, little progress has been made in generating protocell constructs with self-controlled membrane permeability. Here we describe the preparation of water-dispersible colloidosomes based on silica nanoparticles and delineated by a continuous semipermeable inorganic membrane capable of self-activated, electrostatically gated permeability. We use crosslinking and covalent grafting of a pH-responsive copolymer to generate an ultrathin elastic membrane that exhibits selective release and uptake of small molecules. This behaviour, which depends on the charge of the copolymer coronal layer, serves to trigger enzymatic dephosphorylation reactions specifically within the protocell aqueous interior. This system represents a step towards the design and construction of alternative types of artificial chemical cells and protocell models based on spontaneous processes of inorganic self-organization
The relationship between anti-mullerian hormone in women receiving fertility assessments and age at menopause in subfertile women: evidence from large population studies
<p>Context: Anti-MĂŒllerian hormone (AMH) concentration reflects ovarian aging and is argued to be a useful predictor of age at menopause (AMP). It is hypothesized that AMH falling below a critical threshold corresponds to follicle depletion, which results in menopause. With this threshold, theoretical predictions of AMP can be made. Comparisons of such predictions with observed AMP from population studies support the role for AMH as a forecaster of menopause.</p>
<p>Objective: The objective of the study was to investigate whether previous relationships between AMH and AMP are valid using a much larger data set.</p>
<p>Setting: AMH was measured in 27 563 women attending fertility clinics.</p>
<p>Study Design: From these data a model of age-related AMH change was constructed using a robust regression analysis. Data on AMP from subfertile women were obtained from the population-based Prospect-European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (Prospect-EPIC) cohort (n = 2249). By constructing a probability distribution of age at which AMH falls below a critical threshold and fitting this to Prospect-EPIC menopausal age data using maximum likelihood, such a threshold was estimated.</p>
<p>Main Outcome: The main outcome was conformity between observed and predicted AMP.</p>
<p>Results: To get a distribution of AMH-predicted AMP that fit the Prospect-EPIC data, we found the critical AMH threshold should vary among women in such a way that women with low age-specific AMH would have lower thresholds, whereas women with high age-specific AMH would have higher thresholds (mean 0.075 ng/mL; interquartile range 0.038â0.15 ng/mL). Such a varying AMH threshold for menopause is a novel and biologically plausible finding. AMH became undetectable (<0.2 ng/mL) approximately 5 years before the occurrence of menopause, in line with a previous report.</p>
<p>Conclusions: The conformity of the observed and predicted distributions of AMP supports the hypothesis that declining population averages of AMH are associated with menopause, making AMH an excellent candidate biomarker for AMP prediction. Further research will help establish the accuracy of AMH levels to predict AMP within individuals.</p>
N-band Imaging of Seyfert Nuclei and the MIR-X-ray correlation
We present new mid-infrared (N-band) images of a sample of eight nearby
Seyfert galaxies. In all of our targets, we detect a central unresolved source,
which in some cases has been identified for the first time. In particular, we
have detected the mid-infrared emission from the active nucleus of NGC 4945,
which previously remained undetected at any wavelength but hard X-rays. We also
detect circumnuclear extended emission in the Circinus galaxy along its major
axis, and find marginal evidence for extended circumnuclear emission in NGC
3281.
The high spatial resolution (1.7") of our data allows us to separate the flux
of the nuclear point sources from the extended circumnuclear starburst (if
present). We complement our sample with literature data for a number of
non-active starburst galaxies, and relate the nuclear N-band flux to published
hard (2-10 kev) X-ray fluxes. We find tight and well-separated correlations
between nuclear N-band flux and X-ray flux for both Seyfert and starburst
nuclei which span over 3 orders of magnitude in luminosity. We demonstrate that
these correlations can be used as a powerful classification tool for galactic
nuclei.
For example, we find strong evidence against NGC 1808 currently harbouring an
active Seyfert nucleus based on its position in the mid-infrared-X-ray diagram.

