    Dissociation constants and thermodynamic properties of amino acids used in CO2 absorption from (293 to 353) K

    The second dissociation constants of the amino acids βalanine, taurine, sarcosine, 6-aminohexanoic acid, DL-methionine, glycine, L-phenylalanine, and L-proline and the third dissociation constants of L-glutamic acid and L-aspartic acid have been determined from electromotive force measurements at temperatures from (293 to 353) K. Experimental results are reported and compared to literature values. Values of the standard state thermodynamic properties are derived from the experimental results and compared to the values of commercially available amines used as absorbents for CO 2 capture.

    The enthalpies of solution of cyclic ethers: 1,4- dioxane, 12-crown-4 and 18-crown-6 in the mixture of water and methanol have been measured within the whole mole fraction range at T = 298.15 K. Based on the obtained data, the effect of base–acid properties of water– methanol mixtures on the solution enthalpy of cyclic ethers in these mixtures has been analyzed. The solution enthalpy of cyclic ethers depends on acid properties of water– methanol mixtures in the range of high and medium water contents in the mixture.     Synergistic Antibacterial Effects of Metallic Nanoparticle Combinations

    © The Author(s) 2019.Metallic nanoparticles have unique antimicrobial properties that make them suitable for use within medical and pharmaceutical devices to prevent the spread of infection in healthcare. The use of nanoparticles in healthcare is on the increase with silver being used in many devices. However, not all metallic nanoparticles can target and kill all disease-causing bacteria. To overcome this, a combination of several different metallic nanoparticles were used in this study to compare effects of multiple metallic nanoparticles when in combination than when used singly, as single elemental nanoparticles (SENPs), against two common hospital acquired pathogens (Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas. aeruginosa). Flow cytometry LIVE/DEAD assay was used to determine rates of cell death within a bacterial population when exposed to the nanoparticles. Results were analysed using linear models to compare effectiveness of three different metallic nanoparticles, tungsten carbide (WC), silver (Ag) and copper (Cu), in combination and separately. Results show that when the nanoparticles are placed in combination (NPCs), antimicrobial effects significantly increase than when compared with SENPs (P < 0.01). This study demonstrates that certain metallic nanoparticles can be used in combination to improve the antimicrobial efficiency in destroying morphologically distinct pathogens within the healthcare and pharmaceutical industry.Peer reviewe

    Interaction of Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) with dibenzo-substituted macrocyclic ligands incorporating both symmetrically and unsymmetrically arranged N, O and S donors

    The synthesis and characterisation of four 17-membered, dibenzo-substituted macrocyclic ligands incorporating unsymmetrical arrangements of their N3S2, N3O2 and N3OS (two ligands) donor atoms are described; these rings complete the matrix of related macrocyclic systems incorporating both symmetric and unsymmetric donor sets reported previously. The X-ray structures of three of the new macrocycles are reported. In two of the Cu(II) structures only three of the possible five donor atoms present in the corresponding macrocyclic ligand bind to the Cu(II) site, whereas all five donors are coordinated in each of the remaining complexes. The interaction of Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) with the unsymmetric macrocycle series has been investigated by potentiometric (pH) titration in 95% methanol; X-ray structures of two nickel and three copper complexes of these ligands, each exhibiting 1 : 1 (M :L) ratios, have been obtained. The results are discussed in the context of previous results for these metals with the analogous 17-membered ring systems incorporating symmetrical arrangements of their donor atoms, with emphasis being given to both the influence of the donor atom set, as well as the donor atom sequence, on the nature of the resulting complexes

    Thermodynamic, Spectroscopic, and Structural Studies of Complexation of Phenol- and Pyridine-Armed Macrocyclic Ligands with Univalent Metal Ions

