    On arithmetic and asymptotic properties of up-down numbers

    Let σ=(σ1,...,σN)\sigma=(\sigma_1,..., \sigma_N), where σi=±1\sigma_i =\pm 1, and let C(σ)C(\sigma) denote the number of permutations π\pi of 1,2,...,N+1,1,2,..., N+1, whose up-down signature sign(π(i+1)−π(i))=σi\mathrm{sign}(\pi(i+1)-\pi(i))=\sigma_i, for i=1,...,Ni=1,...,N. We prove that the set of all up-down numbers C(σ)C(\sigma) can be expressed by a single universal polynomial Φ\Phi, whose coefficients are products of numbers from the Taylor series of the hyperbolic tangent function. We prove that Φ\Phi is a modified exponential, and deduce some remarkable congruence properties for the set of all numbers C(σ)C(\sigma), for fixed NN. We prove a concise upper-bound for C(σ)C(\sigma), which describes the asymptotic behaviour of the up-down function C(σ)C(\sigma) in the limit C(σ)≪(N+1)!C(\sigma) \ll (N+1)!.Comment: Recommended for publication in Discrete Mathematics subject to revision

    Observation of Entanglement Between Itinerant Microwave Photons and a Superconducting Qubit

    A localized qubit entangled with a propagating quantum field is well suited to study non-local aspects of quantum mechanics and may also provide a channel to communicate between spatially separated nodes in a quantum network. Here, we report the on demand generation and characterization of Bell-type entangled states between a superconducting qubit and propagating microwave fields composed of zero, one and two-photon Fock states. Using low noise linear amplification and efficient data acquisition we extract all relevant correlations between the qubit and the photon states and demonstrate entanglement with high fidelity.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Photon State Tomography for Two-Mode Correlated Itinerant Microwave Fields

    Continuous variable entanglement between two modes of a radiation field is usually studied at optical frequencies. As an important step towards the observation of entanglement between propagating microwave photons we demonstrate the experimental state reconstruction of two field modes in the microwave domain. In particular, we generate two-mode correlated states with a Josephson parametric amplifier and detect all four quadrature components simultaneously in a two-channel heterodyne setup using amplitude detectors. Analyzing two-dimensional phase space histograms for all possible pairs of quadratures allows us to determine the full covariance matrix and reconstruct the four-dimensional Wigner function. We demonstrate strong correlations between the quadrature amplitude noise in the two modes. Under ideal conditions two-mode squeezing below the standard quantum limit should be observable in future experiments.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Childhood adversity and educational attainment: evidence from Zambia on the role of personality

    INTRODUCTION: We examine whether personality traits mediate the association between childhood adversity and educational attainment using longitudinal data from a cohort in Zambia. METHODS: We fit a structural equation model using data on three forms of childhood adversity-household poverty, stunting as a measure of chronic malnutrition, and death of a parent-and data on the "Big Five" personality traits and educational attainment assessed at 15 years of age. RESULTS: We find that childhood poverty and death of a parent are associated with lower openness to experience. Furthermore, openness to experience mediates 93% of the negative association between death of a parent and school enrollment and 19% of the negative association between childhood poverty and enrollment. DISCUSSION: Our findings reinforce a diverse and growing body of evidence linking childhood adversity to educational attainment while also placing it in a new light. Future work should continue to examine the biological and psychosocial pathways that determine openness to experience and other personality traits, as well as their role in shaping important life outcomes

    Linear plasmon dispersion in single-wall carbon nanotubes and the collective excitation spectrum of graphene

    We have measured a strictly linear pi-plasmon dispersion along the axis of individualized single wall carbon nanotubes, which is completely different from plasmon dispersions of graphite or bundled single wall carbon nanotubes. Comparative ab initio studies on graphene based systems allow us to reproduce the different dispersions. This suggests that individualized nanotubes provide viable experimental access to collective electronic excitations of graphene, and it validates the use of graphene to understand electronic excitations of carbon nanotubes. In particular, the calculations reveal that local field effects (LFE) cause a mixing of electronic transitions, including the 'Dirac cone', resulting in the observed linear dispersion

    Multi-Modal Human-Machine Communication for Instructing Robot Grasping Tasks

    A major challenge for the realization of intelligent robots is to supply them with cognitive abilities in order to allow ordinary users to program them easily and intuitively. One way of such programming is teaching work tasks by interactive demonstration. To make this effective and convenient for the user, the machine must be capable to establish a common focus of attention and be able to use and integrate spoken instructions, visual perceptions, and non-verbal clues like gestural commands. We report progress in building a hybrid architecture that combines statistical methods, neural networks, and finite state machines into an integrated system for instructing grasping tasks by man-machine interaction. The system combines the GRAVIS-robot for visual attention and gestural instruction with an intelligent interface for speech recognition and linguistic interpretation, and an modality fusion module to allow multi-modal task-oriented man-machine communication with respect to dextrous robot manipulation of objects.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figure

    Circular dichroism and bilayer splitting in the normal state of underdoped (Pb,Bi)2_2Sr2_2(Cax_xY1−x_{1-x})Cu2_2O8+δ_{8+\delta} and overdoped (Pb,Bi)2_2Sr2_2CaCu2_2O8+δ_{8+\delta}

    We report an ARPES investigation of the circular dichroism in the first Brillouin zone (BZ) of under- and overdoped Pb-Bi2212 samples. We show that the dichroism has opposite signs for bonding and antibonding components of the bilayer-split CuO-band and is antisymmetric with respect to reflections in both mirror planes parallel to the c-axis. Using this property of the energy and momentum intensity distributions we prove the existence of the bilayer splitting in the normal state of the underdoped compound and compare its value with the splitting in overdoped sample. In agreement with previous studies the magnitude of the interlayer coupling does not depend significantly on doping.     Competent and deficient provision of childbirth services: a descriptive observational study assessing the quality of intrapartum care in two provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo

    BACKGROUND: A majority of women in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) give birth in a health facility, but maternal and newborn mortality remains high. In rural areas, the quality of facility-based delivery care is often low. This study examines clinical quality of intrapartum care in two provinces of the DRC. METHODS: We observed process and input elements of delivery care provision at 29 facilities in Kwilu and Kwango provinces. Distinguishing non-performance attributable to provider behavior vs. input constraints, we compared both providers' adherence to clinical standards ("competent care") and non-adherence to processes for which required inputs were available ("deficient care"). RESULTS: Observing a total of 69 deliveries, care was most competent for partograph use (75% cases) and hemorrhage prevention (73%), but least for postpartum monitoring (4%). Competent care was significantly associated with higher case volumes (p = .03), skilled birth attendance (p = .05), and nulliparous women (p = .02). Care was most deficient for infection prevention (62%) and timely care (49%) and associated with cases observed at hospitals and lower delivery volume. CONCLUSIONS: Low quality was commonly not a result of missing equipment or supplies but related to providers' non-adherence to standard protocols. Low case volumes and the absence of skilled attendants seemed to be main factors for sub-standard quality care. Birth assistance during labor stage 2 was the only intrapartum stage heavily affected by the unavailability of essential equipment. Future interventions should strengthen links between birth attendants' practice to clinical protocols
