Low frequency quasi-normal modes of AdS black holes
We calculate analytically low frequency quasi-normal modes of gravitational
perturbations of AdS Schwarzschild black holes in dimensions. We arrive at
analytic expressions which are in agreement with their counterparts from
linearized hydrodynamics in , in accordance with the
AdS/CFT correspondence. Our results are also in good agreement with results of
numerical calculations.Comment: 14 page
Heavy flavor diffusion in weakly coupled N=4 Super Yang-Mills theory
We use perturbation theory to compute the diffusion coefficient of a heavy
quark or scalar moving in N=4 SU(N_c) Super Yang-Mills plasma to leading order
in the coupling and the ratio T/M<<1. The result is compared both to recent
strong coupling calculations in the same theory and to the corresponding weak
coupling result in QCD. Finally, we present a compact and simple formulation of
the Lagrangian of our theory, N=4 SYM coupled to a massive fundamental N=2

Perturbations of anti-de Sitter black holes
I review perturbations of black holes in asymptotically anti-de Sitter space.
I show how the quasi-normal modes governing these perturbations can be
calculated analytically and discuss the implications on the hydrodynamics of
gauge theory fluids per the AdS/CFT correspondence. I also discuss phase
transitions of hairy black holes with hyperbolic horizons and the dual

Black Branes in a Box: Hydrodynamics, Stability, and Criticality
We study the effective hydrodynamics of neutral black branes enclosed in a
finite cylindrical cavity with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We focus on how
the Gregory-Laflamme instability changes as we vary the cavity radius R. Fixing
the metric at the cavity wall increases the rigidity of the black brane by
hindering gradients of the redshift on the wall. In the effective fluid, this
is reflected in the growth of the squared speed of sound. As a consequence,
when the cavity is smaller than a critical radius the black brane becomes
dynamically stable. The correlation with the change in thermodynamic stability
is transparent in our approach. We compute the bulk and shear viscosities of
the black brane and find that they do not run with R. We find mean-field theory

Chapter 3 Ecosystem Services and Disservices of Mangrove Forests and Salt Marshes
Coastal wetlands such as mangrove forests and saltmarshes provide a range of important benefits to people, broadly defined as ecosystem services. These include provisioning services such as fuelwood and food, regulating services such as carbon sequestration and wave attenuation, and various tangible and intangible cultural services. However, strong negative perceptions of coastal wetlands also exist, often driven by the perceived or actual ecosystem disservices that they also produce. These can include odour, a sense of danger, and their real or perceived role in vector and disease transmission (e.g., malaria). This review provides an introduction to the ecosystem services and disservices concepts, and highlights the broad range of services and disservices provided by mangrove forests and saltmarshes. Importantly, we discuss the key implications of ecosystem services and disservices for the management of these important coastal ecosystems. Ultimately, a clear binary does not exist between ecosystem services and disservices; an ecosystem service to one stakeholder can be viewed as a disservice to another, or a service can change seasonally into a disservice, and vice versa. It is not enough to only consider the beneficial ecosystem services that coastal wetlands provide: instead, we need to provide a balanced view of coastal wetlands that incorporates the complexities that exist in how humans relate to and interact with these important coastal ecosystems
Quark-Gluon Plasma - New Frontiers
As implied by organizers, this talk is not a conference summary but rather an
outline of progress/challenges/``frontiers'' of the theory. Some fundamental
questions addressed are:
Why is sQGP such a good liquid? Do we understand (de)confinement and what do
we know about ``magnetic'' objects creating it? Can we understand the AdS/CFT
predictions, from the gauge theory side? Can they be tested experimentally? Can
AdS/CFT duality help us understand rapid equilibration/entropy production? Can

D-Brane Propagation in Two-Dimensional Black Hole Geometries
We study propagation of D0-brane in two-dimensional Lorentzian black hole
backgrounds by the method of boundary conformal field theory of SL(2,R)/U(1)
supercoset at level k. Typically, such backgrounds arise as near-horizon
geometries of k coincident non-extremal NS5-branes, where 1/k measures
curvature of the backgrounds in string unit and hence size of string worldsheet
effects. At classical level, string worldsheet effects are suppressed and
D0-brane propagation in the Lorentzian black hole geometry is simply given by
the Wick rotation of D1-brane contour in the Euclidean black hole geometry.
Taking account of string worldsheet effects, boundary state of the Lorentzian
D0-brane is formally constructible via Wick rotation from that of the Euclidean
D1-brane. However, the construction is subject to ambiguities in boundary
conditions. We propose exact boundary states describing the D0-brane, and
clarify physical interpretations of various boundary states constructed from
different boundary conditions. As it falls into the black hole, the D0-brane
radiates off to the horizon and to the infinity. From the boundary states
constructed, we compute physical observables of such radiative process. We find
that part of the radiation to infinity is in effective thermal distribution at
the Hawking temperature. We also find that part of the radiation to horizon is
in the Hagedorn distribution, dominated by massive, highly non-relativistic
closed string states, much like the tachyon matter. Remarkably, such
distribution emerges only after string worldsheet effects are taken exactly
into account. From these results, we observe that nature of the radiation
distribution changes dramatically across the conifold geometry k=1 (k=3 for the

Shear Viscosity to Entropy Density Ratio in Six Derivative Gravity
We calculate shear viscosity to entropy density ratio in presence of four
derivative (with coefficient ) and six derivative (with coefficient
) terms in bulk action. In general, there can be three possible four
derivative terms and ten possible six derivative terms in the Lagrangian. Among
them two four derivative and eight six derivative terms are ambiguous, i.e.,
these terms can be removed from the action by suitable field redefinitions.
Rest are unambiguous. According to the AdS/CFT correspondence all the
unambiguous coefficients (coefficients of unambiguous terms) can be fixed in
terms of field theory parameters. Therefore, any measurable quantities of
boundary theory, for example shear viscosity to entropy density ratio, when
calculated holographically can be expressed in terms of unambiguous
coefficients in the bulk theory (or equivalently in terms of boundary
parameters). We calculate for generic six derivative gravity and find
that apparently it depends on few ambiguous coefficients at order .
We calculate six derivative corrections to central charges and and
express in terms of these central charges and unambiguous coefficients
