    KIC 10449976: discovery of an extreme-helium subdwarf in the Kepler field

    Optical spectroscopy of the blue star KIC 10449976 shows that it is an extremely helium-rich subdwarf with effective temperature T=40000+/-300 K and surface gravity log g=5.3+/-0.1. Radial-velocity measurements over a five-day timescale show an upper variability limit of ~50+/-20 km/s. Kepler photometry of KIC 10449976 in both long and short cadence modes shows evidence for a periodic modulation on a timescale of ~3.9 days. We have examined the possibility that this modulation is not astrophysical but conclude it is most likely real. We discuss whether the modulation could be caused by a low-mass companion, by stellar pulsations, or by spots. The identification of any one of these as cause has important consequences for understanding the origin of helium-rich subdwarfs.Comment: Accepted by MNRA

    Insulin autoantibodies as determined by competitive radiobinding assay are positively correlated with impaired beta-cell function — The Ulm-Frankfurt population study

    Out of a random population of 4208 non-diabetic pupils without a family history of Type I diabetes 44 (1.05%) individuals had islet cell antibody (ICA) levels greater or equal to 5 Juvenile Diabetes Foundation (JDF) units. 39 of these ICA-positives could be repeatedly tested for circulating insulin autoantibodies (CIAA) using a competitive radiobinding assay. The results were compared with the insulin responses in the intravenous glucose tolerance tests (IVGTT) and with HLA types. Six pupils were positive for CIAA. All of them had complement-fixing ICA, and 5 of them were HLA-DR4 positive. Three of the 6 showed a first-phase insulin response below the first percentile of normal controls. Our data indicate that in population-based studies CIAA can be considered as a high risk marker for impaired beta-cell function in non-diabetic ICA-positive individuals

    A prospective study of a normal childhood population identified 44 islet cell antibody positive individuals. These subjects were typed for HLA DR and DQ alleles and investigated for the presence of antibodies to the Mr 64,000 (64K) islet cell antigen, complement-fixing islet cell antibodies and radiobinding insulin autoantibodies to determine their potency in detecting subjects with impaired Beta-cell function. At initial testing 64K antibodies were found in six of 44 islet cell antibody positive subjects (13.6%). The same sera were also positive for complement-fixing islet cell antibodies and five of them had insulin autoantibodies. During the follow-up at 18 months, islet cell antibodies remained detectable in 50% of the subjects studied. In all six cases who were originally positive, 64K antibodies were persistently detectable, whereas complement-fixing islet cell antibodies became negative in two of six and insulin autoantibodies in one of five individuals. HLA DR4 (p < 0.005) and absence of asparic acid (Asp) at position 57 of the HLA DQ chain (p < 0.05) were significantly increased in subjects with 64K antibodies compared with control subjects. Of 40 individuals tested in the intravenous glucose tolerance test, three had a first phase insulin response below the first percentile of normal control subjects. Two children developed Type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus after 18 and 26 months, respectively. Each of these subjects was non-Asp homozygous and had persistent islet cell and 64K antibodies. We conclude that 64K antibodies, complement-fixing islet cell antibodies and insulin autoantibodies represent sensitive serological markers in assessing high risk for a progression to Type 1 diabetes in islet cell antibody positive non-diabetic individuals

    Forest inventory attribute estimation using airborne laser scanning, aerial stereoimagery, radargrammetry and interferometry - Finnish experiences of the 3D techniques

    Three-dimensional (3D) remote sensing has enabled detailed mapping of terrain and vegetation heights. Consequently, forest inventory attributes are estimated more and more using point clouds and normalized surface models. In practical applications, mainly airborne laser scanning (ALS) has been used in forest resource mapping. The current status is that ALS-based forest inventories are widespread, and the popularity of ALS has also raised interest toward alternative 3D techniques, including airborne and spaceborne techniques. Point clouds can be generated using photogrammetry, radargrammetry and interferometry. Airborne stereo imagery can be used in deriving photogrammetric point clouds, as very-high-resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data are used in radargrammetry and interferometry. ALS is capable of mapping both the terrain and tree heights in mixed forest conditions, which is an advantage over aerial images or SAR data. However, in many jurisdictions, a detailed ALS-based digital terrain model is already available, and that enables linking photogrammetric or SAR-derived heights to heights above the ground. In other words, in forest conditions, the height of single trees, height of the canopy and/or density of the canopy can be measured and used in estimation of forest inventory attributes. In this paper, first we review experiences of the use of digital stereo imagery and spaceborne SAR in estimation of forest inventory attributes in Finland, and we compare techniques to ALS.     Gravity-mode period spacings as seismic diagnostic for a sample of gamma Doradus stars from Kepler space photometry and high-resolution ground-based spectroscopy

