Experimental constraints on the γ\gamma-ray strength function in 90^{90}Zr using partial cross sections of the 89^{89}Y(p,γ\gamma)90^{90}Zr reaction

Partial cross sections of the 89^{89}Y(p,γ\gamma)90^{90}Zr reaction have been measured to investigate the γ\gamma-ray strength function in the neutron-magic nucleus 90^{90}Zr. For five proton energies between Ep=3.65E_p=3.65 MeV and Ep=4.70E_p=4.70 MeV, partial cross sections for the population of seven discrete states in 90^{90}Zr have been determined by means of in-beam γ\gamma-ray spectroscopy. Since these γ\gamma-ray transitions are dominantly of E1E1 character, the present measurement allows an access to the low-lying dipole strength in 90^{90}Zr. A γ\gamma-ray strength function based on the experimental data could be extracted, which is used to describe the total and partial cross sections of this reaction by Hauser-Feshbach calculations successfully. Significant differences with respect to previously measured strength functions from photoabsorption data point towards deviations from the Brink-Axel hypothesis relating the photo-excitation and de-excitation strength functions.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

Possible experimental signature of octupole correlations in the 02+^+_2 states of the actinides

JÏ€J^{\pi}= 0+^+ states have been investigated in the actinide nucleus 240{}^{240}Pu up to an excitation energy of 3 MeV with a high-resolution (p,t) experiment at EpE_{p}= 24 MeV. To test the recently proposed JÏ€J^{\pi}= 02+^+_2 double-octupole structure, the phenomenological approach of the spdf-interacting boson model has been chosen. In addition, the total 0+^+ strength distribution and the 0+0^+ strength fragmentation have been compared to the model predictions as well as to the previously studied (p,t) reactions in the actinides. The results suggest that the structure of the 02+^+_2 states in the actinides might be more complex than the usually discussed pairing isomers. Instead, the octupole degree of freedom might contribute significantly. The signature of two close-lying 0+^+ states below the 2-quasiparticle energy is presented as a possible manifestation of strong octupole correlations in the structure of the 02+^+_2 states in the actinides.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, published in Phys. Investigation of octupole collectivity near the A=72A =72 shape-transitional point

Enhanced octupole collectivity is expected in the neutron-deficient Ge, Se and Kr isotopes with neutron number N≈40N \approx 40 and has indeed been observed for 70,72^{70,72}Ge. Shape coexistence and configuration mixing are, however, a notorious challenge for theoretical models trying to reliably predict octupole collectivity in this mass region, which is known to feature rapid shape changes with changing nucleon number and spin of the system. To further investigate the microscopic configurations causing the prolate-oblate-triaxial shape transition at A≈72A \approx 72 and their influence on octupole collectivity, the rare isotopes 72^{72}Se and 74,76^{74,76}Kr were studied via inelastic proton scattering in inverse kinematics. While significantly enhanced octupole strength of ∼32\sim 32 Weisskopf units (W.u.) was observed for 72^{72}Se, only strengths of ∼15\sim 15 W.u. were observed for 74,76^{74,76}Kr. In combination with existing data, the new data clearly question a simple origin of enhanced octupole strengths around N=40N = 40. The present work establishes two regions of distinct octupole strengths with a sudden strength increase around the A=72A=72 shape transitional point

We present the activities of the 'New Physics' working group for the 'Physics at TeV Colliders' workshop (Les Houches, France, 1-19 June, 2015). Our report includes new physics studies connected with the Higgs boson and its properties, direct search strategies, reinterpretation of the LHC results in the building of viable models and new computational tool developments. Important signatures for searches for natural new physics at the LHC and new assessments of the interplay between direct dark matter searches and the LHC are also considered.Comment: Proceedings of the New Physics Working Group of the 2015 Les Houches Workshop, Physics at TeV Colliders, Les Houches 1-19 June 2015. 197 page

Are autistic traits in the general population stable across development?

    Get PDF
There is accumulating evidence that autistic traits (AT) are on a continuum in the general population, with clinical autism representing the extreme end of a quantitative distribution. While the nature and severity of symptoms in clinical autism are known to persist over time, no study has examined the long-term stability of AT among typically developing toddlers. The current investigation measured AT in 360 males and 400 males from the general population close to two decades apart, using the Pervasive Developmental Disorder subscale of the Child Behavior Checklist in early childhood (M = 2.14 years; SD = 0.15), and the Autism-Spectrum Quotient in early adulthood (M = 19.50 years; SD = 0.70). Items from each scale were further divided into social (difficulties with social interaction and communication) and non-social (restricted and repetitive behaviours and interests) AT. The association between child and adult measurements of AT as well the influence of potentially confounding sociodemographic, antenatal and obstetric variables were assessed using Pearson's correlations and linear regression. For males, Total AT in early childhood were positively correlated with total AT (r = .16, p = .002) and social AT (r = .16, p = .002) in adulthood. There was also a positive correlation for males between social AT measured in early childhood and Total (r = .17, p = .001) and social AT (r = .16, p = .002) measured in adulthood. Correlations for non-social AT did not achieve significance in males. Furthermore, there was no significant longitudinal association in AT observed for males or females. Despite the constraints of using different measures and different raters at the two ages, this study found modest developmental stability of social AT from early childhood to adulthood in boys

Determination of the scalar polarizabilities of the proton using beam asymmetry Σ3\Sigma_{3} in Compton scattering

    Get PDF
The scalar dipole polarizabilities, αE1\alpha_{E1} and βM1\beta_{M1}, are fundamental properties related to the internal dynamics of the nucleon. The currently accepted values of the proton polarizabilities were determined by fitting to unpolarized proton Compton scattering cross section data. The measurement of the beam asymmetry Σ3\Sigma_{3} in a certain kinematical range provides an alternative approach to the extraction of the scalar polarizabilities. At the Mainz Microtron (MAMI) the beam asymmetry was measured for Compton scattering below pion photoproduction threshold for the first time. The results are compared with model calculations and the influence of the experimental data on the extraction of the scalar polarizabilities is determined.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure

Measurement of pi^0 photoproduction on the proton at MAMI C

    Get PDF
Differential cross sections for the gamma p -> pi^0 p reaction have been measured with the A2 tagged-photon facilities at the Mainz Microtron, MAMI C, up to the center-of-mass energy W=1.9 GeV. The new results, obtained with a fine energy and angular binning, increase the existing quantity of pi^0 photoproduction data by ~47%. Owing to the unprecedented statistical accuracy and the full angular coverage, the results are sensitive to high partial-wave amplitudes. This is demonstrated by the decomposition of the differential cross sections in terms of Legendre polynomials and by further comparison to model predictions. A new solution of the SAID partial-wave analysis obtained after adding the new data into the fit is presented.Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, 1 tabl