Free radical scavenging and antioxidant activity of allopurinol and oxypurinol in experimental lens-induced uveitis
Purpose. In addition to the inhibition of xanthine oxidase, allopurinol is known to act, dependent on the dose, as a free radical scavenger, an antioxidant, and a "scavenger" of hypochlorous acid. This activity was investigated using a model of lens-induced uveitis. Methods. Lipid peroxides (LPO) were determined in aqueous humor and in retinal tissue. Reduced and oxidized glutathione (GSH and GSSG) of the aqueous humor and myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity in the iris-ciliary body complex were analyzed. Allopurinol and oxypurinol concentrations were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography in aqueous humor and retinal tissue of both control eyes and eyes with uveitis. These measurements were performed 6 hours after intravenous application of allopurinol. Results. In lens-induced uveitis, LPO are significantly elevated, GSH is reduced, and GSSG and MPO are increased. A xanthine oxidase inhibition dose (<10 mg/kg body weight) of allopurinol showed no effects on oxidative tissue damage in the model used in this study. Higher doses, however, were able to reduce the oxidative damage. Allopurinol (20 mg/kg body weight) had slight effects on GSH and GSSG. All parameters improved using a dose of 50 mg/kg body weight; a dose of 100 mg/kg body weight only showed additional improvement in GSH and GSSG. There was no further change in the other parameters. Allopurinol and oxypurinol concentrations in aqueous humor and retinal tissue showed a dose dependency reaching scavenger concentrations after application of 50 mg/kg body weight of allopurinol. Conclusions. These results suggest that the xanthine oxidase mechanism plays a minor role in the oxidative tissue damage due to lens-induced uveitis. Free radicals and oxidants are generated by activated leukocytes; therefore, the effect of higher doses of allopurinol is due to its free radical scavenging and antioxidative activity. The NICMOS Snapshot Survey of nearby Galaxies
We present ``snapshot'' observations with the NearInfrared Camera and
MultiObject Spectrometer (NICMOS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) of
94 nearby galaxies from the Revised Shapley Ames Catalog. Images with 0.2 as
resolution were obtained in two filters, a broad-band continuum filter (F160W,
roughly equivalent to the H-band) and a narrow band filter centered on the
Paschen alpha line (F187N or F190N, depending on the galaxy redshift) with the
51x51 as field of view of the NICMOS camera 3. A first-order continuum
subtraction is performed, and the resulting line maps and integrated Paschen
alpha line fluxes are presented. A statistical analysis indicates that the
average Paschen alpha surface brightness {\bf in the central regions} is
highest in early-type (Sa-Sb) spirals.Comment: Original contained error in flux calibration. Table 1 now has correct

GA-NIFS: JWST/NIRSpec IFU observations of HFLS3 reveal a dense galaxy group at z~6.3
Massive, starbursting galaxies in the early Universe represent some of the
most extreme objects in the study of galaxy evolution. One such source is HFLS3
(z~6.34), which was originally identified as an extreme starburst galaxy with
mild gravitational magnification. Here, we present new observations of HFLS3
with the JWST/NIRSpec IFU in both low (PRISM/CLEAR; R~100) and high spectral
resolution (G395H/290LP; R~2700), with high spatial resolution (~0.1") and
sensitivity. Thanks to the combination of the NIRSpec data and a new lensing
model with accurate spectroscopic redshifts, we find that the 3"x3" field is
crowded, with a lensed arc (C, z=6.3425+/-0.0002), two galaxies to the south
(S1 and S2, z=6.3592+/-0.0001), two galaxies to the west (W1,
z=6.3550+/-0.0001; W2, z=6.3628+/-0.0001), and two low-redshift interlopers
(G1, z=3.4806+/-0.0001; G2, z=2.00+/-0.01). We present spectral fits and
morpho-kinematic maps for each bright emission line (e.g., [OIII]5007, Halpha,
[NII]6584) from the R2700 data for all sources except G2. From a line ratio
analysis, the galaxies in C are likely powered by star formation, while we
cannot rule out or confirm the presence of AGN in the other high-redshift
sources. We perform gravitational lens modelling, finding evidence for a
two-source composition of the lensed central object and a comparable
magnification factor (mu=2.1-2.4) to previous work. The projected distances and
velocity offsets of each galaxy suggest that they will merge within the next
~1Gyr. Finally, we examine the dust extinction-corrected SFR of each z>6
source, finding that the total star formation (460+/-90 Msol/yr,
magnification-corrected) is distributed across the six z~6.34-6.36 objects over
a region of diameter ~11kpc. Altogether, this suggests that HFLS3 is not a
single starburst galaxy, but instead is a merging system of star-forming
galaxies in the Epoch of Reionization.Comment: 23 pages, 14 figures, submitted to A&
