High-Mobility Few-Layer Graphene Field Effect Transistors Fabricated on Epitaxial Ferroelectric Gate Oxides
The carrier mobility \mu of few-layer graphene (FLG) field-effect transistors
increases ten-fold when the SiO_2 substrate is replaced by single-crystal
epitaxial Pb(Zr_0.2Ti_0.8)O_3 (PZT). In the electron-only regime of the FLG,
\mu reaches 7x10^4 cm^2/Vs at 300K for n = 2.4x10^12/cm^2, 70% of the intrinsic
limit set by longitudinal acoustic (LA) phonons; it increases to 1.4x10^5
cm^2/Vs at low temperature. The temperature-dependent resistivity \rho(T)
reveals a clear signature of LA phonon scattering, yielding a deformation
potential D = 7.8+/-0.5 eV.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Pairing in the quantum Hall system
We find an analogy between the single skyrmion state in the quantum Hall
system and the BCS superconducting state and address that the quantum
mechanical origin of the skyrmion is electronic pairing. The skyrmion phase is
found to be unstable for magnetic fields above the critical field at
temperature , which is well represented by the relation .Comment: revtex, two figures, to appear in Phys. Rev. B (Rapid Communications
Color Detection Using Chromophore-Nanotube Hybrid Devices
We present a nanoscale color detector based on a single-walled carbon
nanotube functionalized with azobenzene chromophores, where the chromophores
serve as photoabsorbers and the nanotube as the electronic read-out. By
synthesizing chromophores with specific absorption windows in the visible
spectrum and anchoring them to the nanotube surface, we demonstrate the
controlled detection of visible light of low intensity in narrow ranges of
wavelengths. Our measurements suggest that upon photoabsorption, the
chromophores isomerize from the ground state trans configuration to the excited
state cis configuration, accompanied by a large change in dipole moment,
changing the electrostatic environment of the nanotube. All-electron ab initio
calculations are used to study the chromophore-nanotube hybrids, and show that
the chromophores bind strongly to the nanotubes without disturbing the
electronic structure of either species. Calculated values of the dipole moments
support the notion of dipole changes as the optical detection mechanism.Comment: Accepted by Nano Letter
Symmetry-breaking skyrmion states in fractional quantum Hall systems
We calculate in an analyical fashion the energies and net spins of skyrmions
in fractional quantum Hall systems, based on the suggestion that skyrmion
states are spontaneously and symmetry-breaking states. The
quasihole-skyrmion state with a charge around = 1/3, where the
ground state is known as a spin-polarized ferromagnetic state, is found to
exist even in high magnetic fields up to about 7 T for GaAs samples.Comment: There is conceptual change. To appear in Phys. Rev.
The Revascularization Scales Dilemma: Is It Right to Apply the Treatment in Cerebral Ischemia Scale in Posterior Circulation Stroke?
