    Research Notes: Vegetative Propagation of Soybeans

    During the course of genetic studies of possible linkage associations involving factors controlling nodulation response in soybeans, we found it desirable to increase the size of the F2 population produced in the greenhouse during the winter. We endeavored to do this by vegetatively propagating the F1 hybrid plants for use in seed production. We visualize that vegetative propagation would also be useful for other purposes: (1) maintaining aneuploids which segregate at meiosis, and (2) providing propagules which may be subjected to different photoperiod regimes, thus providing coincidence of flowering in crosses of uncertain maturity when little seed is available

    Using a narrative approach to understand place attachments and responses to power line proposals: the importance of life-place trajectories

    Research on people-place relations, incorporating place attachment and place identity, has often adopted a structural approach, overlooking the dynamic nature of these relations over time. More process-oriented research has tended to investigate the impacts of single moments or events, neglecting a broader focus upon people's life course. To address this gap, this study investigated patterns of residential place attachments ('life-place trajectories') and used these to better understand current place relations and responses to change, including disruption to pre-existing place bonds. Narrative interviews (n = 25) were conducted in 2013 with residents living in Nailsea, a UK town affected by proposals to construct a high voltage power line. Three notable findings emerged. First, the study indicated five novel lifeplace trajectories characterised by diverse configurations of residential mobility and continuity of settlement type. Second, the study extends our understanding of varieties of relationship with the current residence place, including identifying a novel variety of 'traditional-active attachment'. Third, the study indicates the relevance of the trajectories for understanding responses to place change proposals, including acceptance and opposition.     Understanding responses to a UK high-voltage powerline proposal: the role of place and project-based social representations

    In going beyond the NIMBY (Not In My Backyard) concept, Devine-Wright (2009) posited a place-based approach highlighting the role of social representations of place for understanding responses to energy infrastructure projects. Existing studies (Devine- Wright & Howes, 2010; Anderson, 2013) have investigated the ways in which representations of diverse forms of place change are anchored and objectified symbolically based on existing social representations of place. These studies have shown that the degree of fit between representations of place and proposed place change can be seen to inform community responses to different developments. There is however, a dearth of research investigating the symbolic fit of power line projects amongst existing representations of the English countryside, despite the fact that such projects are both highly controversial and key to ensuring delivery of low-carbon energy policy targets. This paper thus sought to explore social representations of a proposed power line development in Southwest England and their symbolic fit with representations of nearby countryside areas, given the increased deployment of lowcarbon energy infrastructure in this locale. Five focus groups were conducted with residents of a town in North Somerset, to highlight residents' co-constructed place and project-based social representations. Findings from thematic data analysis suggest that those representing the nearby countryside as replete with existing grid infrastructure objectified the power line proposal as an acceptable and 'familiar' form of place change. Conversely, those representing the countryside as 'natural' tended to objectify the proposal as industrialising this locale, objecting to it on this basis. This study reveals the utility of adopting Social Representations Theory to understand responses to proposed energy infrastructure developments given the UK low carbon transition, and suggests that grid companies could enhance acceptance by seeking to minimise the 'industrial' nature of such projects.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Instant Two-Body Equation in Breit Frame

    A quasipotential formalism for elastic scattering from relativistic bound states is based on applying an instant constraint to both initial and final states in the Breit frame. This formalism is advantageous for the analysis of electromagnetic interactions because current conservation and four momentum conservation are realized within a three-dimensional formalism. Wave functions are required in a frame where the total momentum is nonzero, which means that the usual partial wave analysis is inapplicable. In this work, the three-dimensional equation is solved numerically, taking into account the relevant symmetries. A dynamical boost of the interaction also is needed for the instant formalism, which in general requires that the boosted interaction be defined as the solution of a four-dimensional equation. For the case of a scalar separable interaction, this equation is solved and the Lorentz invariance of the three-dimensional formulation using the boosted interaction is verified.     Electromagnetic Scattering from Relativistic Bound States

    The quasipotential formalism for elastic scattering from relativistic bound states is formulated based on the instant constraint in the Breit frame. The quasipotential electromagnetic current is derived from Mandelstam's five-point kernel and obeys a two-body Ward identity. Breit-frame wave functions are obtained directly by solving integral equations with nonzero total three-momentum, thus accomplishing a dynamical boost.     Does tiny-scale atomic structure exist in the interstellar medium ?

    We report on preliminary results from the recent multi-epoch neutral hydrogen absorption measurements toward three pulsars, B0823+26, B1133+16 and B2016+28, using the Arecibo telescope. We do not find significant variations in optical depth profiles over periods of 0.3 and 9--10 yr, or on spatial scales of 10--20 and 70--85 AU. The large number of non detections of the tiny scale atomic structure suggests that the AU-sized structure is not ubiquitous in the interstellar medium and could be quite a rare phenomenon.Comment: Accepted by ApJ Letters, 5 pages, 2 figure

    Electron-deuteron scattering in a current-conserving description of relativistic bound states: formalism and impulse approximation calculations

    The electromagnetic interactions of a relativistic two-body bound state are formulated in three dimensions using an equal-time (ET) formalism. This involves a systematic reduction of four-dimensional dynamics to a three-dimensional form by integrating out the time components of relative momenta. A conserved electromagnetic current is developed for the ET formalism. It is shown that consistent truncations of the electromagnetic current and the NNNN interaction kernel may be made, order-by-order in the coupling constants, such that appropriate Ward-Takahashi identities are satisfied. A meson-exchange model of the NNNN interaction is used to calculate deuteron vertex functions. Calculations of electromagnetic form factors for elastic scattering of electrons by deuterium are performed using an impulse-approximation current. Negative-energy components of the deuteron's vertex function and retardation effects in the meson-exchange interaction are found to have only minor effects on the deuteron form factors.Comment: 42 pages, RevTe