    Log K, ΔH, and ΔS values for interactions of a series of pyridinoazacrown ethers each bearing a phenol arm (2−6) and two macrocycles each bearing a pyridine arm (7, 8) with Na^+, K^+, Tl^+, and Ag^+ have been determined in absolute methanol at 25 °C by calorimetric titration. In each case, the complex stability has the sequence Na^+ < K^+ < Tl^+ ≪ Ag^+. The phenol-armed macrocycles exhibit selectivity of more than 4 orders of magnitude for Ag^+ over Na^+, K^+, and Tl^+. Attachment of a pendant phenol arm having various substituents to parent macrocycle 1 increases the binding abilities of the resulting ligands. Substituents on the para position of the phenol arm have an appreciable effect on cation-binding constants. Good Hammett correlations are found by plotting log K values vs σ_p for interactions of five phenol-armed macrocyclic ligands (2−6) with Na^+, K^+, and Tl^+. The complexation has been characterized by means of ^1H NMR and UV−visible spectroscopic, and X-ray crystallographic methods. The crystal data for Na^+−3:  formula, [Na(C_(23)H_(28.5)N_3O_5)](ClO_4)_(0.5); space group, P^1̄; a = 9.400(9) Å, b = 11.467(10) Å, c = 12.281(11) Å, α = 77.22(7)°, β = 87.73(7)°, γ = 86.39(7)°, V = 1288(2) Å^3, and Z = 2. The study indicates that the phenol OH group of 2−6 is capable of forming an intramolecular hydrogen bond with the macroring nitrogen atom and that the complexation in absolute methanol generally does not deprotonate these phenols. In the crystal structure of the Na^+−3 complex, the Na^+ is coordinated to all seven of the donor atoms of the ligand and two Na^+−3 complexes join together to form a dimer. The dimer contains an intermolecular hydrogen bond formed between the phenol hydrogen atom of one ligand and the phenolate group of a centrosymmetrically related ligand and two π−π stacking interactions between the electron-deficient pyridine ring of one molecule and the electron-rich phenol ring of the other

    It is paramount that any child or adolescent with a suspected disorder of sex development (DSD) is assessed by an experienced clinician with adequate knowledge about the range of conditions associated with DSD. If there is any doubt, the case should be discussed with the regional DSD team. In most cases, particularly in the case of the newborn, the paediatric endocrinologist within the regional team acts commonly as the first point of contact. This clinician should be part of a multidisciplinary team experienced in management of DSD and should ensure that the affected person and parents have access to specialist psychological support and that their information needs are comprehensively addressed. The underlying pathophysiology of DSD and the strengths and weaknesses of the tests that can be performed should be discussed with the parents and affected young person and tests undertaken in a timely fashion. Finally, in the field of rare conditions, it is imperative that the clinician shares the experience with others through national and international clinical and research collaboration

    We use a bag model to study flavoured mesonic (Qqqˉqˉ)(Qq\bar q\bar q) and baryonic (Qqqqq)({\overline Q}qqqq) states, where one heavy quark QQ is associated with light quarks or antiquarks, and search for possible stable multiquarks. No bound state is found. However some states lie not too high above their dissociation threshold, suggesting the possibility of resonances, or perhaps bound states in improved models.Comment: REVTEX, VERSION 3.

    Attitudes towards risk-reducing early salpingectomy with delayed oophorectomy for ovarian cancer prevention: a cohort study

    OBJECTIVE: To determine risk-reducing early salpingectomy and delayed oophorectomy (RRESDO) acceptability and effect of surgical prevention on menopausal sequelae/satisfaction/regret in women at increased ovarian cancer (OC) risk. DESIGN: Multicentre, cohort, questionnaire study (IRSCTN:12310993). SETTING: United Kingdom (UK). POPULATION: UK women without OC ≥18 years, at increased OC risk, with/without previous RRSO, ascertained through specialist familial cancer/genetic clinics and BRCA support groups. METHODS: Participants completed a 39-item questionnaire. Baseline characteristics were described using descriptive statistics. Logistic/linear regression models analysed the impact of variables on RRESDO acceptability and health outcomes. MAIN OUTCOMES: RRESDO acceptability, menopausal sequelae, satisfaction/regret. RESULTS: In all, 346 of 683 participants underwent risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy (RRSO). Of premenopausal women who had not undergone RRSO, 69.1% (181/262) found it acceptable to participate in a research study offering RRESDO. Premenopausal women concerned about sexual dysfunction were more likely to find RRESDO acceptable (odds ratio [OR] = 2.9, 95% CI 1.2-7.7, P = 0.025). Women experiencing sexual dysfunction after premenopausal RRSO were more likely to find RRESDO acceptable in retrospect (OR = 5.3, 95% CI 1.2-27.5, P < 0.031). In all, 88.8% (143/161) premenopausal and 95.2% (80/84) postmenopausal women who underwent RRSO, respectively, were satisfied with their decision, whereas 9.4% (15/160) premenopausal and 1.2% (1/81) postmenopausal women who underwent RRSO regretted their decision. HRT uptake in premenopausal individuals without breast cancer (BC) was 74.1% (80/108). HRT use did not significantly affect satisfaction/regret levels but did reduce symptoms of vaginal dryness (OR = 0.4, 95% CI 0.2-0.9, P = 0.025). CONCLUSION: Data show high RRESDO acceptability, particularly in women concerned about sexual dysfunction. Although RRSO satisfaction remains high, regret rates are much higher for premenopausal women than for postmenopausal women. HRT use following premenopausal RRSO does not increase satisfaction but does reduce vaginal dryness.