ABSTRACT BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Although various revascularization scales are used in the angiographic evaluation of acute ischemic stroke, observer reliability tests of these scales have been rarely performed for posterior circulation stroke. We aimed to evaluate interand intraobserver variability of 2 scales, the modified Treatment in Cerebral Ischemia and the Arterial Occlusive Lesion, in posterior circulation stroke
Black holes in three dimensional higher spin gravity: A review
We review recent progress in the construction of black holes in three
dimensional higher spin gravity theories. Starting from spin-3 gravity and
working our way toward the theory of an infinite tower of higher spins coupled
to matter, we show how to harness higher spin gauge invariance to consistently
generalize familiar notions of black holes. We review the construction of black
holes with conserved higher spin charges and the computation of their partition
functions to leading asymptotic order. In view of the AdS/CFT correspondence as
applied to certain vector-like conformal field theories with extended conformal
symmetry, we successfully compare to CFT calculations in a generalized Cardy
regime. A brief recollection of pertinent aspects of ordinary gravity is also
given.Comment: 49 pages, harvmac, invited contribution to J. Phys. A special volume

Volatile Sulfur Compounds in Foods as a Result of Ionizing Radiation
Ionizing radiation improves food safety and extends shelf life by inactivating food-borne pathogens and spoilage microorganisms. However, irradiation may induce the development of an off-odor, particularly at high doses. The off-odor has been called “irradiation odor”. Substantial evidence suggests that volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) play an important role in the development of the off-odor. These compounds include hydrogen sulfide, methanethiol, methyl sulfide, dimethyl disulfide and dimethyl trisulfide among others. The formation of off-odor and VSCs due to irradiation in meat, and fruit juices is presented. It is known that irradiation exerts its effect through radiolysis of water in foods where water is a dominant component. Irradiation of water produces three primary free radicals: hydroxyl, hydrogen atoms, and hydrated electrons. Use of specific scavengers in a model system revealed that hydroxyl radicals are involved in the formation of VSCs. Possible mechanisms for formation of VSC are also discussed. Also discussed are possible remedies for formation of VSCs and off-odor, such as use of antioxidants and double packaging
More three-point correlators of giant magnons with finite size
In the framework of the semiclassical approach, we compute the normalized
structure constants in three-point correlation functions, when two of the
vertex operators correspond to heavy string states, while the third vertex
corresponds to a light state. This is done for the case when the heavy string
states are finite-size giant magnons with one or two angular momenta, and for
two different choices of the light state, corresponding to dilaton operator and
primary scalar operator. The relevant operators in the dual gauge theory are
Tr(F_{\mu\nu}^2 Z^j+...) and Tr(Z^j). We first consider the case of AdS_5 x S^5
and N = 4 super Yang-Mills. Then we extend the obtained results to the
gamma-deformed AdS_5 x S^5_\gamma, dual to N = 1 super Yang-Mills theory,
arising as an exactly marginal deformation of N = 4 super Yang-Mills.Comment: 14 pages, no figure
Strong polarization-induced reduction of addition energies in single-molecule nanojunctions
We address polarization-induced renormalization of molecular levels in
solid-state based single-molecule transistors and focus on an organic conjugate
molecule where a surprisingly large reduction of the addition energy has been
observed. We have developed a scheme that combines a self-consistent solution
of a quantum chemical calculation with a realistic description of the screening
environment. Our results indeed show a large reduction, and we explain this to
be a consequence of both (a) a reduction of the electrostatic molecular
charging energy and (b) polarization induced level shifts of the HOMO and LUMO
levels. Finally, we calculate the charge stability diagram and explain at a
qualitative level general features observed experimentally.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure
Learning Enriched Features for Real Image Restoration and Enhancement
With the goal of recovering high-quality image content from its degraded
version, image restoration enjoys numerous applications, such as in
surveillance, computational photography, medical imaging, and remote sensing.
Recently, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have achieved dramatic
improvements over conventional approaches for image restoration task. Existing
CNN-based methods typically operate either on full-resolution or on
progressively low-resolution representations. In the former case, spatially
precise but contextually less robust results are achieved, while in the latter
case, semantically reliable but spatially less accurate outputs are generated.
In this paper, we present a novel architecture with the collective goals of
maintaining spatially-precise high-resolution representations through the
entire network and receiving strong contextual information from the
low-resolution representations. The core of our approach is a multi-scale
residual block containing several key elements: (a) parallel multi-resolution
convolution streams for extracting multi-scale features, (b) information
exchange across the multi-resolution streams, (c) spatial and channel attention
mechanisms for capturing contextual information, and (d) attention based
multi-scale feature aggregation. In a nutshell, our approach learns an enriched
set of features that combines contextual information from multiple scales,
while simultaneously preserving the high-resolution spatial details. Extensive
experiments on five real image benchmark datasets demonstrate that our method,
named as MIRNet, achieves state-of-the-art results for a variety of image
processing tasks, including image denoising, super-resolution, and image
enhancement. The source code and pre-trained models are available at
