    The Mediational Role of Desire for Cultural Tightness on Concern With COVID-19 and Perceived Self-Control

    When ecological threats are more severe or prevalent, societies are more likely to tighten their social norms and punishments. Moreover, when people follow clear and tight rules, they are more prone to regulate their behavior (i.e., self-control) in order to avoid punishment. Therefore, we examined the mediating role of people’s endorsement of cultural tightness (i.e., support and desire) on the relationship between concern with COVID-19 threat and personal self-control. Our hypothesis was tested through a mediation model in two studies with a sample of (N=315, 77.1% females, Mage=23.71) university students (Study 1) and with a heterogeneous sample of (N=239, 65.7% females, Mage=36.55) participants (Study 2). Empirical support for the proposed model was found in both studies. Implications of this research will be discussed. The main implication is related to the possibility that people’s desire for strong norms to cope with the COVID-19 threat could promote greater self-regulated preventive behavior in order to protect their health

    Flame pyrolysis synthesis of mixed oxides for glycerol steam reforming

    Flame spray pyrolysis was used to produce nanosized Ni-based catalysts starting from different mixed oxides. LaNiO3 and CeNiO3 were used as base materials and the formulation was varied by mixing them or incorporating variable amounts of ZrO2 or SrO during the synthesis. The catalysts were tested for the steam reforming of glycerol. One of the key problems for this application is the resistance to deactivation by sintering and coking, which may be increased by (1) improving Ni dispersion through the production of a Ni-La or Ni-Ce mixed oxide precursor, and then reduced; (2) using an oxide as ZrO2, which established a strong interaction with Ni and possesses high thermal resistance; (3) decreasing the surface acidity of ZrO2 through a basic promoter/support, such as La2O3; and (4) adding a promoter/support with very high oxygen mobility such as CeO2. A further key feature is the use of a high temperature synthesis, such as flame spray pyrolysis, to improve the overall thermal resistance of the oxides. These strategies proved effective to obtain active and stable catalysts at least for 20 h on stream with very limited coke formation

    Flood susceptibility assessment in a highly urbanized alluvial fan: the case study of Sala Consilina (southern Italy)

    Abstract. This paper deals with the risk assessment to alluvial fan flooding at the piedmont zone of carbonate massifs of the southern Apennines chain (southern Italy). These areas are prime spots for urban development and are generally considered to be safer than the valley floors. As a result, villages and towns have been built on alluvial fans which, during intense storms, may be affected by flooding and/or debris flow processes. The study area is located at the foothills of the Maddalena mountains, an elongated NW-SE trending ridge which bounds to the east the wide intermontane basin of Vallo di Diano. The area comprises a wide detrital talus (bajada) made up by coalescent alluvial fans, ranging in age from the Middle Pleistocene to the Holocene. Historical analysis was carried out to ascertain the state of activity of the fans and to identify and map the zones most hit by past flooding. According to the information gathered, the Sala Consilina fans would appear prone to debris flows; in the past these processes have produced extensive damage and loss of life in the urban area. The watershed basins feeding the fans have very low response times and may produce debris flow events with high magnitudes. Taking into account the historical damage, the fan surface morphology, and the present urban development (street orientation and hydraulic network), the piedmont area was zoned and various susceptibility classes were detected. These results may represent a useful tool for studies aiming at territorial hazard mapping and civil protection interventions

    Carrageenan-induced acute inflammation in the mouse air pouch synovial model. Role of tumour necrosis factor

    We used the mouse air pouch model of inflammation to study the interaction between cytokines, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and cell migration during the various phases of acute local inflammation induced by carrageenan. In serum, the levels of interleukin 1 (IL-1), interleukin 6 (IL-6), tumour necrosis factor (TNF), serum amiloid-A (SAA) and Fe++ were never different from controls, indicating that no systemic inflammatory changes were induced. Locally the exudate volume and the number of leukocytes recruited into the pouch increased progressively until 7 days after carrageenan. The same was true for PGE2 production. We could not measure IL-1 but the production of IL-6 and TNF reached a maximum after 5-24 h then quickly decreased. Anti-TNF antibodies inhibited cell migration by 50% 24 h after treatment. Pretreatment with interleukin 10 (IL-10) inhibited TNF production almost completely and cell migration by 60%. Carrageenan-induced inflammation was modulated by anti-inflammatory drugs. Pretreatment with dexamethasone (DEX) or indomethacin (INDO) inhibited cell migration and reduced the concentration of TNF in the exudate. Production of PGE2 or vascular permeability did not correlate with the number of cells in the pouch. Local TNF seems to play an important role in this model, particularly for leukocyte migration in the first phase of the inflammatory process. In conclusion, the air pouch seems to be a good model for studying the regulation of the early events of local inflammation, particularly the role of cytokines and cell migration