    Gamma Doradus stars (hereafter gamma Dor stars) are gravity-mode pulsators of spectral type A or F. Such modes probe the deep stellar interior, offering a detailed fingerprint of their structure. Four-year high-precision space-based Kepler photometry of gamma Dor stars has become available, allowing us to study these stars with unprecedented detail. We selected, analysed, and characterized a sample of 67 gamma Dor stars for which we have Kepler observations available. For all the targets in the sample we assembled high-resolution spectroscopy to confirm their F-type nature. We found fourteen binaries, among which four single-lined binaries, five double-lined binaries, two triple systems and three binaries with no detected radial velocity variations. We estimated the orbital parameters whenever possible. For the single stars and the single-lined binaries, fundamental parameter values were determined from spectroscopy. We searched for period spacing patterns in the photometric data and identified this diagnostic for 50 of the stars in the sample, 46 of which are single stars or single-lined binaries. We found a strong correlation between the spectroscopic vsini and the period spacing values, confirming the influence of rotation on gamma Dor-type pulsations as predicted by theory. We also found relations between the dominant g-mode frequency, the longest pulsation period detected in series of prograde modes, vsini, and log Teff.Comment: 61 pages, 61 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

    Nuorten aikuisten orientoituminen virtuaaliympäristöön

    Tiivistelmä. Tämän pro gradu -tutkielman tarkoituksena oli selvittää nuorten aikuisten orientoitumista virtuaaliympäristöön. Tutkimme toiston, ympäristön ja kontekstin merkitystä esineen löytämiseen virtuaaliympäristössä. Tämä tutkielma on osa laajempaa tutkimusprojektia, jonka tavoitteena on kartoittaa virtuaalilasien käyttömahdollisuuksia puheterapia-kuntoutuksessa. Tutkimus toteutettiin yhteistyössä Peili Vision Oy:n kanssa. Tutkimukseen osallistui 60 nuorta aikuista, jotka olivat Oulun yliopiston opiskelijoita, henkilökuntaa ja vierailijoita. Tutkittavat olivat 18–32-vuotiaita perusterveitä miehiä ja naisia. Tutkittavien tehtävänä oli etsiä erilaisia esineitä virtuaaliympäristöstä. Tutkimuksessa käytettiin kahta virtuaaliympäristöä, kalustettua tilaa eli keittiötä ja tyhjää huonetta. Jokainen koehenkilö kävi tehtävälistan läpi viisi kertaa kummassakin ympäristössä. Etsittävistä esineistä puolet olivat keittiökontekstiin sopivia ja puolet olivat esineitä, jotka eivät tyypillisesti kuulu keittiöön. Koetilanteessa mitattiin esineiden löytämisaika siitä, kun sana ilmestyy näkökenttään ja sitä vastaava esine on löydetty. Tutkimus osoitti, että toistolla on merkitystä esineen hakunopeuteen kummassakin ympäristössä. Molemmissa ympäristöissä koehenkilöiltä kesti keskimäärin kolme tehtäväkertaa saavuttaa taso, jolloin hakunopeus ei enää kehittynyt tilastollisesti merkitsevästi. Keittiön ja tyhjän huoneen välillä havaittiin tilastollisesti merkitsevä ero esineiden hakunopeudessa. Keittiössä esineet löydettiin joka tehtäväkerralla nopeammin kuin tyhjässä huoneessa, jossa varsinaista kontekstia ei ole. Esinekohtaisella kontekstilla oli merkitystä hakunopeuteen ensimmäisten tehtäväkertojen aikana. Kontekstiin sopivat esineet löydettiin nopeammin kuin kontekstiin sopimattomat. Tutkimuksen perusteella voidaan päätellä, että toistolla, ympäristöllä sekä kontekstilla on kaikilla merkitystä siihen, kuinka orientoidumme ympäristöömme. Tämä tutkimus tarjoaa tietoa siitä, kuinka nopeasti terve nuori aikuinen orientoituu virtuaaliympäristöön. Virtuaalitodellisuus tarjoaa tulevaisuudessa lähes rajattomat mahdollisuudet erilaisten ympäristöjen ja sovellusten hyödyntämiseen myös puheterapiakuntoutuksessa

    Alternative splicing discriminates molecular subtypes and has prognostic impact in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma

    Effect of alternative splicing (AS) on diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) pathogenesis and survival has not been systematically addressed. Here, we compared differentially expressed genes and exons in association with survival after chemoimmunotherapy, and between germinal center B-cell like (GCB) and activated B-cell like (ABC) DLBCLs. Genome-wide exon array-based screen was performed from samples of 38 clinically high-risk patients who were treated in a Nordic phase II study with dose-dense chemoimmunotherapy and central nervous system prophylaxis. The exon expression profile separated the patients according to molecular subgroups and survival better than the gene expression profile. Pathway analyses revealed enrichment of AS genes in inflammation and adhesion-related processes, and in signal transduction, such as phosphatidylinositol signaling system and adenosine triphosphate binding cassette transporters. Altogether, 49% of AS-related exons were protein coding, and domain prediction showed 28% of such exons to include a functional domain, such as transmembrane helix domain or phosphorylation sites. Validation in an independent cohort of 92 DLBCL samples subjected to RNA-sequencing confirmed differential exon usage of selected genes and association of AS with molecular subtypes and survival. The results indicate that AS events are able to discriminate GCB and ABC DLBCLs and have prognostic impact in DLBCL.Peer reviewe