    Observation of Dirac-like surface state bands on the top surface of BiSe

    Two quintuple layers of strong topological insulator Bi2Se3 are coupled by a Bi bilayer in BiSe crystal. We investigated its electronic structure using angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy to study its topological nature. Dirac like linearly dispersive surface state bands are observed on the 001 surface of BiSe and Sb doped BiSe, similar to Bi2Se3. Moreover, the lower part of the SSBs buries deep in the bulk valence band. Overlap region between the SSBs and BVB is large in Sb doped system and the SSBs deviate from the Dirac like linear dispersion in this region. These results highlight the role of interlayer coupling between the Bi bilayer and the Bi2Se3 QLs. Furthermore, we observed a large intensity imbalance in the SSBs located at the positive and negative k parallel directions. This asymmetry pattern gradually reverses as the excitation energy scans from low 14eV to high 34eV value. However, we did not observe signal of surface magnetization resulting from the intensity imbalance in SSBs due to hole-generated uncompensated spin accumulation in the photoexcitation process. The main reason for this could be the faster relaxation process for photo hole due to the presence of the Bi bilayer between the adjacent Bi2Se3 QLs. The observed photon energy dependent intensity variation could be a signature of the mixing between the spin and the orbit texture of the SSBs

    A multidisciplinary study on the spatial variability of the local stratigraphic conditions in partially saturated slopes for flow-like landslide prediction

    Flow-like landslides, which occur mainly in shallow granular deposits resting on steep bedrock, represent a major natural hazard worldwide. The pore water pressure distribution and the soil water content directly affect the soil shear strength, thus controlling the triggering of these landslides. Criticalgeomorphological and topographical settings, together with peculiar stratigraphic and hydrogeological features, are commonly recognized as predisposing factors for flow-like landslides occurrence. Hence, investigating the spatial and temporal variability of hydraulic slope conditions is a fundamental activity that consists of identifying local geological factors and seasonal monitoring of the subsurface water regime. The present work proposes an integrated geological, geophysical and geotechnical approach to identify the spatial variability of the local stratigraphic setting and hydrogeological conditions in a partially saturated slope, in order to set up a procedure able to provide a prediction of the flow-like landslides occurrence atslope scale. The multidisciplinary study has been applied to a test site on Mt. Faito, in the Lattari Mts. (Southern Italy), where extensive geophysical, geological and geotechnical soil characterization and in situmonitoring data collected over two years are available

    INTEGRAL high energy monitoring of the X-ray burster KS 1741-293

    KS 1741-293, discovered in 1989 by the X-ray camera TTM in the Kvant module of the Mir space station and identified as an X-ray burster, has not been detected in the hard X band until the advent of the INTEGRAL observatory. Moreover this source has been recently object of scientific discussion, being also associated to a nearby extended radio source that in principle could be the supernova remnant produced by the accretion induced collapse in the binary system. Our long term monitoring with INTEGRAL, covering the period from February 2003 to May 2005, confirms that KS 1741-293 is transient in soft and hard X band. When the source is active, from a simultaneous JEM-X and IBIS data analysis, we provide a wide band spectrum from 5 to 100 keV, that can be fit by a two component model, a multiple blackbody for the soft emission and a Comptonized or a cut-off power law model for the hard component. Finally, by the detection of two X-ray bursters with JEM-X, we confirm the bursting nature of KS 1741-293, including this source in the class of the hard tailed X-ray bursters.Comment: 7 pages, accepted for publication on MNRA

    Cardiac surgery practice during the COVID-19 outbreak: A regionwide survey

    Background: Health systems worldwide have been overburdened by the "COVID-19 surge". Consequently, strategies to remodulate non-COVID medical and surgical care had to be developed. Knowledge of the impact of COVID surge on cardiac surgery practice is mainstem. Present study aims to evaluate the regional practice pattern during lockdown in Campania. Methods: A multicenter regional observational 26-question survey was conducted, including all adult cardiac surgery units in Campania, Italy, to assess how surgical practice has changed during COVID-19 national lockdown. Results: All centers adopted specific protocols for screening patients and personnel. A significant reduction in the number of dedicated intensive care unit (ICU) beds (-30.0%±38.1%, range: 0-100%) and cardiac operating rooms (-22.2%±26.4%, range: 0-50%) along with personnel relocation to other departments was disclosed (anesthesiologists -5.8%±11.1%, range: 0-33.3%; perfusionists -5.6%±16.7%, range: 0-50%; nurses -4.8%±13.2%, range: 0-40%; cardiologists -3.2%±9.5%, range: 0-28.6%). Cardiac surgeons were never reallocated to other services. Globally, we witnessed dramatically lower adult cardiac surgery case volumes (335 vs. 667 procedures, P<0.001), as institutions and surgeons followed guidelines to curtail non-urgent operations. Conclusions: This regional survey demonstrates major changes in practice as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In this respect, this experience might lead to the development of permanent systems-based plans for future pandemic and may effectively help policy decision making when prioritizing healthcare resource reallocation during and after the pandemic
